Chapter 1
Chapter One — The Man from the Sea
The sea was quiet.
Too quiet.
The last light of evening bled across the horizon, staining the water in shades of copper and crimson. The tide rolled in gentle breaths, as though the ocean itself had finally grown tired of war.
Far beyond the coastline...
Barely visible through the gathering mist...
A military transport vessel drifted across the waves.
Suddenly—
A figure burst onto the rain-slick deck.
A man.
He stumbled forward, one hand clutching the railing as distant voices shouted behind him, their words torn apart by the wind before they could be understood.
A gunshot cracked through the evening.
His body lurched.
For a heartbeat he remained standing.
Then his hand instinctively reached for his back.
Blood seeped between his fingers.
Another command echoed from the ship.
Another shot.
The man didn't hesitate.
He threw himself overboard.
The sea swallowed him without a splash.
As if it had been waiting.
Miles away...
John Baker closed the wooden gate leading to the small coastal cottage.
The salt carried inland on the evening breeze.
For the first time that day...
Everything was quiet.
Before he reached the porch—
Two familiar arms wrapped around him.
"You've been working since sunrise."
Laura rested her chin against his shoulder.
"You promised tonight belonged to us."
A tired smile crossed John's face.
"I know."
"You always know."
"And somehow..."
he chuckled,
"...you always forgive me."
Laura smiled.
"I wouldn't go that far."
For a while...
Neither of them spoke.
They simply watched the waves.
For a precious few moments...
The war felt impossibly distant.
Almost unreal.
Then Laura's smile disappeared.
"...John."
He followed her gaze.
Something moved near the shoreline.
A silhouette.
It staggered from the surf.
One unsteady step.
Then another.
It collapsed.
For several seconds...
Nothing.
Then—
It moved again.
Dragging itself through the wet sand.
One arm.
Then the other.
Each movement slower than the last.
Until finally...
It stopped.
John and Laura exchanged a glance.
Neither needed to speak.
They were already running.
The figure was a man.
His uniform clung to him, soaked with seawater.
Dark blood spread beneath the torn fabric on the right side of his back.
His breathing came in shallow, uneven gasps.
John knelt beside him.
Two fingers searched for a pulse.
Weak.
Dangerously weak.
He carefully rolled the man onto his side.
Laura froze.
Her eyes locked onto the insignia stitched into the ruined uniform.
"...John."
"I saw it."
"He's one of them."
Silence settled between them.
Only the waves answered.
Laura instinctively stepped back.
"We should report this."
John remained kneeling.
"He won't survive that."
"John..."
"Look at him."
She did.
He barely looked alive.
"He's the enemy."
"He's a patient."
Those four words lingered in the air.
Laura looked back toward the empty coastline.
"If someone finds him here..."
John gently applied pressure to the wound.
His voice remained calm.
Measured.
"I'm a doctor."
Another silence.
Then Laura let out a slow breath through her nose.
"You always do this."
John almost smiled.
"My job isn't deciding who deserves to live."
"It's making sure they have the chance."
Laura closed her eyes.
She already knew she'd lost the argument.
"...Then we do this properly."
"No neighbours."
"No lights."
"And if anyone asks..."
John nodded once.
"No one ever came ashore."
Together...
They lifted the unconscious soldier.
His weight sagged between them as they disappeared into the cottage.
Inside...
Soft footsteps echoed down the hallway.
A little girl stood in the doorway.
Messy brown hair.
A blanket dragging behind her.
Still half asleep.
She rubbed one eye.
"Daddy...?"
Without thinking, John stepped between her and the wounded stranger.
"Back to bed, Bramble."
She blinked.
"...Okay."
Still drowsy, she turned toward the hallway.
But just before disappearing into the darkness...
She glanced back.
Only for a second.
Her sleepy eyes rested on the stranger's face.
Then she was gone.
Neither John...
Nor Laura...
Ever realized she had seen him.
