Chapter 1 The Mysterious Night
The night stretched endlessly across the valley, wrapped in a heavy silence that felt entirely unnatural. High above, the moon hung low and luminous, casting a bleak silver pallor over the jagged landscape. Yet no light, however pure, could soften the oppressive darkness bleeding from the fortress of J.K. Bloodthorn.
It stood alone on the highest ridge—a monolithic monument of jagged black spires piercing the heavens like claws. Centuries had not worn the stone down; if anything, time had only sharpened its edges. Every wall carried the faint, rhythmic pulse of ancient secrets, and every shadowed corridor echoed with the quiet whispers of forgotten history.
No human dared cross the perimeter. Those who did vanished into the mist, never to return.
Inside the castle walls, the air grew thick with a freezing chill. Along the grand corridor, iron torches flickered weakly, their flames low and trembling as if fire itself feared the entity ruling this domain.
J.K. Bloodthorn stood motionless on the sweeping stone balcony, overlooking the sea of black pines below. His tall figure blended seamlessly into the night, the heavy wool of his dark coat draping perfectly over his broad, rigid shoulders. The mountain wind howled around him, yet he remained perfectly still—a chilling display of absolute, unyielding control.
Slowly, his eyes scanned the tree line. In the darkness, his amber irises caught the moonlight, glowing with a faint, lethal luminescence. They were calculating and razor-sharp—the eyes of an immortal king who had ruled through blood and iron for centuries, trusting no one.
.K. didn't believe in fate. He believed in dominance. Total, unquestionable control.
Yet tonight, a strange, persistent pull tugged at the edges of his consciousness. His gaze locked onto a specific coordinate within the dense forest below. He wasn't guarding his territory; he was waiting.
Far beneath the mountain, hidden under the canopy of towering trees, the forest breathed with a violent vitality. Leaves rustled in the cool breeze, and the sharp scent of damp earth and crushed wildflowers saturated the air. Moonlight slipped through the thick branches, painting fractured silver patterns across the forest floor.
And in the very heart of this ancient wilderness, a sound broke the stillness.
A laugh. Bright, carefree, and fiercely alive.
Rizwana pressed her palm against the rough bark of a massive oak, her green eyes wide with stubborn determination. Her thick, chestnut hair fell in loose waves over her shoulders, catching the pale light like strands of spun bronze. Unlike the suffocating darkness of the castle on the ridge, she radiated life.
“Alright… just a little higher,” she murmured to herself, digging the soles of her boots into the grooves of the trunk.
Without a shred of hesitation, she hauled herself upward. Her movements were fluid and quick, bordering on reckless. She didn’t stop to calculate the risk; fear was a shadow she acknowledged but refused to obey.
Branch by branch, she climbed until the wind brushed hard against her flushed cheeks. From her high vantage point, the forest looked like an endless, rolling ocean of black. Her heart hammered against her ribs—not from terror, but from the raw adrenaline of the climb.
I knew it,” she whispered, a triumphant grin breaking across her face. “Worth it.”
For a fleeting second, the world felt perfect. Too perfect.
Then, the air grew violently cold.
High above on the balcony, J.K.’s focus tightened. The exact moment her foot had stepped into the woods, his predatory instincts had flared.
A human. Fragile. Insignificant. A temporary blink in his eternal existence. They lived, they withered, and they meant absolutely nothing to the crown.
And yet, as he watched her scale the oak, laughing against the wind, something shifted beneath his ribs. His jaw tightened, amber eyes narrowing into slits. She was alive in a way that felt offensive to his cold, dead world. It disturbed him.
“You’ve been staring into the dark for quite some time, Your Grace.”
The smooth, casual voice broke the silence. Kim Xavier stepped into the dim light of the balcony, his relaxed posture a stark contrast to the king’s rigid stance. Leaning against a carved stone pillar with his arms crossed, a knowing smirk played on his lips. Kim was the only immortal who dared speak to J.K. without bowing his head in terror.
“Should I be concerned,” Kim continued, tilting his head, “or thoroughly impressed?”
J.K. didn't turn. His gaze remained anchored to the tiny, moving speck of warmth in the distance.
Kim followed his line of sight, his smirk faltering into amusement as he spotted her. “Oh. So that is the distraction.”
Silence was his only answer.
Kim chuckled quietly, stepping closer to the edge. “She’s bold. Climbing the King's woods after midnight? Either she possesses remarkable courage… or she has absolutely no idea what hunts beneath these trees.” He paused, his voice dropping an octave. “Or perhaps, she is simply a fool.”
J.K.’s fists clenched inside his pockets, his knuckles turning stark white. “Humans are careless creatures,” he said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated with dangerous authority.
Kim raised an eyebrow, his smirk returning. “Undoubtedly. But you are still watching.”
Down in the valley, Rizwana shifted her weight to descend, but her hand froze on the bark. The playful rustle of the leaves suddenly ceased. The air turned heavy, thick, and suffocating, pressing against her chest like a physical weight.
Her smile vanished.
“…Hello?” she called out, her voice swallowed by the sudden, unnatural silence.
No one answered. The forest was dead quiet. Rizwana’s fingers dug deeper into the rough wood as a cold sweat broke out across her neck. For the first time in her life, she felt the unmistakable, piercing sensation of being watched by something massive. Something ancient.
Miles away, hidden on an adjacent cliff overlooking the valley, another pair of eyes burned with venomous intensity.
Catherine Bloodrose stood flush against the shadows, her flawless, pale face illuminated by the moon. Her striking beauty was undeniable, but the cruel twist of her lips transformed it into a mask of pure malice. Her gaze wasn't fixed on the human girl—it was locked onto J.K.’s balcony, tracking the exact direction of the king's attention.
“Interesting,” Catherine whispered, her voice sharp as glass. No warmth escaped her, only a toxic cocktail of possession and rising rage.
Further down the ridgeline, shrouded in the heavy mist of the jagged cliffs, Lucian Ravenshadow watched the tapestry unfold. He didn't hide from the dark; he commanded it. Tall, imposing, and radiating a quiet, calculated menace, his presence felt like a storm waiting to shatter the valley.
His eyes glowed faintly as he looked from the castle, to the forest, and finally to the girl trapped in the middle. A slow, sinister smile spread across his face.“So it begins,” he murmured into the wind.Back at the tree, Rizwana shook her head fiercely, trying to break the invisible tension gripping her. “It’s just your imagination,” she muttered under her breath, forcing her voice to remain steady. “Don't ruin a good night.”Determined to escape the chilling pressure, she began her descent. She moved quickly, swinging from branch to branch until her boots finally struck the solid earth. The moment her feet touched the ground, a sharp, violent gust of wind whipped through the trees, throwing her hair across her face.
She froze.
The oppressive weight in the air doubled. Her heart skipped a beat, then began to hammer frantically against her ribs. “…Okay, that is definitely not normal.”
Slowly, she turned in a full circle, scanning the dense thicket of black trunks. There was nothing there. Yet every instinct screamed that she was standing in the jaws of a predator.
Up on the balcony, J.K.’s claws subtly elongated against the stone railing. A sudden, violent urge slammed into his chest—a command from his basic instincts to descend the mountain, to rip through the canopy, and to claim the source of that vibrant warmth for himself.
The sheer intensity of the impulse angered him. He didn't follow instincts; he mastered them. Always. But this raw, foreign hunger was slipping through his fingers, and he despised it.
Rizwana took a hesitant step backward, her eyes wide as she tried to quiet her breathing. “Just go home,” she whispered to herself, her voice trembling. “Just walk away.”
Before she could take another step, the loud, violent snap of a heavy branch echoed directly behind her.
She spun around instantly, her back hitting the trunk of the oak. “Who’s there?!” she demanded, her voice cracking under the weight of the dark.
Only the silence answered.
High above, J.K. Bloodthorn’s amber eyes flared into a brilliant, lethal gold. For the first time in three hundred years, the Vampire King felt something dangerously close to anticipation coil in his gut.
And far below, in the bleeding shadows of the forest, Rizwana took another slow, blind step into the dark—completely unaware that the night had already sealed her fate.
