Chapter 1

The room was silent except for the rhythmic, restless tapping of Scarlett Evans’ fingers against her laptop keyboard.

The digital clock on her bedside table glowed in the dark: 2:17 A.M.

Another sleepless night. Another dead end.

The harsh blue light of the screen illuminated the deep exhaustion etched onto her face. Dozens of browser tabs filled with unsolved crime reports, archived newspapers from a decade ago, leaked police records, and sketchy anonymous forums remained open.

Every single search ended the exact same way.

No photographs. No confirmed address. No verified identity.

For ten long years, she had searched for the man responsible for destroying her life. Ten years... and the ghost called Dante Moretti had left behind nothing but fear in his wake.

No media interviews. No public appearances. No social media. No surveillance footage.

Nothing.

It was as if the devil himself had effortlessly erased every trace of his existence from the world.

Scarlett leaned back in her chair, pressing her palms against her tired, burning eyes before opening one final article.

“The infamous mafia leader Dante Moretti is believed to be responsible for...”

“Believed,” Scarlett scoffed softly under her breath. Always believed. Never proven.

She slammed the laptop shut with a harsh snap.

“Damn you...” she whispered, her voice barely audible in the quiet darkness of her apartment.

Her eyes drifted slowly toward the small framed photograph resting on the edge of her desk. Her father smiled back at her—a warm, gentle smile that time and grief had failed to erase.

She picked up the frame with trembling hands, her thumb tracing the glass over his face.

“Where are you, Dante Moretti?” Her voice cracked, heavy with ten years of unshed tears. “I’ve spent ten years looking for you.”

A single tear escaped her lash line, slipping down her cheek despite her desperate attempt to stay strong. She wiped it away furiously, her jaw setting into a tight, hard line.

“When I find you...” she breathed into the dark. “I’ll make you pay.”

The next morning...

The familiar, warm scent of freshly roasted coffee beans welcomed Scarlett into the bustling Bell & Bean Café.

Some people began their mornings searching for peace. Scarlett began hers searching for blood.

As always, she ordered her usual vanilla latte, thanked the barista with a polite, practiced smile, and settled into her favorite secluded seat by the window. A freshly printed morning newspaper rested beside her steaming cup.

Crime. Politics. Local corruption.

She scanned every headline with sharp, trained eyes, circling specific names in dark ink and making mental notes for the day ahead.

To everyone else sitting in the café, she looked like nothing more than an ordinary, dedicated journalist preparing for her workday.

No one could have guessed that every article she read... Every murder she investigated... Every criminal she exposed...

Was bringing her one step closer to the man she had sworn to destroy.

Dante Moretti.

“Excuse me...”

A deep, masculine voice pulled Scarlett’s attention away from the newspaper held firmly in her hands.

She looked up.

A man stood beside her table. Tall—easily over six feet—with broad shoulders that filled out a tailored charcoal overcoat effortlessly. His dark hair was neatly styled, and a pair of striking green eyes met hers with quiet, unnerving confidence. He was undeniably handsome, the kind of man who turned heads in a crowded room without even trying.

“Is someone sitting here?” he asked, gesturing toward the empty chair across from her.

Scarlett glanced at the vacant seat before looking back at his piercing gaze.

“No.”

A faint smile tugged at his lips as he pulled out the chair and sat down.

For a moment, a loaded silence settled between them, heavy with unspoken curiosity. Scarlett slowly folded her newspaper, setting it down beside her coffee.

“I’ve never seen you here before,” she remarked, her investigative instincts humming quietly under her skin.

“That’s because this is my first time at this café,” he replied. His voice was calm, velvet smooth, and almost effortless.

He extended his hand across the small table. “Myself, Dean.”

Scarlett shook it briefly, noting the firm, commanding grip and the warmth of his skin.

“Oh... that’s nice,” she said, pulling her hand back. “I’m Scarlett Evans.”

A subtle flicker of recognition crossed his handsome face. “I know.”

She raised an eyebrow, her guard instantly rising. “You do?”

“I read your articles every morning,” he said softly, nodding toward the newspaper resting between them. “You’re one of the few journalists left who still has the nerve to write the truth.”

Despite her usual skepticism, Scarlett couldn’t help a faint smile from breaking through her professional wall. “Well... that’s a first.”

“What is?”

“Usually people tell me I ask too many dangerous questions.”

Dean chuckled softly, a low, resonant sound that vibrated through the quiet corner of the café. “Maybe that’s exactly what makes you so good at your job.”

For reasons she couldn’t quite explain or articulate, the conversation felt surprisingly, dangerously easy.

Neither of them noticed the morning sun shifting through the glass... or their coffee slowly growing cold between them.

“So...” Scarlett took another sip of her latte, holding the warm mug between both hands. “What do you do for a living?”

Dean leaned back in his chair, his long fingers absentmindedly stirring his coffee with a silver spoon.

“I’m a bank manager.”

She looked at him with genuine interest, tilting her head slightly. “Really?”

He nodded, a calm, unassuming expression settling over his features. “I was transferred here about two weeks ago.”

“That explains why I’ve never seen you around.”

“I suppose it does.”

A comfortable silence settled between them once again. Scarlett glanced down at her leather-strapped wristwatch.

8:12 A.M.

She let out a soft sigh, resigning herself to reality. “I should get going.”

Dean looked up, his dark brows pulling together slightly. “So soon?”

“My editor will kill me if I’m late again,” she said, gathering her papers.

A faint, intriguing smile appeared on his lips. “Then I certainly won’t be the reason you lose your job.”

Scarlett chuckled softly as she stood up, slipping her leather journal into her bag before placing a few bills on the wooden table.

“It was nice meeting you, Dean.”

“The pleasure was mine, Scarlett.”

She adjusted the strap of her bag over her shoulder and turned toward the café door.

Just as her hand reached the brass handle...

“Scarlett.”

She stopped mid-step.

Turning back around, she found his striking green eyes still locked onto hers.

“Will we meet again?”

For a brief second, neither of them spoke, the ambient noise of the café fading into the background.

A small, mysterious smile curved on Scarlett’s lips. “Who knows?” She shrugged lightly. “Maybe.”

With that, she pushed open the glass door and disappeared into the bustling morning crowd outside.

Dean watched her through the window until her coat vanished into the sea of commuters.

Slowly, the polite smile on his face faded into nothingness.

He picked up his untouched cup of coffee, staring at the dark liquid reflecting the dim lights.

“Interesting,” he murmured to himself, his voice dropping an octave—void of the warmth he had just shown her.

Then, without another word, he stood up, leaving the café behind.

Neither of them knew...

That this simple conversation over a morning coffee had already set the gears of fate in motion, changing both of their lives forever.

Dean stepped out of the café, the crisp morning breeze brushing against his face.

The moment he reached the curb, a sleek, jet-black Rolls-Royce pulled up seamlessly beside him. Before he could even reach for the door, a man in a sharp black suit hurried forward to open it.

“Boss,” Calvin said in a low voice, holding the door wide. “You shouldn’t be walking around out in the open like this without security.”

Dean slipped into the back seat without a word.

“I know.”

Calvin closed the door firmly before taking his seat in the front passenger side. The luxury sedan pulled away from the curb, flanked by two discreet black SUVs as the convoy merged into the morning traffic.

Inside the quiet cabin, Dean loosened the cuff of his shirt and picked up the fresh newspaper lying on the leather seat beside him.

The front page carried a bold, familiar byline: Scarlett Evans.

His green eyes lingering on her printed name, a faint, uncharacteristic smile crossed his lips.

“Scarlett Evans...” he murmured, almost to himself. “Why are you so determined to chase me?”

Calvin glanced at him through the rear-view mirror, a subtle crease in his brow. “Sir... I thought you went into that café to eliminate her.”

Dante looked up from the newspaper, his expression instantly shifting into something unyielding and cold.

“If I wanted her dead...” His voice was deathly calm. “...I wouldn’t have sent you away.”

A heavy silence filled the back of the car.

“I only wanted to see what was so special about the woman who’s been digging into my life for the last ten years,” Dante continued, his tone smooth and dangerous.

He folded the newspaper neatly along its creases and rested it on his lap.

“And now?” Calvin asked cautiously.

Dante turned his head, looking out the tinted window as the city skyline rushed past them.

“Now I’m curious.”

A small, knowing smile slowly spread across Calvin’s face in the mirror. “Careful, Boss.”

Dante didn’t respond.

Calvin chuckled softly under his breath, shaking his head. “It seems even the most feared mafia king can leave his heart behind...” He met Dante’s eyes in the glass. “...in a coffee shop.”

For the first time that morning...

Dante Moretti didn’t deny it.

He simply stared out the dark window, watching the city pass by, and remained silent.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
