The Domes of Control
## 1.1: Marcus’s Experiment
Marcus liked to watch from the mezzanine, a ring of smoked glass suspended above the control hall like a lens that never blinked. From there, the domes displayed themselves on split screens: one a lattice of cobalt light and silicon pulse; the other a soft topography of papered roofs, wooden benches, and the slow shuffle of markets that smelled of flour and resin. He kept his hands clasped when he watched, a habit he’d taught himself. Hands betrayed intention. Clenched fist, idle tapping—tells that made subordinates uneasy. Calm hands suggested a calm world.
He had not been forced into the role of architect. He had stepped willingly into it, a collector of impulses—fear, ambition, tenderness—classifying them as if they were insects pinned in a drawer. What would happen, he had asked years ago in a voice that filled conference halls, if we separated our tools from our touch? What would humans become when all tasks were mediated by code? What would they become when nothing was mediated at all?
He built two answers.
The western dome rose from a basin of salt flats like a pearl with a metallic sheen. Inside, air hummed at a constant frequency. The walls were seamless. Interfaces slept until eyes woke them. People there worked in systems so efficient that waste itself was an anomaly to be reported and resolved. In their schools, children learned logic before they learned stories, and the stories they did hear obeyed probabilities that could be graphed. Marcus had overseen the installation of a mainframe whose ice-blue core lived beneath a mirrored plaza. It handled authorization gates, health monitoring, supply distribution—every necessary pulse of a body politic. He named the dome by its function, not its feel: Computation.
The eastern dome, by contrast, breathed. It exhaled warm bread from ovens, paper dust from mills, smoke from hearths tended by hands that smelled of cedar. Its curvature let in a filtered sun that softened everything into honey or dusk. Machines existed, yes—the kind you turned with a crank, the kind you fed with muscle and patience. But there were no screens. Markets communicated with chalk markers and bells. Courtyards were threaded with clotheslines that held letters like laundry. Children learned knots and script, wood joinery and ink stains that never quite left their fingertips. Marcus had insisted that the dome’s lighting respond to weather patterns recorded long before the domes were conceived, an algorithmic mimicry of a sky the inhabitants would never see. He called this place Correspondence.
His staff called him Director when he walked the halls. The word was a compromise between scientist and sovereign, and it didn’t particularize his motives. That was by design. In private, he kept notebooks that were half schematics, half confession. There were pages where he wrote about his mother’s hands, how she taught him to tie twine around a parcel with a knot that would not slip. There were pages where he wrote about the first simulation he ran in a lab that smelled like ozone, the thrill of watching variables bend under a will and behave.
Control, he had told himself, is not cruelty. It is context. In one dome, speed. In the other, friction. Each extreme would distill a human tendency, clarify it like sugar boiled to crack. And between the two? A barrier designed to transmit nothing but pressure, the physical presence of an elsewhere. He had seeded both sides with stories about the barrier. In Computation, it was a safety wall holding back a corroded world. In Correspondence, it was a sacred boundary that preserved their slow arts from the ravenous pace beyond. He told himself it wasn’t lying. He was giving meaning the way a parent gives a child a parable—tools before truth.
His error, which he did not yet name, was that he had underestimated longing. He had measured supply chains, education metrics, rates of conflict resolution. He had written models for romance and grief. He had not accounted for the persistent itch of elsewhere, an ache like a phantom limb that no dome could soothe. He saw hints of it in telemetry—wandering routes, pauses at the barrier longer than weather could explain—but he filed them away as noise.
On the mezzanine, his calm hands unclasped and touched the rail. His fingertips read the faint vibrations transmitted from the domes, as if the glass itself carried whispers. In Computation, a girl leaned into the glow of a terminal long after curfew. In Correspondence, a boy stayed late at the paper house, turning a book over and over as though it were a creature that might wake. Marcus brought up their profiles with a thought and did not linger on their names. To watch individuals too closely was to lose sight of patterns. He adjusted the light over the hall and told himself the experiment was proceeding.
The barrier, twenty meters thick and sunk deep into foundation, gleamed on his screens like a ring around a planet. No door, no hatch, no sanctioned channel. He had designed it to be absolute. He had also designed it to sing—just a note, at the edge of hearing, so that both sides would feel the comfort and the claustrophobia of harmony. It had taken him a decade to find that pitch. He had congratulated himself on the elegance of it.
Now he stood and listened to his domes breathe. Somewhere his monitors marked a spike, a bloom of curiosity that would, weeks from now, trace back to this night. He could not yet see the line. He would say later, to an empty room, that he had only wanted to make us better. He would never admit to the most human reason he’d had: he wanted to be the one to decide what better meant.
