Chapter One: Before Tomorrow
"Sometimes, the smallest promises leave the deepest scars."
The smell of fresh coffee drifted through the kitchen as the morning sun poured in through the windows.
Evelyn Carter stood by the stove, humming softly while flipping pancakes. It was a Saturday, and for the first time in weeks, the house felt peaceful.
"Lily!" she called with a smile. "Breakfast is getting cold."
"I'm coming!" a little voice answered from upstairs.
A few seconds later, eight-year-old Lily came running down the stairs with messy hair and sleepy eyes. She wrapped her tiny arms around her mother's waist before sitting at the table.
"I'm starving."
"I could tell," Evelyn laughed as she placed a plate in front of her.
Just then, the front door opened.
"I'm home," Daniel said, carrying a bag of groceries.
"You've been gone forever," Evelyn teased.
"I know. The supermarket was packed."
He leaned over and kissed her forehead before placing the groceries on the counter.
It wasn't a perfect family.
No family ever is.
But they loved each other, and most days, that was enough.
Breakfast was filled with laughter, spilled juice, and Daniel pretending not to notice when Lily secretly fed pieces of pancake to the family dog under the table.
Moments like these felt ordinary.
None of them knew they were about to become memories.
Later that afternoon, Evelyn stepped outside to water the flowers in the front yard.
Her phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
She stared at the screen for a moment before answering.
"Hello?"
The smile on her face disappeared.
She didn't speak.
She simply listened.
After a few seconds, she whispered,
"...How did you get this number?"
Silence.
Then the call ended.
Evelyn stood frozen.
When she finally looked up, her hands were trembling.
She slipped the phone into her pocket before anyone inside the house could notice.
That evening, dinner was quieter than usual.
Daniel noticed.
"You've barely touched your food."
"I'm just tired."
"You sure?"
She forced a smile.
"I'm fine."
But she wasn't.
After dinner, Lily climbed onto the couch and rested her head on Evelyn's lap.
"Mom?"
"Hmm?"
"When I grow up..."
"Yes?"
"I want to be just like you."
Evelyn smiled, but her eyes filled with tears.
She gently brushed Lily's hair away from her face.
"No, sweetheart."
"Why?"
"I want you to become someone even better."
That night, long after Daniel and Lily had gone to bed, Evelyn sat alone on the back porch.
The same unknown number called again.
This time...
She answered immediately.
"I told you never to call me again."
Her face turned pale as she listened.
"No..."
A long silence followed.
Then she whispered,
"I understand."
She ended the call.
For several minutes, she sat without moving.
Then she looked toward the house where her husband and daughter were sleeping peacefully.
A single tear rolled down her cheek.
Very quietly, she said,
"I'm so sorry."

ohhh She probably got twisted up with people she shouldn't have
a very compelling beginning. Of course we have to know who is on that phone. What is so tragic enough to force a mother to leave her family ....who would not turn the page. Excellent 'grabber'. introduction to a seemingly normal family. that gets turned upside down by one phone call.
