Chapter1.The Penthouse

The luxurious condominium tower rose above the heart of the city. Below, colorful neon signs from shops, restaurants, and nightclubs reflected off the building’s glass walls, as though proclaiming a world driven by ambition, competition, and endless chaos. The sounds of music and laughter drifting up from the streets blended into the soundtrack of a neighborhood that never truly slept.

Yet inside the upper floors of the condominium, everything fell silent.

The lights from the surrounding skyscrapers filtered softly through the sheer curtains of the quiet bedroom. Elegantly decorated in a palette of white and muted tones, the room stood in stark contrast to the vibrant world below. The only illumination came from a scented candle, its delicate rose fragrance filling the space with a quiet sense of warmth.

On the large bed, draped in smooth, luxurious sheets, a man leaned over the woman beside him. It was Emily, his wife, her slender figure partially concealed beneath a soft, elegant blanket.

James moved closer, trying to rekindle the connection they once shared. But something inside him remained distant, unreachable. In the quiet room, the only sound was the soft rhythm of their breathing, filling the widening space between them.

“James... are you okay?” Emily asked softly, concern lingering in her voice—an uncertainty she tried hard to hide.

He froze at her question. Then, slowly pulling away, he lay beside her and stared at the ceiling, letting out a heavy sigh.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily pulled the blanket tighter around herself and reached for his hand.

“It’s not a big deal. Maybe we’re just tired... both of us.”

James didn’t answer right away. His eyes remained fixed on the white ceiling above, which suddenly felt like a wall separating him from everything he used to feel.

“I don’t know...” he finally admitted.

Needing a moment alone, James got out of bed. His footsteps echoed softly across the floor as he walked toward the bathroom. Emily watched his silhouette disappear behind the door, her eyes filled with questions she was too afraid to ask.

Inside the bathroom, James stood before the mirror, staring at the reflection of a man he barely recognized. The silence around him only deepened the emptiness in his heart.

Later, when he returned to the bedroom, Emily was already asleep. Her breathing was calm, her expression peaceful, yet he could still sense the lingering sadness she carried even in her sleep. He sat beside her, gently brushed a stray lock of hair away from her face, and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead.

...

Morning sunlight slipped through the curtains, warming Emily’s face. She stirred, reaching across the bed for James, only to find an empty, cold space beside her.

He was gone again. Just like every morning.

A small note rested on the bedside table, written in James’s familiar handwriting:

“Urgent work this morning. I might stay overnight. Take care of yourself.”

Emily let out a quiet sigh. The words had changed, but the meaning was always the same: distance.

Her eyes drifted toward their wedding photograph. Ten years ago, she had stood beside James in a white wedding dress, smiling with a heart full of hope. Back then, he had looked at her as if she were the only person in the world who mattered. Now, that love felt more like a fading memory than something she could still hold on to.

Emily touched the frame gently, remembering the warmth they had once shared. She knew James wasn’t a bad man. He was responsible, hardworking, and devoted to his career. But somewhere along the way, the love that had once filled their days had slowly begun to fade.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm the emotions she could no longer ignore. After placing the photograph back on the table, she walked toward the bathroom. Soon, the sound of running water filled the quiet room. For a moment, Emily allowed herself to forget the loneliness surrounding her, letting the warmth wash away the exhaustion buried deep within her heart.

Ding. Ding.

The chime of notifications from her phone on the glass table broke the silence. Messages from friends flooded in, congratulating her on their wedding anniversary. She glanced at the screen, secretly hoping one of those notifications would be from her husband. But as the names appeared one after another, her heart sank.

James had truly forgotten.

Emily dressed in a long, white strapless gown that flowed gracefully with every movement. The pure fabric complemented her delicate complexion, making her appear almost like a painting that had stepped out of its frame. Her long, silky hair fell freely over her shoulders, soft and effortless, as though stirred by a gentle breeze.

She stood before the full-length mirror, quietly studying her reflection. It was as if she were searching for proof that the calm exterior she showed the world matched the fragile emotions she was desperately trying to keep hidden inside. Satisfied, she picked up a small beige handbag that complemented her dress and stepped out of the apartment.

Her footsteps echoed softly along the quiet condominium hallway. When she opened the main door and stepped onto the bustling city street, a gentle morning breeze carried the rich aroma of coffee from nearby cafés. The laughter and chatter of strangers filled the air, painting a picture of a beautiful world moving effortlessly around her.

Yet, inside, everything felt disconnected. It was as though she were standing in the middle of a beautiful movie scene while carrying a sadness that no one else could see.

She knew her visit to the shop wasn’t just about managing the paintings she had entrusted for sale; it was an escape from the chaos inside her mind. The art studio was the only sanctuary where she could express her emotions through brushes and colors.

Arriving at the shop, Emily paused for a moment before pushing open the door. A soft bell chimed.

The comforting scent of acrylic paint and fresh paper welcomed her. Inside The Brushstroke, the walls were lined with paintings in various styles, each one carefully displayed. Soft lighting spilled across the wooden floor, creating an atmosphere that felt like stepping into another world.

“Good morning, Sarah,” Emily greeted softly.

Sarah looked up and smiled warmly.

“Good morning, Emily. Still the same as always, aren’t you? Walking in so quietly, as if you’re trying not to disturb anyone.”

Emily laughed softly. “This place is peaceful, Sarah.”

She walked past the exhibition area toward the thin white curtain that separated the private workspace at the back. As she stepped through, the fabric swayed gently behind her.

The studio beyond was her sanctuary. A long wooden table stood in the center, cluttered with bottles of paint, brushes, and unfinished sketches. Here, the sounds of the city faded completely, leaving behind only silence and the quiet rhythm of her own breathing.

Emily sat at her usual place in front of the canvas. The painting before her was raw with emotion—bold colors clashing against a clean white background. She picked up her brush, turning it slowly between her fingers, debating where the first stroke should fall.

But instead of painting, she remained still.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the unfinished artwork, searching for answers hidden somewhere within the incomplete lines and strokes. Her thoughts drifted back to the previous night. Her conversation with James still lingered heavily in her heart. Yet, being here made her feel as though she had escaped from that pain, if only for a little while.

Suddenly, the rustle of the white curtain caught her attention.

Emily lifted her gaze from the canvas. Her eyes widened slightly as she caught sight of the man who had just stepped into the studio.
