Our Quiet Season

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Some love stories begin with grand gestures. Theirs began with a simple Messenger chat about a school assignment. Elowen Reyes dreams of becoming a psychologist. Quiet, compassionate, and happiest with a book in one hand and an iced coffee in the other, she believes that kindness is the greatest thing a person can offer the world. Caelan Valdez dreams of becoming an engineer. Reserved yet dependable, he finds himself drawn to the girl who always seems to be reading by herself, never realizing that one school project would change the course of both their lives. From library afternoons and bookstore dates to birthdays, dreams, and promises whispered beneath quiet skies, they build a love that grows gently—one conversation, one chapter, and one season at a time. But when a global pandemic turns their world upside down, dreams are placed on hold. Financial hardship forces Elowen to leave college and set aside her lifelong goal of becoming a psychologist so her younger siblings can continue their education. Encouraged by her family, she unexpectedly begins a career as a call center agent, discovering a different way to help people while carrying responsibilities far beyond her years. As Caelan pursues his path toward becoming an engineer and Elowen learns to survive the demands of adulthood, their love faces a challenge neither of them expected—not betrayal, not a lack of love, but the quiet distance created by sacrifice, exhaustion, and time. Heartfelt, bittersweet, and deeply human, Our Quiet Season is a coming-of-age romance about first love, family, resilience, and the dreams we refuse to abandon. It is a story that reminds us that not every love is meant to last forever—but every sincere love leaves us wiser, kinder, and forever changed. Because sometimes... The people who don't stay for the rest of our lives... Become the reason we learn how to live them.

PROLOGUE: The Library

There is a library in Aldermere that still smells the same.

Old paper.

Shelves polished by countless hands.

And the quiet comfort of stories waiting to be opened.

Six years have passed.

The librarian has retired.

The wooden chairs have been replaced.

A fresh coat of paint now covers the once-faded walls.

Everything has changed.

And yet...

The silence still feels familiar.

I run my fingers along the spine of a worn novel before carefully sliding it back into its place.

Some places remember us...

Even when the people no longer do.

The thought makes me smile.

The corner beside the window is empty today.

It used to be my favorite seat.

Every afternoon, sunlight would pour through the glass and settle across the old wooden table, warming the pages of whatever book I happened to be reading.

Back then, I believed libraries were magical.

Not just because they were filled with stories...

But because every book promised that somewhere, hidden among its pages, was an ending worth waiting for.

I believed life worked the same way.

I believed that if you were patient enough...

Everything would eventually make sense.

As I pull another novel from the shelf, something slips from between its pages and lands softly on the floor.

A faded library borrowing slip.

Its edges have softened with time.

The ink is no longer as vibrant as it once was.

I bend down and pick it up.

On the back, written in blue handwriting I would recognize anywhere, are words I haven’t read in years.

Some people arrive quietly and somehow become part of your everyday life before you even notice.

My thumb traces the familiar letters.

For a moment...

The library disappears.

The years disappear.

And suddenly...

I’m sixteen again.

Back before life became so complicated.

Back when afternoons were measured by the number of chapters I could finish before sunset.

Back when my biggest concern was choosing which book to borrow first.

Back when I had no idea that the quietest boy in our circle of friends would one day become the person I’d remember most.

Looking back now...

I realize this was never just a story about first love.

It was about growing up.

About finding pieces of yourself in another person.

About dreams that quietly change.

About the people who shape your heart without ever meaning to.

And about the seasons of our lives that stay with us long after they’ve passed.

Some stories begin with a grand entrance.

Ours...

Began with silence.

It all started...

With a boy who rarely spoke.

And a girl who couldn’t stop talking.

Miriam: I liked the way the plot was set up and then the relationship progressed. Some may not like the discretion but it all led up to a very happy ending with a bit of suspense leading up to it. Definitely a cliffhanger. Waiting for a follow-up.
