Chapter 1: The Offer

The rain had been falling over New York since late afternoon, turning thestreets into a sea of shimmering lights and blurred reflections.

Inside Mason's Café, Emma Carter tied her apron tighter andforced a smile as she carried another cup of coffee to a customer.

"Thank you," the elderly man said warmly.

"My pleasure," Emma replied.

She smiled until he looked away.

Only then did the smile disappear.

She was exhausted.

She had been on her feet since six that morning. After finishing her shiftat the bookstore, she had hurried across town to work the evening shift at thecafé. Two jobs. Seven days a week.

Still, it wasn't enough.

The bills kept coming.

The debt kept growing.

At 10:45 p.m., the café was almost empty.

Emma wiped the last table and looked through the rain-covered window.

Across the street stood a man dressed in an expensive black suit. Even froma distance, she could tell he wasn't ordinary.

He wasn't looking at the traffic.

He was looking at her.

A chill ran through her body.

She looked away, convincing herself she was imagining things.

Her phone vibrated.

Mom.

Emma answered immediately.

"Hi, Mom."

There was silence.

Then she heard quiet sobbing.

Her heart tightened.

"Mom? What's wrong?"

"The bank came again."

Emma closed her eyes.

"They gave us seven days."

Seven days.

Those two words struck harder than any storm.

The little house where she had grown up... the house her father had builtwith his own hands... would soon belong to someone else.

"I'm so sorry," her mother whispered. "I've failed you."

"No," Emma said quickly, fighting back tears. "Please don'tsay that."

"What are we going to do?"

Emma stared at the floor.

She didn't have an answer.

"I'll find a way," she whispered.

"You always say that."

The call ended.

Emma remained frozen, gripping the phone until her fingers turned white.

She had promised her late father that she would protect the family.

Now she was about to lose everything.

"Long day?"

Emma looked up.

Her manager, Carlos, smiled sympathetically.

"You should go home. I'll close up."

She nodded.

"Thanks."

She removed her apron, picked up her worn backpack, and stepped outside.

The rain had become lighter.

She had barely taken three steps before a sleek black luxury car stoppedbeside her.

Its doors didn't open.

The windows remained dark.

Emma slowed her pace.

A second later, the rear door opened.

A tall man in a tailored black suit stepped out.

He looked to be in his forties.

His expression was calm.

Professional.

Almost emotionless.

"Miss Emma Carter?"

Emma hesitated.

"Yes?"

He gave a slight nod.

"My employer would like to meet you."

Emma frowned.

"I think you have the wrong person."

"We do not."

"I don't know your employer."

"You don't need to."

She took a step backward.

"I'm not interested."

The man reached into his jacket and removed a black envelope.

He held it toward her.

"Please."

Emma didn't take it.

"What is it?"

"An invitation."

She folded her arms.

"I don't accept invitations from strangers."

The man placed the envelope into her backpack's front pocket before shecould stop him.

"My employer believes you will change your mind."

Emma pulled the envelope out and tried to hand it back.

The man was already getting into the car.

The door closed.

Within seconds, the black sedan disappeared into the rainy night.

Emma stood alone on the sidewalk.

"What on earth was that?"

Curiosity finally won.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a thick cream-colored card with elegant black lettering.

KINGSTON GROUP

Below it was a short message.

Miss Emma Carter,

Please arrive at Kingston Tower tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

A car will be waiting for you.

She turned the card over.

A single handwritten sentence appeared on the back.

Marry Alexander Kingston, and every debt your family owes willdisappear.

Emma's breathing stopped.

Marry...

A stranger?

She read the sentence again.

And again.

There had to be a mistake.

Nobody offered millions of dollars in exchange for marriage.

Nobody.

Her phone buzzed once more.

This time it wasn't a call.

It was a text from an unknown number.

Don't ignore this invitation.

Your future depends on it.

Emma slowly looked up.

Across the street...

A man stood beneath a black umbrella.

Watching her.

The moment their eyes met, he turned and disappeared into the night.

Emma felt her heartbeat thunder in her chest.

Who was Alexander Kingston?

And why did he want to marry her?

She had a feeling that opening the envelope was about to change her lifeforever.
