Chapter 1: The Echo in the Blood
Miles away from the safety of the valley, Thorn slammed his foot on the brake, the tires of his truck screeching against the asphalt of a lonely mountain road. He gripped the steering wheel so tightly the leather groaned under his calloused palms.
A sudden, agonizing jolt of phantom pain had just sliced through his wrists—a burning, raw agony that didn't belong to his body, followed by a wave of pure, suffocating terror. His Alpha wolf reared up beneath his skin, claws scraping against his consciousness, howling at a phantom threat.
Thorn gasped for air, his chest heaving as his irises bled into a fierce, predatory gold. He looked down at his unblemished wrists, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. Someone is dying, his wolf roared. Our mate is bleeding. Without a second thought, Thorn threw the truck into reverse, whipped the wheel around, and tore back toward the estate down the mountain.
Hours earlier, at the misty border where the pack lands met the human town, Evie had been on a routine patrol when she caught the scent of copper and burnt sugar.
Following the trail into a dense thicket of briars, she had expected to find a wounded forest animal. Instead, she found him.
He was curled into a trembling, pathetic ball beneath a fallen log. At first glance, Evie’s heart leaped into her throat—she thought she was looking at an abused human child. He had a tiny, heartbreakingly delicate frame, but as she gently cleared the damp leaves from his face, she noticed the faint, elegant point of small elf-like ears hidden beneath matted dark hair. He was a Fae. A male Fae, completely unconscious, his breathing shallow and ragged.
But it was his hands that made Evie’s blood run entirely cold.
Heavy, crude iron shackles were still locked around his wrists. The skin beneath them was a mutilated nightmare—layers of old, thick scar tissue built over fresh, weeping tears of blood where he had desperately tried to twist his hands free. He hadn't just been captured; he had been kept as a slave, a horrific plaything for someone who had hunted him down like an animal.
Evie’s first human instinct was to scream, to scoop him up and fly to the nearest human emergency room. But as she looked at the brutal iron collars, reality struck her like a physical blow. A human hospital meant doctors. Doctors meant the police, a massive criminal investigation, fingerprints, and DNA tests. The trail would lead straight back to these mountains. It would blow the cover of the pack, exposing Kelti, Ambrocios, and her entire family to the human world.
"Hang on, little one," Evie whispered fiercely.
She shed her heavy waxed jacket, wrapped his fragile, childlike body securely within the thick fabric, and scooped him up into her arms. He weighed almost nothing. Sprinting back to her vehicle, she threw the car into drive and sped toward the manor.
As the estate gates flew open, Evie threw her mind open, desperately reaching for the telepathic pack link.
Ambrocios! Get Dr. Elena to the main house right now! I have a child—he's mutilated, he's barely breathing!
Inside the grand manor, Ambrocios winced as Evie’s frantic mental voice crashed into his mind. At twenty-six, the pack Luna was glowing, but he was currently six months pregnant with his and Kelti's third child. His heavily rounded belly made moving difficult, but the moment he felt his sister's panic, his maternal instincts flared. He gasped, pushing himself up from the living room sofa, his hand resting protectively over his stomach as he tried to hurry toward the front doors to help.
"Luna, absolutely not! Please, sit!"
The estate's head butler and two maids instantly intervened, gently but firmly blocking Ambrocios from straining himself. The tires of Evie's car roared to a halt outside, and seconds later, she burst through the heavy timber doors, carrying the bundled, silent jacket in her arms.
Ambrocios choked back a sob at the sight of the blood on Evie's sleeves. "Evie, what happened? Give him to me—"
"He's too heavy for you right now, Ambro," Evie panted, her face pale. "And he's not human."
The butler quickly took charge, directing the two maids. "Take the boy upstairs immediately. Prepare the room next to the Alpha's study."
It was the very same room Ambrocios had lived in when he first arrived at the estate years ago—a quiet, secure sanctuary filled with warmth. The maids gently took the unconscious Fae from Evie's arms, rushing him up the grand staircase to be bathed, cleaned, and attended to with fresh linens.
Within ten minutes, the front doors opened again, and Dr. Elena hurried into the hall, her medical bag gripped tightly in her hand. She gave the pregnant Luna a reassuring nod before flying up the stairs to treat the mysterious patient.
Down in the grand hall, the heavy, suffocating aura of a dominant Alpha filled the room as Kelti stepped out of his study, his face dark with gravity. He walked straight to Ambrocios first, wrapping a massive, protective arm around his pregnant mate’s waist to ground his spiking anxiety, before turning his piercing amber eyes onto Evie.
"Explain," Kelti commanded quietly, his deep baritone echoing through the quiet hall. "What did you find at the border, Evie?"
Evie wiped a streak of the boy's blood from her cheek, her hands trembling with a rare, furious rage as she prepared to tell the Alpha about the shackles, the scars, and the hidden monster hunting on their lands.
