Chapter 1 America's Sweetheart
Chapter 1 – America's Sweetheart
The roar of thousands shook the streets of Los Angeles as camera flashes illuminated the crimson carpet stretching toward the entrance of the historic Avalon Theatre.
"Sera! Over here!"
"Sera! One more picture!"
"Sera, who are you wearing?"
The crowd erupted into deafening cheers the moment Sera McVeigh stepped from the sleek black limousine.
She wore an elegant midnight-blue gown that shimmered beneath the lights like a sky filled with stars. Diamond earrings caught every flash of every camera. Her chestnut hair rested effortlessly over one shoulder, and her confident smile had become one of the most recognizable faces in the world.
America called her America's Sweetheart.
The media called her the highest-paid actress of her generation.
Fans believed she lived a perfect life.
Only Sera knew how exhausting it was pretending to be someone she wasn't.
She smiled gracefully, signed autographs, hugged children waiting behind security barriers, and thanked reporters with practiced ease. Every movement looked effortless.
It was all part of the performance.
Acting had become easier than living.
"Congratulations on another premiere!" one reporter shouted.
"Thank you."
"They're already predicting another billion-dollar box office!"
"I hope audiences enjoy it."
"What comes next?"
Sera smiled.
"A vacation would be nice."
Laughter followed.
No one realized she hadn't taken a real vacation in nearly seven years.
Inside, she was already thinking about lines of code waiting for her back home.
Not scripts.
Software.
Hours later, after the premiere, interviews, photographs, and endless congratulations, Sera finally returned to the quiet hills overlooking the city.
The gates closed behind her.
Silence.
Her heels clicked across polished marble floors until she reached a room hidden behind what appeared to be an ordinary library wall.
The bookshelf slid open after a retinal scan.
Inside was a workspace unlike anything Hollywood could imagine.
Six curved monitors glowed in the darkness.
Custom-built servers hummed quietly.
Encrypted data streamed across enormous displays.
Mechanical keyboards.
Prototype processors.
A room built by an engineer—not an actress.
Sera pulled her hair into a loose ponytail, exchanged her designer gown for comfortable sweatpants and a faded hoodie, and sat before the glowing screens.
The glamorous movie star disappeared.
The real Sera emerged.
Her fingers danced across the keyboard.
Lines of code appeared with impossible speed.
She wasn't simply writing software.
She was building systems capable of detecting deception in digital environments before an attack ever occurred.
No company knew who created these innovations.
Every contract.
Every patent.
Every encrypted submission.
They all came from a single anonymous name.
Cipher.
The greatest software architect in the world didn't exist.
At least...
Not publicly.
Her phone buzzed.
Ignoring it, she continued working.
Minutes later it buzzed again.
Then again.
Finally, she glanced at the screen.
Unknown Number.
No caller ID.
Normally she would delete it.
Something stopped her.
She opened the message.
«Congratulations on another successful premiere.»
She frowned.
Another message arrived.
«The blue dress was a good choice.»
Her eyes narrowed.
Another.
«You should close the curtain behind monitor four.»
Every muscle in her body froze.
Slowly...
Very slowly...
She turned her head.
Monitor four.
Behind it...
A narrow window.
Its curtain was open.
Someone outside could see into the room.
Her heartbeat thundered.
She crossed the room, closed the curtain, and activated every security protocol in the house.
Motion sensors.
Thermal scans.
Perimeter drones.
Nothing.
No movement.
No intruders.
She returned to her desk.
Another message.
«Relax. I'm not outside anymore.»
Cold spread through her veins.
Whoever this was...
They had been watching.
Not guessing.
Watching.
She turned on her phone hub and synced it to her computer.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she attempted to trace the message.
Encrypted.
Military-grade routing.
Multiple satellite relays.
Every digital trail dissolved before reaching its origin.
Whoever sent it knew exactly how to disappear.
For the first time in years...
Someone had outplayed Cipher.
She leaned back in her chair, refusing to panic.
"Who are you?" she whispered.
As if answering her question...
One final message appeared.
This one was different.
Only four words.
"I know who you are."
The screen went black.
Not just the message.
Every monitor in the room.
Every server.
Every backup system.
The lights flickered once.
Twice.
Then the emergency power activated.
Silence filled the room.
Sera stared into the darkness.
For years she had hidden behind the name Cipher.
She had believed no one could ever uncover her identity.
Tonight...
Someone had proven her wrong.
And somewhere beyond the walls of her home, hidden in the shadows of a city that adored America's Sweetheart...
Someone smiled.
Not as much as Sera McVeigh aka Cipher. For her this was a challenge. If someone was out to play with her. The game had begun.
