Chapter 1
THE 13TH FLOOR
Adam was 22 years old, exhausted, and desperate for a cheap place to live near his university. When he found an apartment in an old, gray concrete building for half the usual price, he could not believe his luck. The building was worn down, with peeling paint and an elevator that groaned every time it moved. According to all official documents and the buttons inside the lift, the building had exactly 12 floors. On the day he moved in, the landlord a pale, quiet old man with sharp eyes handed him the keys and offered a single, whispered rule: "If the elevator ever stops after Floor 12 at exactly 3:13 AM, do not get out." Adam laughed it off, assuming it was just a joke to scare a student, but the landlord remained dead serious and simply walked away.
For the first few nights, everything was completely normal. Adam attended his classes, studied late, and slept soundly, completely forgetting the warning. Then came Thursday night. He woke up suddenly to a freezing cold room. Checking his phone, the digital clock read exactly 3:13 AM. Right at that moment, a loud, metallic scraping sound echoed through his walls as the elevator began to move. Driven by sudden curiosity, Adam put on his shoes and walked out into the dimly lit hallway. The elevator doors were already open, almost as if they were waiting for him.
He stepped inside, and though he didn't press any buttons, the doors slid shut anyway. The elevator began to move upward, the digital screen climbing past 1, 5, 10, and 12. Instead of stopping, the elevator let out a loud ding, and the screen changed to a deep, glowing red number: "13".
The doors slowly slid open to reveal a hallway filled with thick, cold air that smelled like old, wet paper. The overhead lights flickered violently, casting long, dancing shadows against walls lined with rusted apartment doors. Heart pounding, Adam stepped out and knocked on the very first door he saw. It creaked open immediately to reveal an old woman with a wide, frozen smile who whispered, "You're early." Terrified, Adam spun around just as the elevator doors began to shut. Panic took over; he sprinted back, threw himself between the closing doors, and slammed the button for Floor 12. The elevator rushed downward, returning him to the safety of normal lights and familiar surroundings, leaving him too terrified to sleep for the rest of the night.
The next day, unable to focus on his studies, Adam dug into the university library's newspaper archives. What he found was horrifying. Over the last 60 years, dozens of people, students, couples, businessmen had vanished from that exact building, all last seen entering it, with no bodies ever found. Unable to stop thinking about it, he felt compelled to go back. That night at 3:13 AM, he took the elevator back up to the secret 13th floor.
Walking deeper into the hallway this time, he knocked on different doors. To his shock, the people who answered were the exact faces from the old newspaper clippings. They hadn't aged a single day and looked completely healthy, but their eyes were blank and empty as they lived out normal lives inside their rusted apartments. When Adam asked a student from a 1980s clipping why they didn't just leave, the man gave a dull, sad smile and replied, "Nobody leaves. We stopped trying years ago."
Driven by growing fear and confusion, Adam walked to the very end of the long hallway and stopped in front of the final door, which read "1313". Beneath the numbers, a small, handwritten nameplate was taped to the wood, bearing his own name: "Adam". His hands shook as he pushed the door open to find an exact copy of his own apartment the same books on the desk, the same clothes on a chair. But sitting on the couch was an older man in his late 40s, ragged and deeply exhausted. Looking closer, Adam realized the man had his exact same eyes, nose, and jawline.
"You shouldn't have come," the older Adam said in a hollow voice. When the younger Adam demanded to know who he was, the older man explained, "I am you. Every few decades, this building chooses one resident. When you enter this floor completely, you unknowingly replace the person before you. I have been trapped in this room for decades, waiting for you to take my place. Only one of us can leave."
"No! This isn't real!" the younger Adam shouted, refusing to believe it. He turned around to run back to the hallway, ignoring the older man's warning not to step further into the room. But it was too late. As panic gripped him and he moved around the apartment, the world shifted. The rusty hallway outside collapsed into pure darkness. The older Adam stood up with a sad, peaceful smile as his hands became see-through, fading away into nothingness, finally free.
A loud ding echoed through the room as the elevator doors at the end of the hall opened wide. But the younger Adam could no longer run. A heavy, invisible weight pulled him down onto the couch, leaving him unable to move or scream utterly trapped.
The next morning, the sun rose, and down on the lower floors, life went on as usual. Nobody looked for Adam. Nobody even remembered his name. His room was completely empty, his clothes were gone, and his lease records had vanished from the landlord's book as if he had never existed.
Months passed. A new, young university student arrived at the building, carrying a heavy backpack. The old landlord smiled politely, handed him a set of keys, and gave him the exact same speech: "There is just one rule here, young man. If the elevator ever reaches Floor 13... don't get out."
High above them on the hidden 13th floor, the lights flickered in the silent hallway. Inside Apartment 1313, Adam sat on the couch, looking older, his face lined with deep exhaustion and his eyes staring blankly at the door. He sat completely still, waiting for the next person to open it.
