Maya was nineteen years old and believed she had found the love of her life

She met Jordan at a coffee shop during her first semester of college. He was handsome, funny, and always knew how to make her smile. Before long, they were spending every day together.

Everyone said they looked like the perfect couple.

Jordan surprised her with flowers, bought her favorite snacks, and constantly told her she was beautiful. Maya had never felt so loved.

"You'll never have to worry when you're with me," Jordan told her one evening.

She smiled and believed every word.

Months passed, and their relationship grew more serious.

Then little things began to change.

Jordan didn't like Maya hanging out with her best friend, Ava. He said Ava was a bad influence.

He became upset whenever Maya talked to other guys—even classmates working on school projects.

Soon, Jordan wanted to know where she was every hour of every day.

"If you loved me," Jordan would say, "you'd answer your phone immediately."

Maya apologized, even when she had done nothing wrong.

One Friday afternoon, Jordan texted her.

"Come over tonight. I have a surprise for you."

Maybe things were getting better.

She wore her favorite dress and headed to his house after sunset.

Jordan greeted her with a smile.

"You look amazing," he said.

She stepped inside.

Maya turned around.

"Why did you lock the door?"

"So no one interrupts us," he answered.

Something about his voice made her nervous.

She tried to laugh it off.

"So... what's the surprise?"

Jordan's smile disappeared.

"I need your phone."

"What?"

"Your phone."

Confused, Maya handed it to him.

"Now your wallet."

"Jordan... what's going on?"

"Do it."

His voice was cold.

Her heart started racing.

She slowly gave him her wallet.

Jordan searched through it, taking her cash, debit card, and credit card.

Then he looked at her necklace.

"Take that off too."

Maya froze.

"Jordan..."

"I said take it off."

With trembling hands, she removed the necklace her grandmother had given her.

Jordan stuffed it into his pocket.

Tears filled Maya's eyes.

"This isn't funny."

"I'm not joking."

He pulled the curtains closed and looked directly at her.

"You're staying here until I decide otherwise."

For the first time, Maya realized the man she loved wasn't the man she thought she knew.

He had been pretending all along.
