Waking Up in the Hospital One Year Later
My eyes slowly opened to a sterile white ceiling.
For a few seconds, I simply stared at it, unable to understand where I was. Every inch of my body ached.
The only sound I could hear was the steady rhythm of the hospital monitors.
A nurse sitting by the window outside my room nearly dropped her clipboard when she realized I was awake.
“Oh my God...”
she exclaimed as she rushed into the room.
She gently placed her hands on my shoulders and eased me back onto the bed.
“Please, Andrew, don’t move. You’ve been in a coma for a year.”
At first, I barely heard her.
The last thing I remembered was my wedding.
Angel smiling beneath her veil.
The wedding ring sliding onto her finger.
Her laughter as we talked about our honeymoon.
The truck crossing into our lane.
My hands jerking the steering wheel.
Then the words finally sank in.
A coma.
One year.
My eyes immediately swept across the room.
I looked for Angel.
She wasn’t there.
A thousand thoughts flooded my mind all at once.
The nurse hurried to calm me down, promising she would call her.
Nearly an hour later, the door finally opened.
Angel was standing there.
The flowers she was carrying slipped from her hands the instant she saw me awake.
She rushed toward me.
She wrapped her arms around me so tightly I could barely breathe and burst into tears.
Before I could even properly return the embrace, another figure stepped into the room behind her.
Josh.
My best friend from college.
He greeted me with a smile.
When Angel finally stepped back from the hug and came to stand beside him, Josh rested a hand on her waist.
She quickly moved his hand away.
It was such a subtle gesture.
But I noticed it.
It struck me as odd, though I didn’t think much of it.
My wife was there.
She was with me.
And at that moment, that was all that mattered.
After that, Angel stayed by my side every single day.
At night, she slept on the small couch in my hospital room.
Over the following days, I went through countless medical examinations.
Learning to walk again was much harder than I had imagined.
My muscles refused to respond the way I wanted them to.
Angel helped me through every step.
Every single day.
Josh stopped by almost every day to check on my progress.
And after each visit, Angel would leave with him for a few minutes.
I never knew what they talked about.
But Angel always came back with red eyes and a weary smile.
I never asked about those conversations.
I could only think about one thing.
Angel was here.
She had waited for me.
At that moment, I believed there was nothing in the world that could make me doubt her.
Finally, a month later, she brought me home.
To my surprise...
Josh was there too.
That was when I first began to wonder.
Why was Josh living in my house?
The first few hours were peaceful.
Angel smiled more than she had in days.
Josh helped with the chores, often disappearing into another room with her.
I noticed everything.
But I didn’t say a word.
At lunch, the three of us sat together for hours, talking about ordinary things.
That night, I woke up needing to use the bathroom.
I noticed that Angel’s side of the bed was empty.
Looking through the bedroom doorway, I saw light spilling into the hallway from the guest room...
The room where Josh was staying.
I quietly followed.
When I reached the doorway, I found Angel standing face-to-face with Josh.
I slipped into the shadows, my heart pounding as I watched in silence.
Josh was holding a small ring in his hand.
At first, I couldn’t make out what it was.
But as my eyes adjusted to the light, I realized it was a gold wedding band.
“We can still leave,” Josh said quietly.
“It’s not too late.”
For a moment, Angel simply stared at the ring.
Then she gently pushed his hand away, refusing it.
“My husband is in the next room, Josh.”
For the first time that night, there was genuine anger in her voice.
The pieces began falling into place in my mind.
“Please... don’t do something we’ll both regret.”
Hidden in the darkness, I realized that Josh had become far more than my best friend.
I remained silent, watching the conversation unfold.
“I’m not abandoning my husband after everything that’s happened. He finally woke up, and now I’m going to devote myself to him.”
“But what about us? Everything we’ve been through these past six months...”
A heavy silence settled between them for several seconds before Angel finally answered.
“I waited for him for an entire year, Josh. Now that he’s back... I’m going back to him.”
She spoke as she turned away, her eyes falling to the wedding band on her finger.
Going back to him?
Six months?
Confusion washed over me.
But the tone of their conversation told me more than enough.
The pieces began fitting together.
Josh’s hand on Angel’s waist at the hospital.
Their private conversations every day.
Josh living in my house.
That ring.
“But what about us?”
My stomach dropped.
Had she kept our promise?
For the first time since waking up...
I was afraid of the answer.
Then a memory struck me.
Months before the wedding, during a conversation at a bar, Josh had admitted that he envied the woman I had found.
Josh had been by Angel’s side throughout that entire year.
I had no idea what had happened between them during that time.
But something had happened.
How far had they gone?
I had to know.
So I stayed hidden, hoping they would say more.
I was still praying that I had misunderstood everything.
“Whatever you think we had ended the moment my husband opened his eyes.”
“Now that he’s back, everything has changed.”
“You need to leave tomorrow.”
“I don’t want him to find out what happened between us while he was in a coma.”
The moment I heard those words...
I couldn’t take it anymore.
I stepped into the room, my voice shaking.
“Can someone explain what happened during the year I was in a coma?”
They both jumped in surprise, their eyes widening as they turned toward me.
Angel instinctively took a step back.
My eyes dropped to the gold wedding band still in Josh’s hand.
“You...”
“You tried to steal her from me?”
“No... I...”
His eyes darted to the ring.
In one quick motion, he shoved it into his pocket, hoping I hadn’t noticed the gold band.
“Explain yourselves.”
“And tell me everything!”
“Andrew, please...” Angel pleaded. “You just came out of a coma. Let’s talk about this calmly...”
She looked at me.
Then at Josh.
Then back at me before continuing.
“Josh is leaving tomorrow.”
“No.”
“I want to know exactly what happened during these ‘six months of our story.’”
Angel trembled.
Tears filled her eyes almost instantly.
She lowered her head and stood there in silence for several long seconds before finally finding the courage to speak.
“We grew closer during those six months...”
“For the last four months, he’s been living here to help me take care of you...”
“But... but it’s over now. He’s leaving tomorrow, and I’m going to devote myself to you, my love.”
Her voice broke on the last words.
“So you really did try to steal my wife from me, Josh?”
I stared at him for several seconds.
“Some best friend you turned out to be.”
“I only want one answer.”
“What happened between you two?”
By then, my voice had risen.
My eyes moved from one of them to the other as I waited for someone to answer.
Both of them lowered their heads.
A heavy silence settled over the room.
A silence filled with words neither of them could bring themselves to say.
In that silence, I realized that nothing I was about to hear could ever give me back the life I’d had before the accident.
“Angel.”
I paused.
“Look at me.”
I took a slow breath before speaking again.
“What about our promise?”
To me...
It felt like I had only gone to sleep for one night.
To her...
An entire year had passed.
She frowned in confusion.
“Our promise?”
Then she remembered.
The realization hit her all at once.
She collapsed to her knees, understanding that she had made the greatest mistake of her life...
And that there was no undoing it.
“No... I...”
“I understand.”
“So...”
“Your body belongs to someone else now.”
“No!”
“My body never stopped belonging to you! I was weak... I made a terrible mistake... but I never stopped loving you!”
she cried, cutting me off.
“You can both leave tomorrow morning.”
“I’ll manage on my own.”
I looked down at the wedding band on my finger.
I slowly turned it around for a few seconds.
Then I slipped it off...
And dropped it at Angel’s feet.
Angel fell forward, wrapping her arms around my legs as she begged me not to leave.
“Please, my love... don’t leave me.”
“I made a terrible mistake, but I love you.”
“You’re everything to me...”
Josh stood off to the side, unable to meet my eyes.
I knew he had always envied me for winning Angel’s heart.
When he saw how vulnerable she had become, the opportunity he’d been waiting for had finally appeared.
And while I lay helpless in that hospital bed, trapped in a coma, he had tried to take her away from me.
He had manipulated her.
“I don’t care!”
“You broke your promise.”
“It meant everything to me.”
“You gave another man what you promised to save for me.”
“Go with him.”
“I can’t even look at you anymore.”
“You’re not the woman I married.”
“Every time I look at you, I can’t see the woman who walked into that church with me.”
“All I can see...”
“...is the two of you together.”
I grabbed the first jacket within reach and walked out of the house.
I wandered the city without any destination, trying to cool my head and make sense of everything.
Leaving both of them behind.
Angel tried to run after me.
Josh stopped her, grabbing her by the arm.
“Let him go.”
“He’ll come back.”
“He’ll accept it.”
The certainty in his voice made it sound like he truly believed it.
I kept wandering through the streets until I found a bar that was still open.
I had promised Angel I would never set foot in a bar again.
That night...
That promise felt as though it had died too.
I drank far more than I should have.
But alcohol had never affected me easily.
So by morning—without even knowing what time it was—I went back home.
When I opened the front door, Angel was standing there waiting for me.
Her hands were pressed against her chest, her face filled with worry.
I stopped.
I looked at her for several seconds.
She took one step toward me.
I walked past her...
Without saying a single word.
That was the night I realized silence could hurt far more than any words I could ever say.
I went into the bathroom to take a shower.
Behind me, Angel collapsed to her knees.
She didn’t try to stop me.
I think she understood that anything she said in that moment would only make everything worse.
I stayed in the shower for a long time, letting the scalding water nearly burn my skin.
When I finally came out, I saw Josh standing in the doorway of the guest room, watching me.
I looked straight at him.
“Be out of this house by noon.”
My tone left no room for negotiation.
“And take her with you.”
“Or leave her at her mother’s house.”
“You stopped being my friend.”
“And she stopped being my wife.”
Josh stood motionless for a moment.
His eyes dropped to my clenched fists before returning to my face.
Without saying a word, he turned and walked back into the guest room.
As Angel packed her clothes into a suitcase, she kept looking up at me from time to time, as though she still hoped I would say just one word...
One word that would make her stay.
“Andrew...”
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“I never wanted to cause you this kind of pain.”
“I was alone... I was lost... I had no hope.”
“Josh was there for me.”
“And eventually... one thing led to another.”
“I swear to you...”
“I love you.”
“Josh was...”
“Temporary?” I cut her off.
Silence settled between us for a brief moment.
A bitter laugh escaped me before I continued.
“Maybe it was temporary to you... but he stole our promise from me. The one thing—the only thing—we had always dreamed of sharing together.”
“Our first time.”
“He stole that from me.”
“He marked you forever.”
“You didn’t just betray our wedding vows...”
“You broke the promise.”
“The only promise that ever truly mattered.”
My voice was steady.
But underneath it was a sadness I couldn’t hide.
I stood there in silence for a long moment before taking a deep breath.
“I want you to leave.”
“Even after waiting for me through that entire year while I was in a coma... you never should have given yourself to someone else.”
“You were still my wife.”
Her shoulders collapsed before I had even finished speaking.
Every word seemed to steal another breath from her lungs.
Her legs gave out beneath her, and she fell to her knees for the second time that morning.
She covered her face with both hands, but it did nothing to hide her sobs.
“I was weak.”
She paused.
“I ruined everything.”
Another, longer silence followed.
“Our marriage never even had the chance to begin...”
“And it’s all my fault.”
She looked up at me again, her voice breaking through her tears.
“I was alone.”
“I was scared.”
“Every day I sat beside your hospital bed, wondering if you would ever wake up.”
“But none of that excuses what I did.”
She slowly stood, wiping away her tears as she struggled to regain her composure.
“I hope that one day...”
“You’ll be able to forgive me.”
A few hours later, Angel and Josh left the apartment.
Before walking out the door, Angel looked back at me one last time.
Her eyes were filled with sorrow...
And regret.
The door closed behind them.
Silence settled over the apartment.
Heavy.
Suffocating.
I kept staring at the door, as if part of me still expected her to come back.
Then my legs gave out beneath me.
I collapsed onto the floor.
“Why?”
The words hung in the empty room.
“Why did this have to happen to me?”
I took a shaky breath and looked down at my left hand.
The wedding band was gone.
When I finally forced myself to stand, my eyes drifted toward the dining table.
Three mugs were still sitting there from the night before.
Mine.
Angel’s.
Josh’s.
I simply stared at them.
I didn’t touch a single one.
I just stood there...
And cried.

I hope he finds someone
Well, at least he woke up to the truth. If his wife couldn't wait one year for him, then they never should have gotten married in the first place. 👍
