Chapter 1
The sound of glass shattering startles Indigo out of her sleep. The angry sounds of her mother's new boyfriend makes her sink deeper into her nest of blankets. By now Indigo knows that her mother will never stop choosing abusive assholes. And She knows better than anyone not to mention anything.
Indigo watches as the gentle glow of the soft LED lights flicker softly, casting a warm, diffused illumination that subtly tranquilizes the usually tense atmosphere. Despite this, nothing can ever fully make her feel safe; the countless times she has heard unsettling noises and seen disturbing sights have left scars that prevent her from letting her guard down again.
Indigo hesitates briefly in her room, listening intently for any signs of ongoing conflict—whether raised voices, muffled screams, or the shattering of glass. After lingering in silence for a significant moment, she concludes that no immediate danger persists and opens the door to her bedroom.
As Indigo sees that her mother and the boyfriend are gone she lets out a breathe she hadn't realized she was holding in. Her body gravitating to the kitchen since there isn’t anyone there to stop or shame her.
I guess i can eat whaever i want today, sky. Indigo says to her pet cat that is rubbing against her legs before searching the cabinet’s for something that might actually be enough to sustain her for school. She settles on the pop tarts she finds hidden in the back of a cabinet. The cherry ones that have the pink icing and red sprinkles. The same kind that she has preferred since she was just a little girl.
Indigo finishes the pop tarts quickly before actually getting ready for school. Her stomach not exactly full but it's enough to keep her from crashing out in first period.
As Indigo heads to her bedroom she grabs the hoodie that was left by the door. She doesn't fully remember where it came from but she knows who’s scent it is. Her mom had a brief Bisexual moment in life and ended up hooking up with her best friend Raven. Indigo remember the woman being more on the masculine side. But Ever since the woman left indigo had taken the clothing that was left behind.
I wonder if Raven will talk to me. Indigo says to herself as she remembers how she would actually spend a lot of time gaming with Raven. Indigo had become like a bestie to her even though she wasn't in her life for very long.
Indigo quickly unlocks her phone and opens her chat with Raven. She still remember’s exactly where Raven works and lives but she knows she can't just show up out of the damn blue. Indigo stares at the keyboard for a moment to long as she debates on reaching out or not but Raven actually beats her to it.
You okay, princess?. The text pops up on Indigo’s screen making her realize that raven must have seen she was active. But the sight of the pet name surprises indigo making her actually blush for a moment.
Yeah, i’m just getting ready for school. I only have a few weeks until graduation. Indigo quickly replies with a smiley face emoji to show she is happy that she will soon be done with high school. But it's clear that Raven knows something is up.
Are you safe, princess? You can tell me if your not. That message flashes onto to screen making indigo hesitate. How the fuck does she know I'm not okay? Indigo thinks to herself before thinking of a response.
Can we talk later? I can stop by your place and we can get pizza or something. Indigo quickly texts to raven. She knows if she tries to lie raven will see right through it. I can come over after Theater practice. Indigo adds before raven can respond.
Indigo puts her phone onto silent as she gathers her bag and vape. She takes a few hits as she is walking to school not even noticing Raven’s patrol car until she hears the brief warning siren making her groan and stop in her tracks before turning around to face a not so pleased Raven.
Indigo, is that what i think it is? Raven asks indigo making the girl gulp nervously. how much trouble would i be in if it was? Indigo asks with a nervous laugh which makes Raven smirk a bit.
That depends on what is in your pocket, princess. Raven tells indigo as she crosses her arms. Oh, come on raven. It's just a vape indigo rolls her eyes clearly not seeing the issue.
And you're still under age, Indigo. Your lucky I'm not actually on duty yet. Raven tells indigo and the girl lets out a sigh of relief. Indigo was definitely assuming that her mom would be called.
So can i come over later or not? I ask and she smirks knowing i clearly just want to play video games and eat junk food.
Yes but only if you promise to actually tell me what has been happening at home. Your mom unfriended me after finding her new boy toy. Raven says to Indigo as she rolls her eyes.
Actually the guy is an asshole so you definitely wouldn't like him. They were fighting last night and again this morning. Indigo tells raven as she fidgets with the sleeves of the hoodie. Raven seems to immediately recognize the hoodie.
Okay first i need to know if your actually safe. And second is that my hoodie?. Raven asks indigo making the girl look away sheepishly. Indigo doesn't know if she should say how bad it has gotten at home or not but she oddly feels comfortable with raven.
Yeah i found the hoodie near the front door this morning. Indigo says as she continues to fidget and avoid the first question.
Are you safe, baby?. Raven asks indigo making the girl look away. Indigo doesn't know how to say she's not safe without raven reporting it or something.
If I'm not can i stay with you? Indigo asks Raven as she continues to fidget. I won't tell you if i can’t. Indigo says to raven as she leans against the patrol car and takes another hit of her vape. It's clear at this point that indigo doesn't care that she is underage and vaping in front of a cop.
raven gently pulls indigo close before answering. You are always welcome to stay with me. If your ever not safe i want you to go to my place immediately. Raven tells indigo as she rubs the girls arm soothingly.
Indigo processes raven’s words for a moment before nodding. good now let's get you to school before your late, princess. Raven says to indigo as she opens to car door for the girl to get in. Indigo immediately gets in and accepts the ride.
The drive is mostly quiet aside from the country music that raven has playing softly through the patrol car. The soft melodies making indigo relax a bit but she knows this calm feeling won't last long.
As indigo is dropped off she waves goodbye to raven before heading inside. Her mood bubbly and light as she heads to first period.
