Chapter 1
LOGAN
I followed Ambria to our bedroom, the knots in my stomach twisting and attempting to further tangle themselves. I took a deep breath, reminding myself that everything would be okay if I just told her the truth and remained calm. “You wanted to talk?”
“Yeah,” she said. Her voice sounded shaky and sad. “I… I don’t really know what to do. I really want to believe you…”
“Then you should!” I shouted, taking her hands into mine. “Please, please believe me! I never meant to hurt you. Dani kissed me. I should have just shoved her away, but she was so drunk, and I didn’t want to hurt her, and I really was at my friend Chris’s house! You can even call him and ask!” I wasn’t sure whether pleading with her would help, but I had to do everything I could.
“I… I just don’t know, Logan,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes.
“Please! I… I love you, Ambria.” I wrapped my arms around her and squeezed her against my chest. Her body shook gently as she cried.
She pulled herself away from me, placing a hand on my arm. “Listen, I’m going to spend the weekend with Astra at her… our… Mother’s house. I just need some time to think, okay? Besides, I think a couple of days apart will do us good. We haven’t really had that since I got here.”
“Are we… are we breaking up?” I asked.
She shook her head. “No. I just… I need to go meet my family and have some space. That’s all, okay?”
“Okay,” I replied softly. I leaned down and kissed her and, though she kissed me back, I could feel her hesitation.
She grabbed a backpack and threw a bunch of clothes into it, and some stuff from the bathroom. “I’ll see you Sunday night when I get back.”
I nodded. She was almost out of the room when I ran to her side and grabbed her hand. Her eyes sparkled with residual tears as she looked up into mine, and a part of me felt as though she was staring into my very soul. “I meant what I said,” I told her, and with that she was gone.
