Return to Ash Island

Chapter One: Return to Ash Island

My name is Elena.

I am thirty years old, yet I feel as though I have lived three lifetimes.

I never knew my father.

They told me he died before I was old enough to recognize his face. His name became nothing more than a faded memory in my mother's heart, and eventually, a silence no one dared to break.

My mother...

She was my entire world.

She worked as a maid in the magnificent mansions scattered across Sun Island, the paradise that wealthy travelers praised in magazines and travel guides as heaven on earth.

Heaven...

How I hate that word.

To me, heaven looked very different.

It was my mother's gentle hand brushing my hair after an exhausting day of work.

It was her weary smile.

It was the piece of bread she secretly hid inside her apron so I could eat without the masters of the house noticing.

The island itself...

It was never paradise.

It was a prison.

Every street carried the memory of humiliation.

Every mansion concealed a story of cruelty behind its elegant walls.

Every smile from its privileged residents masked their contempt for people beneath them.

When I turned seventeen...

My mother died.

The doctor said illness had taken her life.

I knew better.

People had killed her.

Years of humiliation, endless labor, and relentless abuse slowly crushed her spirit until her heart simply gave up.

Standing beside her grave, I made a promise that no one else heard.

I will come back.

Not as a maid.

Not as a victim.

I will return one day, and this island will pay for everything it has done.

A few days later, I left for Seattle, where my Aunt Monica lived—the only person who reached out to me after everyone else turned away.

There, I began a new life.

I enrolled in the College of Fine Arts.

I learned to paint.

But I was learning something else as well...

Patience.

I painted faces while studying every expression.

I learned how people hide behind masks.

How a smile can be far more dangerous than a knife.

Thirteen years passed.

I became a different woman.

Calm on the outside...

A volcano waiting to erupt on the inside.

The ferry slowly approached the harbor.

I lifted my eyes toward the island.

Nothing had changed.

The golden beaches.

The towering palm trees.

The luxurious villas overlooking the sea.

The wealthy laughing as though the world had been created solely for them.

A faint smile crossed my lips.

A smile without warmth.

I picked up my suitcase and stepped onto the dock.

It was my first step on this island in thirteen years.

I whispered so quietly that only the wind could hear me.

"Did you miss me?"

The sea breeze carried my words away, as if the island itself had heard them.

I gazed toward the horizon before making one final promise to myself.

"They call you Sun Island..."

"But I..."

"I will turn you into Ash Island."

As the waves crashed against the stone pier, no one realized that a single woman had returned carrying enough fire in her heart to reduce an entire empire to ashes.

The thirteen years I spent in Seattle were never an escape from the past.

They were a complete transformation.

At the College of Fine Arts, I learned that color could hide the truth, and that light could make even the ugliest things appear beautiful.

I excelled in artistic design, and my work caught the attention of professors long before it attracted the interest of major companies.

After graduation, I didn't look for a job.

I created one.

I started by designing floral arrangements and artistic decorations for weddings. What began as a small idea soon grew into a company specializing in luxury wedding planning.

That was when Lucia entered my life.

She became my business partner, my closest friend, and the complete opposite of me.

While I preferred silence, Lucia filled every room with laughter.

While I planned every step with precision, she believed that the most beautiful moments were born from spontaneity.

Despite our differences, we understood each other without words.

Lucia was a stunning young woman with long chestnut hair and warm honey-colored eyes. She possessed an extraordinary talent for combining flowers, colors, and elegant décor. Before long, the most influential families in Seattle were competing to hire our company for their celebrations.

Within a few years, our name became well known in the world of luxury weddings.

We didn't simply sell flowers...

We created dreams.

But for me...

I was building something else.

I was building wealth.

And wealth meant freedom.

Freedom meant revenge that no one could stop.

One week before my return to the island, Lucia walked into my office carrying a gold-colored folder.

She smiled as she waved it in front of me.

"We've received a new offer."

I looked up from the sketches spread across my desk.

"Who's the client this time?"

Her excitement was impossible to hide.

"One of the richest businessmen on Sun Island wants us to organize a legendary wedding for his daughter."

My hand froze.

Sun Island...

The name alone was enough to awaken every painful memory.

Lucia noticed the sudden change in my expression.

"Are you all right?" she asked gently.

I closed the folder lying on my desk and turned toward the window.

After a long silence, I finally spoke.

"We'll accept the offer."

Lucia smiled.

"I knew you would. The payment alone is enough to buy a new house."

A mysterious smile appeared on my face.

If only she knew...

I wasn't returning for the money.

I was returning because fate had finally opened the door I had been waiting thirteen years to walk through.

And now...

It was time to step inside.

That night, I stood alone before the mirror.

I was no longer the little girl who hid behind her mother.

I had become a woman who knew how to wear a mask of calm while an unquenchable fire burned within her.

Tomorrow...

I would return to the island.

But this time, I would not be the maid everyone looked down upon.

I would be the woman they would proudly welcome into their mansions...

Never realizing they had opened their doors to their greatest enemy.

As the wooden boat approached the island's pier, the sun's rays flowed across the sea like streams of molten gold. Seagulls soared overhead, their cries echoing through the sky, while gentle waves broke against the white rocks surrounding Sun Island—the island whose breathtaking beauty concealed secrets known only to a chosen few.

Elena stood at the bow of the boat, the sea breeze playing with her long golden hair. She wore a simple white dress that danced gracefully with the wind, making her look like a masterpiece brought to life. Beside her stood Lucia, dressed in a sky-blue gown and a wide-brimmed hat adorned with delicate white flowers. Her emerald-green eyes wandered across the island with a mixture of admiration and curiosity.

Smiling, Lucia said,"Can a place this beautiful really exist? It feels as if we've stepped into another world."

Elena kept her eyes fixed on the distant mansions before replying quietly,"Beauty doesn't always tell the truth, Lucia... I know this island far better than you can imagine."

The moment their feet touched the pier, heads began to turn. Residents and visitors alike paused to admire the two young women. It wasn't merely their extraordinary beauty that captured everyone's attention, but the quiet elegance surrounding them, as though they belonged to another era.

Before them stretched stone-paved streets lined with towering palm trees and vibrant tropical flowers. The fragrance of jasmine blended with the salty sea breeze, creating a scent unlike any other in the world.

Lucia laughed softly."If we organized weddings here, every ceremony would become a legend."

For the first time since their arrival, Elena smiled.

"That's exactly why we came... to begin a new life."

Deep inside, however, she knew the island never offered anyone a fresh start without a price. The past she had buried years ago was waiting for her behind the grand seaside mansions.

High upon a hill, an elderly man stood on the balcony of a magnificent mansion, holding a small telescope as he watched the newcomers arrive. The instant his eyes settled on Elena, they widened in disbelief. In a trembling voice, he whispered,

"Impossible... the maid's daughter has returned."

At that very moment, fate began weaving a new chapter—one that would forever change the destiny of the entire island.
