Mae sat in the car, her phone in her hands. The car was parked at the airport. After going to college overseas, her stepbrother Owen was finally coming home. She was 11 years old when he left. They went to a nearby dine-in restaurant to eat. While Owen shared stories with their parents about his adventures overseas, Mae was still trying to come to terms with how different he was. During one story, he looked over and winked at her. Mae blushed and looked away.

She didn’t speak much over dinner. When they got home, she went straight to her room. Once upon a time, she never wanted to leave her stepbrother’s side. Now, she felt strange around him. Like… she wasn’t herself. She didn’t like how he was making her feel.

A knock came at her door. “Honey, can I come in?”

It was her mom.

“Sure,” said Mae, seated on her bed.

“It’s just you’ve been really quiet since we picked your brother up at the airport,” said Mom.

“Weird how?”

Mae didn’t know how to explain it without making herself sound like a creep. “I don’t know. It’s been years. I guess I just need to get used to him being around again.”

Mom walked over to the bed and took a seat. She looked at Mae with a sympathetic look. “I know it was hard on you when he left…”

“Mom, it’s not that.”

“It’s okay if you’re a little upset. But I think it would be a good idea if you spend some time with him. Get to know him again. I used to love how close the two of you were. I always wanted you to have a brother. When I married Oscar, I was so happy I finally found you one.”

Mae smiled slightly, but she didn’t know what to say. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to get to know the new Owen. She missed him, that much was true, but they were both grown now. She didn’t think it’d ever be the same. Not like when they were kids.

“Will you try? For me?” asked Mom.

“I’ll try,” said Mae, mostly just to humor her mom.

“Thanks, sweetie.”

She gave her a hug. They were a family of huggers. Then Mae watched as her mom left.

Being alone, she dropped onto her back on the bed and let out a sigh. Would she actually get to know Owen again? She didn’t think so. She was better off keeping her distance. If they were meant to be close again, maybe it’d happen on its own. Naturally. If not, then… oh well. She was going off to college in a few months. It’d be the same thing all over again. Maybe it was for the best that they didn’t get close. That way she couldn’t be hurt again.

Later that night, when she was getting ready to turn in for bed, she left her room to go to the bathroom. She found the door cracked open, which she thought was strange, but pushed it open anyways. What she walked in on caused her to shriek.
