Chapter 1
Brenda's disbelief unfurled like a silent storm; her gaze locked on the glaring caller ID that dared to read "Chad Dickson." Her heart raced, a mixture of confusion and curiosity swirling within. Why, in the vast realm of possibilities, was he calling now? The echoes of her firm declaration that their paths would never again intertwine still resonated clearly in her memory.
Tick-tock went the seconds, each ring pulling her further into a web of contemplation. How long would she let the phone sing its jarring tune before he finally took the unspoken cue? She chuckled inwardly, marveling at the uncanny ability men possessed to be absent when wanted and unexpectedly present when least desired.
A sigh escaped her lips, carrying the weight of countless unspoken emotions. She wasn't about to surrender to the tides of nostalgia. Her journey had transformed her, molding her into an independent force of nature. Chad's sudden reappearance wouldn't deter her course. Regret may have found him, but her heart remained untouched.
With a definitive swipe, she silenced the intrusive ring. The phone lay still, a symbol of her defiance against the past.
She closed the front door with a solid thud, the lock clicking into place, and walked toward her red car parked in the driveway. Sliding into the driver's seat, she tossed her bag onto the passenger side and buckled her seatbelt. Tension hung in the air. It wasn't just about the relentless calls from Dickson. Her unease ran deeper, a complex frustration that surfaced whenever she paused long enough to acknowledge it.
With a deep breath, she started the engine, the rumble beneath her a reminder of the path she was taking. She was relinquishing control, allowing God to steer the course. Her phone chimed again— Dickson, predictably. Trusting in her faith, she held onto the belief that God had a purpose for her. The phone's persistent ringing ceased after the second attempt. With a determined nod, she shifted gears and zoomed off.
The entrance to the office exuded an air of neglect, as if it had yet to be graced by the cleaning crew's attention. Unaware of her unusually early arrival, Brenda proceeded straight toward her office, only to collide unexpectedly with a lanky newcomer. Impeccably dressed in corporate attire, he sported a warm, wide grin that instantly bridged the gap between strangers.
“Are you always this early?” He had a sweet smile, the kind capable of brightening anyone's mood. He waved a file playfully. “I wasn’t trying to spy on you, I just couldn’t help noticing. I am Jake, and I am new here.”
“Oh! You are Jake Maddison, the new Project Supervisor?”
“Guilty. You must be Brenda. I’ve heard good things about you. Glad to meet you.”
“How about the bad things? I’m sure you’ve heard those too,” she chuckled. He flashed an irresistible smile, and after a brief handshake, they went their separate ways.
Brenda let out a soft sigh. Her goal this morning was twofold: to clear the clutter in her mind, and to tackle the stacks of real estate contract files making a home on her desk. The bright promise of a Monday morning beckoned.
A pang of curiosity gripped her as she surveyed the real estate files. They didn't quite fit her specific responsibilities. Picking up the phone, she dialed the secretary's office to unravel the mystery.
“Jane, can you see me in my office, please?” She hung up almost immediately. Minutes later, a chubby, friendly-looking woman appeared.
“You sent for me, ma?”
“Why do I have the real estate files?”
“I am sure it was a mistake.” Jane took the folder as Brenda handed it over. “There will be a board meeting in ten minutes, ma.”
“All right, thank you.”
A few minutes shy of 10 AM, Brenda joined her colleagues streaming into the conference room. Glancing around, she noted unusually serious expressions etched on their faces—a stark contrast to the usual corporate camaraderie.
The entrance of Mr. Spencer amplified the tension. Silence settled as he cleared his throat to begin his announcement.
“Certain individuals within our organization have conspired to undermine and tarnish the reputation of this firm,” Mr. Spencer stated, his voice heavy. “We have gathered substantial evidence against them, including instances of fraudulent practices like manipulating financial data and illegally diverting funds into personal accounts. In light of these findings, the firm has acted decisively. We have terminated their employment and are handing them over to the appropriate legal authorities.”
He proceeded to read out the names of the five suspects. The room hung in a heavy silence. Left in the wake of his words, Brenda grappled with a mix of emotions. What could drive individuals to commit such acts? Pity tugged at her heart, yet accountability was necessary.
As the meeting dismissed, Jake walked toward her. “How come the company did not notice these crimes until now?”
“Well, I am sure the Finance Manager and Supervisor are in a better position to answer that,” Brenda replied quietly. She wasn’t in the right frame of mind for gossip.
“Fine. Is something wrong?” he asked.
“If you do not mind, I need to see the boss,” she said, exiting quickly. She breathed a quick prayer as she knocked on the executive door.
“Come in, Brenda. Take a seat,” Spencer said. “We’ve got a new staff member; I am sure you are aware. However, given the challenges the company just experienced, we need you to consult with the finance department and extract all the financial statistics from when the terminated staff were employed until now. Is it possible?”
“Yes, sir. I will commence immediately.”
“I don’t need to remind you how important this is.”
“I understand, sir.”
After leaving his office, Brenda walked Jake around the floor to introduce him to the remaining team. “Everyone, please, just a few minutes of your time,” she announced, drawing their eyes. “Meet Mr. Jake Maddison, our new Project Supervisor.”
Jake beamed widely. Guess he has been expecting this, she thought to herself.
“You are welcome, sir,” Mr. Davidson greeted.
“He deserves all your cooperation,” Brenda rounded off. “We are great people, and together we can achieve greater things.”
********************************
At 2 AM, financial statements lay spread across Brenda’s sofa and coffee table. Hours of comparing, contrasting, and cross-checking had finally yielded a completed report.
Struggling into her pajamas and crawling into bed, she reflected on the whirlwind day. Ignoring Dickson's calls had been the right choice—she was moving on. Yet, the weight of her personal financial situation remained. Repaying her own debts was still months away, and her account balance was bruisingly low. Finding comfort in her faith, she left her concerns to God and closed her eyes.
The next morning, the clock struck 8 AM just as Mr. Spencer's voice demanded the statements over the phone.
"Can I have the reports now?"
"Yes, sir," Brenda responded. Dressed in a sharp pink fitted gown accented with a white collar and black pointed heels, she walked straight into his office and handed over the bulky document. It bore the company's financial journey from July 21st, 2002 to the present.
Mr. Spencer flipped through the pages. "You've done an excellent job. Your competence is unquestionable. The embezzlement, how much are we talking about?"
"From September 1st, 2003 to March 3rd, 2008, a total of twenty million naira has been funneled out of the company's accounts into various private ones," Brenda responded with resolve. She then broke down the distribution of the ill-gotten funds among the five suspects using a strict mathematical ratio:
6:5:4:3:2
Mr. Spencer's astonishment was palpable. "Twenty million naira? My goodness! What drove them to this?"
"Greed and a lack of contentment," Brenda offered quietly.
By noon, the day had unfurled into a relentless storm of files and customer complaints. Exhausted, Brenda retreated to the bustling dining area.
Clutching his lunch tray, Jake made a beeline toward her table. With a polite smile, he inquired, "Mind if I join you?"
Brenda looked up. The frantic morning had left her hair slightly tousled, but she managed a warm smile. “Sure. You can.”
Jake slid into the chair next to her and bowed his head for a quick grace. He looked up, catching her watching him. “I guess I am short on stamina today.”
“You don’t seem it. You look like someone who sleeps at the gym, unlike me.”
He smiled, though his eyes studied her carefully. “Were you able to submit the financial reports?”
“I did, just this morning. I literally worked myself to the bone last night to get it done.” Suddenly, her phone rang. She pulled it from her purse, her face falling as "Dickson" flashed on the screen. Angrily, she shoved the phone back into her bag.
“I wouldn’t be wrong if I ask... is everything alright?” Jake asked, surprised by her intense reaction.
“That’s my ex-boyfriend,” Brenda confessed, sighing. “He cheated, yet he refuses to let go.”
“He wants you back?”
“Yes. But I am done. It is not the first time he has broken my trust.”
Jake looked at her with genuine empathy. “I’d advise you don’t give him another chance. You deserve better.”
“I wouldn’t have listened even if you said otherwise,” Brenda countered. They both laughed, and the heavy tension in the air dissolved.
At closing time, Brenda crossed the threshold of the office lobby and headed out into the parking lot. Just as she neared her car, her phone rang again. A surge of genuine relief washed over her when she saw the caller ID: her brother, Max.
"Hey!" she greeted warmly. Max was more than a sibling; he was her ultimate confidant.
"Got some news," Max said.
"Spill it," Brenda replied, waving goodbye to a few passing coworkers as she unlocked her car door. "What happened?"
“There is an issue at home. I am sure you can handle it.”
“I completely understand. Say no more, it’s been a tough day for you.”
“You know me too well,” Max laughed. He had recently finished his business degree in Benin and was staying with her. “Plus, with what is going on, all I did was listen to complaints all day long. Want to meet for a quick snack?”
“Sure,” she said, stepping into the car.
“I need comfort food.”
“Then I have the perfect place for you: Paco’s French Fries.”
“Great. I’ll be there in a few.”
“Deal.” She ended the call. Glancing down, she saw five unread messages from Dickson. He would have to learn the hard way. Ignoring him completely, she unrolled the windows to let the trapped afternoon heat escape, turned the ignition, and zoomed off into the traffic.
