Nature

Open your mind.

Have you ever been outside to listen to the birds and the breeze? Something so calming it makes the world around you disappear as you close your eyes. Getting lost in the feeling of calm, just to be able to get lost in thought. Forget about the problems you have, big or small.

Nobody around; imagine the smell of rain as it falls over your face. The outside is like flipping a switch on the universe, like taking a break from everyone and everything. Somewhere to be able to run, to get away from everything stressful. All worries can be forgotten, even if just for a second. You can take in the calm of nature. The peace of nobody around you. No worries, no dread. As you listen to the birds chirp and the leaves rustle in the wind, think about everything that you love in your life, even if it's just the small things.

Take a deep breath, realize that one embarrassing mistake you made today that you couldn't stop thinking about, and that everyone thought about it. Open your mind and see the world in front of you; that one mistake isn't the end. Nobody was thinking about it when they looked at you; they are too busy thinking about their own problems.

Lift your head as you walk. You are the main character in your own life, but you are not their main character. They don't nitpick at your mistakes. Just their own, just like you do. You are your own biggest enemy. You may think that feeling things is weak, something only small, mentally frail people do. That's just not true.

You are human.

You are here because your mother had you. Whether you argue or swear she hates you, she still went through pain to have someone as beautiful as you. Open up your mind; you don't have to admit it to others, but admit it to yourself. You will feel better when you unlock your other half, and I don't mean your soulmate; I mean you feeling open and accepting that you're human.

Some people can't feel like normal people. We are still trying to find our wind, our birds. Find yourself, your soul, what YOU are grateful to have, what YOU love or hate. It's about YOU. This is YOUR life, and YOU can control it. If you are in a grave and night is falling, close your eyes and open your mind, listen to your inner voice, not the surface that is digging that grave but the one that's whispering in the back of your head to help you.

Listen to the peace within yourself and move that shovel not to dig further but to dig stairs. It takes work, effort that will drain you. But don't stop and sink back down. Most people give up halfway when you can almost hear the birds and the breeze just in reach. Reach for the calm.

Fiona Walker: First of all I have to say that I really enjoyed this short story. I did find the single line paragraphs a little uncomfortable to read as it didn’t flow but the content was amusing and sweet. For me, the ending didn’t feel like an ending, it just stopped. I understand the implication of the final c...

Elle Petra: I really enjoyed reading about these characters from the outset. The concept is great, and well-executed. Toward the end of the story I found it difficult to continue to relate to the FMC, to the point where I didn't really hope the main characters would end up together. But this is likely just down...
