As for me, I was caught right in the middle. For those who risk everything for love, this was merely the beginning. As usual, I was listening to my mother’s well-worn advice. My queen mother was badmouthing Naz again—who happened to be my only friend. — Nur, come on, sweetie, get up and make your bed already. — Alright, Mom. I told you yesterday, remember? I’m going to meet up with Naz. — When did you tell me? You know I don’t really like that girl, right? — Yes, Mom, but you know she’s my only friend. Ever since my father passed away, nobody has shown me any love. Even my own name has lost its meaning; everyone knows me as ‘the thief’s daughter’ instead of Nur. I don’t want to be left all alone, please understand me. — Fine, sweetheart, if you say so. But still, don’t trust her too much. Following those words, my mother sank into a deep silence. As her eyes drifted into the distance, I knew she was reopening those same old wounds in her mind. Because of that scoundrel of a father, we had moved through three different neighborhoods. For years, she had been a woman branded as a thief’s wife, and it was obvious she was still terrified of letting me suffer that exact same stigma. — Mom, my queen, you’re drifting away again! If you’re worrying about me, please don’t. Look, I’m happy now, and I even have a job. — A job? What kind of job, sweetie? It’s not something like waitressing, is it? You know I worry about you. — No, Mom, not at all. You are now looking at a journalist! I’m going to be a street reporter. — Honey, what on earth are you talking about? Are you going to hunt down killers like they do on TV? — Nah, Mom, I’m going to bring down the mafia! Just kidding... I’m just going to interview people on the street, it’s a perfectly normal job. Anyway, I’m off! Everything’s under control, so just relax. Kisses! — The fact that everything is under control is exactly why I’m terrified! If it were up to me, you would have finished university and become a professor by now. — Right, Mom, sure. Need anything before I go? I’m out! — See you later, you crazy girl. Stay safe. I quickly got ready and rushed out of the house. Half an hour later, I arrived at the café where I was supposed to meet Naz. She was already sitting at the table, waiting for me. She was definitely going to ask for a major favor; otherwise, there was no way on earth she would arrive this early. — Naaaz! Hey, how are you? You good? — I’m good, girl, how are you? — I’m doing great too. So, what’s up? What made you call me out here so early? — Bestie, honestly, you know I graduated from university this year... — Yeah, Child Development is finally over. Hello everyone! This is actually my very first book, which I wrote with great excitement two years ago. Looking back now, I do notice a few plot and logical errors within the story.
