Chapter 1: Kiss of the Past

The oven timer clicked to zero. The soft ticking of cooling metal settled into the quiet bakery.

Ambreen heard it, but she didn't move.

She stood at the steel counter with flour on her wrists, watching the sun come up orange through the shop's front glass. The light fell across the stacked bread unevenly, turning one side golden while leaving the other pale in shadow.

The bakery light and the early sunrise touched her softly, catching the warm glow of her skin and the quiet intensity in her dark eyes. Her graceful figure looked slim yet gently curved beneath the loose bakery clothes. The way her lips pressed together while she thought made her seem distant for a moment, lost somewhere inside herself. She looked timeless, the kind of beauty that stayed in people's minds long after they had looked away.

Marina Bakery would not open for another forty minutes. This was her favorite part of the day, before the customers arrived, before the noise and chatter filled the room, when the entire shop still smelled only of butter and yeast.

"Bread's going to burn," Sakib said from the doorway to the back kitchen, though he didn't look up from the crate of dates he was sorting.

"It's fine," she replied without turning around, sliding another tray across the steel counter.

"The last batch was darker too."

She let out a quiet breath and finally glanced toward the oven. "They're fine, Sakib."

"Just check once."

He came over anyway, reached past her shoulder, and pulled the tray out himself. The bottoms were a shade past gold, not burnt, and he set them on the cooling rack without a word. A small smile crossed her face, the kind that said *I told you so* without needing to say it. Six years married and he still did this — corrected her gently, always just enough to be annoying, never arrogant enough to fight about.

She swatted his arm with the back of her floured hand, leaving a pale white mark across his sleeve. He teased her back, mimicking her tone perfectly. She rolled her eyes, then laughed despite herself, the sound soft and warm and impossible not to love. Even after six years, that sound still made his heart beat a little harder.

That was the strange thing about loving someone for so long. He knew her in ways no one else did, the exact centimeters she liked the milk foam in her coffee, the songs she played when she was upset but pretending not to be, the way her moods shifted during her periods, and how she secretly wanted comfort without asking for it. So he brought her chocolates, handled the household chores without complaint, and stayed close without making a fuss about it. It had become natural to him over the years.

The customers hadn't arrived yet. For a few more minutes, the morning still belonged only to them. He set the heavy crate of fresh dates down with a soft thud and stepped behind her at the counter. His arms circled her waist with the familiarity of someone who had done this a thousand times and would never tire of it. His chin settled on her shoulder, and she felt the slow, unhurried rhythm of his breath against the sensitive skin of her neck. It was warm and steady. Then came the soft press of his lips, a lingering kiss just below her ear that sent a slow wave of heat unfurling through her chest.

Ambreen closed her eyes and leaned back into his tall frame, letting her head settle fully against the solid wall of his chest. His heartbeat thrummed against her ears It was strong and reassuring. She had been kneading dough since before dawn; her muscles ached in that pleasant, familiar way, but every trace of tension dissolved the moment he touched her. His hands found the ties of her apron, pulling them loose with deliberate care. The fabric whispered as it fell away, and he draped it over the nearby stool like he was setting aside the rest of the day.

Beneath the apron she wore only a thin, well-washed cotton shirt that clung softly to her skin. Sakib’s palms slipped beneath the hem, sliding upward over the smooth warmth of her stomach. His touch was reverent and roughened slightly by years of work, yet infinitely gentle. Ambreen’s breath hitched sharply as those warm hands mapped her body, thumbs brushing the undersides of her breasts. A shiver raced down her spine, pooling low in her belly as heat bloomed between her thighs.

“Customers will come in half an hour,” she whispered, her voice already husky with want.

Sakib’s low chuckle vibrated against her neck, sending another delicious tremor through her. “Then we have half an hour,” he murmured, the calm patience in his tone laced with unmistakable hunger. He had always been like this, steady, unhurried, yet utterly relentless once he was in the mood.

He turned her gently by the hips until her lower back met the flour-dusted edge of the steel counter. A faint white streak smeared across her exposed skin where her shirt had ridden up. Sakib’s dark eyes dropped to it, and the corner of his mouth curved. He cupped her face with one large hand, long fingers cradling her jaw with tender possession. His thumb traced slowly across her full, rosy lower lip, pressing lightly until her mouth parted on a soft exhale. Then he leaned in and kissed her deeply and slowly.

Ambreen melted into Sakib. The faint taste of dates and black coffee on his tongue, the warm scent of his skin mixed with yeast and spice, the steady, possessive way he held her. It all narrowed her world to him. She kissed him back with equal hunger, fingers threading into his thick hair and tugging lightly. Under the heat of his mouth, the lingering smell of slightly overbaked pastries faded. The world outside the bakery ceased to exist.

Her slim, feminine body relaxed completely against his taller, stronger frame. She loved how he enveloped her, how safe and desired she felt in his arms. Sakib’s hands slid down her back, palms smoothing over the curve of her waist before cupping her heart-shaped buttocks over the thin fabric of her trousers. He squeezed with clear, masculine possession, fingers digging in just enough to pull a soft, needy whimper from her throat. The sound seemed to ignite something in him. He drew her closer, pressing her core firmly against the hard cock straining beneath his trousers.

A low sound vibrated in his chest. Ambreen gasped into his mouth as sharp pleasure pulsed through her, her nipples tightening against the cotton of her shirt. She rocked against him instinctively, seeking more friction, and he answered by rolling his hips forward in a slow, deliberate grind that made her knees weak.

They broke the kiss only when breathing became necessary. Sakib’s thumb brushed her flushed cheek. Ambreen’s long dark lashes fluttered open, her soulful brown eyes were soft and unguarded in the golden light. In that look she poured everything: the deep love that had grown between them, the daily comfort of shared routines, and the fierce, ever-present desire that still burned as brightly as it had in the beginning.

Sakib’s voice was rough velvet. “I love feeling you like this… soft, warm and mine.” His hands flexed on her backside again, kneading the supple flesh of her buttocks as he held her flush against his arousal. His thick cock beneath the fabric pressed exactly where she ached most, sending little sparks of pleasure radiating outward with every tiny shift of their bodies.

Ambreen’s fingers traced the strong line of his jaw, then down to the pulse beating hard at the base of his throat. “I love being yours,” she whispered back, the words trembling with emotion and need. She could feel the heat of her own arousal soaking into her underwear, the slick ache building with every heartbeat. Her breasts felt heavy, sensitive; every brush of fabric against her nipples made her want to moan.

She leaned in to kiss him again. He groaned softly, the sound vibrating through both of them. “Half an hour,” he reminded her, though his voice had grown darker, thicker with restraint and desire. Their foreheads rested together, sharing the same heated breath. For a long moment they simply stayed like that, breathing hard, eyes half-closed, the world reduced to the space between their bodies.

It was a Tuesday morning. Flour still dusted her wrists and streaked her shirt. Sakib's heartbeat thundered against her ears, gradually slowing as he held her close.

"We have to be normal before the delivery boy comes," he said breathlessly, his voice still husky.

Ambreen laughed softly against his collarbone, the deep, warm sound vibrating near his chest and pulling a reluctant smile from her lips. She pressed one last lingering kiss to the side of his neck.

The satisfied ache still hummed low in her body as she smoothed her clothes. By the time the timer for the second batch went off, she was composed again, Her apron was neatly retied, shirt was buttoned, hair was smoothed back into place. Only the faint flush on her cheeks and the soft glow in her eyes remained as quiet evidence of what had just happened between them.

---

Her phone buzzed against the counter at 9:40. An unknown UAE number flashed on the screen. Ambreen usually ignored unknown calls, an old habit from years ago. But this time, she picked up.

Silence on the other end, then the faint sound of breathing.

The person spoke. The voice was low, familiar in a way that made her stomach drop.

There was a small pause. She could hear him breathing softly, as if he were carefully choosing words he'd already rehearsed. "Ambreen... how are you? Did you recognize my voice?"

She ended the call without saying a word, setting the phone down, her fingers pulling away from it too quickly.

Sakib was in the back, arguing cheerfully with the flour supplier over delivery times, his voice carrying warm and easy through the wall. Ambreen looked down at the phone still lying on the counter, then opened the call history and deleted it.

She remembered the voice. It was Deepak's. Some voices stayed with you no matter how many years passed, no matter how hard you tried to forget them.

---

That evening, the apartment kitchen filled with the smell of frying onions, garlic, and cumin crackling in hot oil. A pot simmered softly on the stove while rain tapped lightly against the balcony glass outside. The television murmured in the living room, low enough to blend into the background.

Ambreen stood at the counter cutting coriander leaves, her movements slow and distracted. Steam curled around her face as she reached for the salt, and a sudden, vivid memory flashed through her mind.

*Deepak's large, heavy hand cupping her bare breast, his thick fingers squeezing with confidence. Nineteen-year-old Ambreen gasping, back arching as he rolled her nipple between his fingers, sending sparks of unwanted pleasure through her body.*

Ambreen blinked rapidly, pushing the memory back into the shadows of her mind. It receded, but left a faint sting of guilt behind.

She stepped onto the small balcony behind the kitchen and slid the glass door shut behind her. The warm smell of spices faded slightly as the evening air touched her skin. Before she could change her mind, she pulled out her phone and dialed her cousin Mustafa's number.

He picked up on the fourth ring, his voice easy and careless. the same voice he'd had at twenty-two and would probably still have at sixty.

"Ambie." His tone carried a familiar, lazy warmth that instantly pulled her years backward. Nobody else got to call her that anymore. "Didn't expect you today."

"Deepak called me." She kept her voice flat and businesslike, the way she'd learned to keep it whenever she spoke to Mustafa.

A pause on his end, just half a second too long. "Did he."

"Don't do that," she said quietly. "Don't pretend you're surprised. You told him I live in Dubai."

"I'm not pretending anything. I don't even know who told him." Somewhere behind him she heard movement — a door opening, then a woman's voice asking him something. Mustafa replied under his breath, his hand probably half-covering the phone. Ambreen's jaw tightened. For one ugly moment, she wondered if he was with another call girl again, just like he always had been.

"Who is that," she said.

"Nobody."

"Mustafa."

A long breath came from his end of the call, half amused, half already tired of the conversation.

"Her name's Jhalak. She's staying with me. It's not your business."

"It's not my business," Ambreen said coldly. "But I know about your escort business."

"It's not the same thing." His voice had an edge now, the charm gone, replaced by a frustration she recognized — the tone that always surfaced whenever he felt trapped in a conversation he could no longer control. "She's not one of my call girls, Ambreen. She's just—" He stopped before finishing the sentence. Another voice sounded in the background. Mustafa let out a quiet breath and covered the phone again, saying something too low for her to hear.

"Don't do with her what you did with me," Ambreen said, quieter this time, though the anger in her voice hadn't left it.

"You should worry about your own life first." When Mustafa spoke again, his voice had gone calm and smooth once more, every trace of irritation carefully hidden. "Look, I'm not doing this with you right now. What do you actually want?"

"I want you to leave me alone. I want Deepak to leave me alone too. Tell him I have a life here, Mustafa. I have a husband now. I built something for myself, and I don't want it ruined."

"I never called him."

"He was your client. You were the one who arranged for him to meet me. So now it's your responsibility to keep him away from me." Her grip tightened around the phone. "And if my marriage gets ruined because of this, I'll tell your family about your side business."

"It's our family," Mustafa said quietly as he is frightened of getting exposed. "We're cousins. If our past comes out, it won't just ruin things for us. It'll shame the whole family."

"Do it soon."

"Ambie—" he started to say.

Ambreen cut him off. "I have to go." She ended the call before he could say anything else.

She stayed on the kitchen balcony for a full minute after the call ended, staring out at the city lights beyond the buildings, her dark eyes distant and unfocused as memories moved quietly through her mind.

Somewhere behind the wall she heard Sakib's laugh again. The sound only reminded her of how much distance now lay between the version of the woman standing on this balcony and the version of the woman he believed he had married.. how carefully she had built the wall between them, brick by brick, six years of ordinary Tuesday mornings, and how one call from Deepak had been enough to put a single, hairline crack straight through the middle of it.
