The Only One Who Listened

                                      Chapter 1

Saturday mornings were supposed to feel peaceful.

At least, that was what Callie Montenegro had always imagined.

The warm sunlight filtered through the curtains of her bedroom, casting a golden glow across the room. Slowly opening her eyes, she stared at the ceiling for a few moments before sitting up. The house seemed unusually lively today. She could hear faint laughter coming from downstairs.

A small smile appeared on her lips.

Maybe today would be different.

Maybe today her parents would finally include her in whatever plans they had.

Maybe they would ask her to come with them instead of leaving her behind again.

Maybe they would look at her the same way they looked at Seraphina.

The thought alone filled her heart with hope.

Quickly fixing her hair, Callie headed downstairs.

The moment she stepped into the living room, she saw her family gathered together.

Alexander sat comfortably on the couch while Isabella and Seraphina excitedly talked about something.

"Oh my God, Mommy! We have to visit that new boutique first!" Seraphina exclaimed excitedly. "I saw their latest collection online and it's absolutely gorgeous!"

Isabella laughed.

"Of course, sweetheart, we can go wherever you want. If you like something, we'll buy it for you."

Alexander nodded in agreement.

"You've been working hard lately. Consider this a reward."

The smile on Callie's face slowly disappeared.

Mall?

They were going shopping?

Nobody had mentioned anything to her.

Still, she remained hopeful.

Surely they simply forgot to tell her.

Surely they would invite her once they noticed she was there.

She stood quietly, waiting.

Seconds passed.

Nobody looked at her, nobody acknowledged her presence.

It felt as if she was invisible.

Finally, Luna cleared her throat.

"Good morning."

All three turned toward her.

For only a second.

"Oh, you're awake," Isabella said before turning back to Seraphina.

That was it.

No smile, no greeting, nothing.

Luna forced herself to remain calm.

"You're going somewhere?"

Seraphina grinned.

"Yeah. We're going shopping today."

Callie nodded slowly.

"I see."

Then she waited, and waited and waited.

The invitation never came.

Nobody asked if she wanted to join.

Nobody even considered it.

The painful realization settled heavily inside her chest.

They weren't forgetting her.

They were choosing not to include her.

"Oh."

That single word was all she could manage.

A few minutes later, they left together.

Callie stood by the doorway as she watched them disappear.

Her mother, her father, her sister.

A perfect family.

Without her, the front door closed.

Silence immediately filled the mansion.

The house suddenly felt larger than usual.

Colder, lonelier.

Callie looked around the empty living room and felt a familiar ache in her chest.

No matter how many years passed, she never got used to this feeling.

The feeling of being unwanted.

Tears threatened to spill from her eyes.

"No."

She quickly wiped them away.

"Not today."

She was tired of crying, tired of feeling sorry for herself.

Grabbing her jacket, she headed for the front door.

Maybe some fresh air would help.

Maybe leaving the house for a while would hurt less than staying inside it.

Duke's POV

Duke Villarreal came to the park whenever he wanted peace.

As the CEO of one of the country's largest corporations, his life was constantly surrounded by noise.

Meetings, reporters business partners and endless responsibilities.

The park was one of the few places where nobody bothered him.

Seated beneath a large tree, Duke reviewed business documents on his tablet while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

Matt had already called him several times.

He ignored every call.

Today was supposed to be his day off.

Unfortunately, his attention was soon stolen by someone unexpected.

A young woman entered the park.

She walked slowly, her shoulders slightly slumped as if carrying an invisible burden.

Duke wasn't the type to stare.

Yet something about her made him look twice.

She was beautiful.

But that wasn't what caught his attention.

It was the sadness in her eyes.

The kind of sadness that couldn't be hidden.

The kind that came from years of hurt.

Duke watched as she stopped near a bench occupied by a small stray cat.

Immediately, her entire expression changed.

"Oh my God."

Her eyes brightened.

"Aren't you the cutest thing I've ever seen?"

The cat blinked.

Duke nearly smiled.

It was the first genuine smile he had seen on her face.

The girl carefully approached the animal and crouched beside it.

"Hello there, little one."

The cat meowed.

Her smile widened.

"Oh, you're talking to me? That's already more communication than I've received from my family today."

Duke lowered his tablet slightly.

Curious.

Very curious.

Duke's POV

The cat's fur felt incredibly soft beneath her fingers.

Callie couldn't help smiling.

"You know, I think you're the first living creature that's genuinely happy to see me today."

The cat meowed.

"Exactly."

She laughed softly.

"If I had enough money, I'd take you home with me. We'd become best friends. I'd buy you food, toys, and one of those fancy little cat beds."

The cat rubbed against her hand.

Her smile slowly faded.

"Actually... maybe that's not a good idea."

The cat looked up at her.

"They probably wouldn't want you there."

Callie stared at the ground.

"Then again, they don't really want me there either."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

For some reason, talking to the cat felt easier than talking to people.

The cat wasn't judging her.

The cat wasn't comparing her to Seraphina.

The cat wasn't ignoring her existence.

So she continued talking.

About everything, her dreams, her fears, her loneliness.

"You know what hurts the most?" she whispered. "It's not that they love Seraphina more. It's that no matter how hard I try, they never look at me the same way."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"I study hard."

She laughed bitterly.

"I do everything they ask. I try to be a good daughter. I try so hard to make them proud."

The cat quietly listened.

"But somehow, it's never enough."

Her voice trembled.

"When Seraphina succeeds, they celebrate. When I succeed, they barely notice."

She looked at the cat with watery eyes.

"Tell me honestly. Am I really that hard to love?"

The cat meowed.

Callie laughed despite her tears.

"Thank you for pretending to answer."

Hours passed.

Yet she continued talking.

And throughout those hours, she never noticed the man sitting several benches away.

Listening, watching.

Remembering every word.

Duke's POV

Duke had completely forgotten about the documents on his tablet.

The girl fascinated him.

Not because she was beautiful, not because she came from wealth, not because she was trying to attract attention.

But because she was painfully real.

Everything she said came straight from the heart.

No lies, no pretending, no mask.

For someone like Duke, who spent most of his life surrounded by fake smiles and hidden intentions, it was strangely refreshing.

When she admitted that she sometimes wondered if she was truly her parents' daughter, something inside him tightened.

Nobody should sound that broken.

Nobody should question whether they were loved by their own family.

Yet she said it so casually.

As if she'd been carrying that pain for years.

Duke slowly closed his tablet and leaned back against the bench.

For the first time in years, he found himself genuinely interested in someone's story.

He didn't know her name.

He didn't know where she came from.

But he wanted to know.

And as he watched her smile sadly while petting the stray cat, Duke Villarreal unknowingly took the first step toward changing both of their lives.

Little did Callie know...

The stranger silently listening from a distance would soon become one of the most important people in her life.

And little did Duke know...

The lonely girl talking to a stray cat would become the one person he would never be able to ignore.

Callie's POV

The afternoon breeze gently brushed against Luna's face as she sat on the wooden bench beneath the shade of a large tree. For the first time in what felt like forever, she wasn't surrounded by cold stares, disappointed looks, or the painful feeling of being unwanted.

It was peaceful.

Just her.

And the small stray cat resting beside her.

Callie smiled softly as she gently scratched the cat's head.

"You know, you're actually very lucky," she said, watching the cat close its eyes in contentment. "You don't have to worry about disappointing anyone. Nobody expects anything from you. Nobody compares you to someone else every single day."

The cat responded with a small meow.

Callie chuckled.

"At least you're listening. Honestly, you're probably the best listener I've ever met."

The cat rubbed against her hand.

Her smile slowly faded.

"I wish I could take you home with me," she admitted quietly. "But then again... maybe I shouldn't."

She looked toward the sky.

"They probably wouldn't want you there."

The cat tilted its head.

Callie laughed sadly.

"Actually, they barely want me there."

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

For a moment, silence settled between them.

The cat simply stared at her.

And somehow, that was enough to encourage her to continue.

"You know what? no matter how obedient I am... they never look at me the same way they look at her."

Her voice trembled, she swallowed hard.

"But when it's me..."

Luna looked down at her hands.

"It's like I'm invisible."

A tear escaped her eye.

She quickly wiped it away.

"I sound pathetic, don't I?"

The cat meowed.

Callie  laughed.

"Thank you for lying."

Hours passed.

The sun slowly began descending.

Yet Callie continued talking.

About her dreams.

About wanting to travel.

About wanting to experience what it felt like to belong somewhere.

And throughout it all, she never noticed the man seated several benches away.

Listening, watching.

Remembering every word.

Duke's POV

Duke Villarreal had intended to leave nearly two hours ago.

Instead, he found himself sitting there like an idiot.

Listening.

Every time he told himself to stand up and leave, Callie would say something that made him stay.

He couldn't understand it.

He had sat through business conferences worth millions without paying this much attention.

Yet here he was.

Completely focused on a girl talking to a cat.

What fascinated him wasn't her appearance.

Although she was undeniably beautiful.

It was her honesty.

The way she spoke without pretending.

Without trying to impress anyone.

Without hiding her pain.

Most people wore masks.

She didn't.

And somehow that made her stand out.

Duke looked away briefly.

Yet his attention immediately returned to her.

The loneliness in her voice was impossible to ignore.

Especially when she smiled while clearly hurting inside.

Then suddenly...

RING!....RING!... RING!...

The sound of a phone interrupted the peaceful atmosphere.

Duke watched as Callie checked the caller ID.

The brightness on her face instantly disappeared.

The change was immediate.

And noticeable.

She answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Callie, where exactly are you right now?"

The voice on the other line sounded irritated.

Callie sighed softly.

"I'm at the park. I just wanted to get some fresh air and clear my head for a while."

"A park? Are you serious?"

Seraphina sounded increasingly annoyed.

"Do you have any idea how worried everyone is right now?"

Callie frowned.

"Worried? Nobody even knew I left."

"That's not the point."

"Then what is the point?"

For the first time, Duke heard frustration in Callie's voice.

"I spent the entire morning alone in that house. Nobody invited me anywhere, especially you guys. Nobody even talked to me. I simply wanted some space."

Seraphina clicked her tongue.

"Can you stop being dramatic for once? Mommy and Daddy want you home."

Callie closed her eyes.

"I wasn't trying to cause trouble."

"Then stop acting like this and come home immediately."

The call ended.

Callie stared at the screen for several seconds.

Her expression broke Duke's heart more than her tears earlier.

Because this time...

She looked disappointed.

Not surprised.

As if she had expected this.

As if she was already used to it.

And somehow...

That was worse.

Callie's POV

By the time Callie reached the Montenegro mansion, anxiety had already settled in her chest.

The house looked exactly the same.

Yet something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

The moment she stepped inside, the atmosphere changed.

Silence, heavy silence.

Alexander Montenegro sat in the living room.

Isabella stood beside him.

Seraphina remained nearby.

All three staring directly at her.

Callie immediately felt her stomach drop.

"Dad..." she said carefully. "Mom... I'm home."

Nobody responded.

Her heartbeat accelerated.

"I was only at the park. I wasn't doing anything dangerous. I just wanted some time to—"

SLAP!!

The force of the slap caught her completely off guard.

Pain exploded across her cheek.

For a moment, she couldn't process what happened.

Her ears rang.

Her vision blurred.

Slowly, she raised a trembling hand toward her face.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

"D-Dad..."

Alexander rose from his seat.

His expression was colder than she had ever seen.

"Who gave you permission to leave this house?"

Callie stared at him.

"I wasn't trying to disobey anyone."

"Then what exactly were you doing?"

His voice echoed throughout the mansion.

"You left without informing us. You disappeared for hours. Then you expect us to simply accept that?"

Callie felt tears gathering.

"I only went to the park because I couldn't breathe inside this house anymore."

The words slipped out.

The room froze.

Even Callie realized what she had just said.

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"What did you say?"

Callie lowered her gaze.

"I didn't mean it like that..."

"No. Explain yourself."

Her hands shook.

For years she had kept everything inside.

Yet now it threatened to spill out.

"I just wanted one day where I didn't feel invisible."

Silence.

Painful silence.

But instead of understanding...

Isabella scoffed.

"You're being ridiculous."

Callie looked toward her mother.

Her chest tightened.

"Mom..."

"You always make yourself the victim."

The words felt like knives.

"We spend our lives providing everything you need and somehow that's still not enough."

Callie couldn't believe what she was hearing.

All she wanted was love.

Not money, not gifts, not luxury.

Love.

But somehow they never understood that.

Alexander pointed upstairs.

"I'm done discussing this. Go to your room."

Callie stood there.

Broken, exhausted, defeated.

"...Yes, Dad."

She slowly turned around and walked away.

Not because she agreed.

Not because they were right.

But because she knew nobody would listen anyway.

And upstairs, behind the safety of her locked bedroom door, Callie finally allowed herself to cry.

Because sometimes the deepest wounds aren't caused by strangers.

They're caused by the people you're supposed to call family.

Duke's POV

The image of the girl from the park followed Duke Villarreal long after he left.

Even while sitting inside his luxury penthouse overlooking the city's glittering skyline, his mind refused to focus on the unfinished reports scattered across his desk. Every time he attempted to read a document, his thoughts drifted back to the same person.

The girl who spent hours talking to a stray cat.

The girl whose smile seemed genuine whenever she petted the animal, yet whose eyes carried a loneliness that couldn't be hidden no matter how much she tried to laugh.

Duke had met thousands of people throughout his life. Business partners, investors, politicians, celebrities, and socialites constantly surrounded him. Most people who approached him wanted something from him. Money. Power. Influence.

Yet that girl wanted none of those things.

She didn't even know he existed.

And somehow, that intrigued him.

The memory of her voice echoed in his mind.

"Sometimes I wonder if I'm really their daughter."

Those words had not sounded like the complaints of a spoiled rich girl.

They sounded like the desperate confession of someone who had been hurting for a very long time.

Duke leaned back in his chair and stared at the dark ceiling.

For years, he had trained himself not to care about things that did not concern him. It made business easier. Emotions complicated decisions.

But for the first time in a long while, curiosity got the better of him.

Without hesitation, he grabbed his phone and dialed a familiar number.

The call connected after the second ring.

"Good evening, sir."

Matt Reyes.

His most trusted assistant.

"Matt," Duke said calmly.

"Yes, sir?"

"I need you to find someone."

The silence that followed was unusual.

Matt rarely questioned his orders, but this time Duke could practically hear the confusion through the phone.

"Find someone?"

"Yes."

Matt cleared his throat.

"May I know who?"

Duke looked out the window.

His reflection stared back at him.

"A woman."

Another pause.

"Name?"

"I don't know."

Matt was silent.

"Age?"

"I don't know."

"Address?"

"I don't know."

At this point, Matt was convinced his boss had lost his mind.

"Sir... with all due respect, how exactly am I supposed to find someone when you don't know anything about her?"

Duke remained unfazed.

"I saw her at the park."

Matt pinched the bridge of his nose.

Of all the years he had worked under Duke Villarreal, this was undoubtedly the strangest assignment he had ever received.

"You want me to track down a woman based solely on the fact that she was sitting in a park?"

"Correct."

Matt let out a defeated sigh.

"Anything else?"

Duke thought for a moment.

"Long black hair. Around her early twenties. She spent three hours talking to a cat."

Matt blinked.

"A cat?"

"Yes."

The assistant stared at his phone as if it had personally offended him.

For a second, he considered whether this was some elaborate joke.

Unfortunately, Duke Villarreal never joked.

"I'll do my best, sir."

"You always do."

The call ended.

Duke placed the phone on the table and closed his eyes.

For some reason, he felt that finding her wasn't a mistake.

It felt like the beginning of something.

Something he couldn't quite explain.

Callie's POV

The sting on Callie's cheek remained long after she locked herself inside her room.

She sat quietly on the floor beside her bed, hugging her knees against her chest while tears continuously slipped down her face.

The mansion outside her room was alive with laughter.

Seraphina was probably showing their parents everything she bought at the mall.

Alexander and Isabella were most likely praising her as they always did.

Meanwhile, Callie remained alone.

As always.

A bitter laugh escaped her lips.

It was almost funny.

She had only gone outside to breathe.

Only gone to the park because staying inside the house felt suffocating.

Yet somehow, she was the one being punished.

The one being blamed.

The one receiving a slap.

Slowly, Callie raised her hand and touched her swollen cheek.

The pain wasn't what hurt the most.

What hurt was the realization that her father never once asked if she was okay.

Not once.

Instead of concern, she received anger.

Instead of love, she received disappointment.

And perhaps that was what finally broke her.

The hope she had been holding onto for years slowly began to disappear.

Maybe she would never be enough.

Maybe no matter how hard she tried, her family would always choose Seraphina over her.

The thought brought fresh tears to her eyes.

But despite everything, she wiped them away.

Because if there was one thing life had taught her, it was that nobody would come to save her.

She had to survive on her own

What Callie didn't know was that somewhere in the city, someone had already started looking for her.

Duke's POV

Three days later, Matt entered Duke's office carrying a thick folder.

The exhaustion on his face immediately told Duke that the investigation had not been simple.

Without saying a word, Matt placed the folder on the desk.

"I found her."

Duke looked up.

For the first time in days, genuine interest flashed across his eyes.

Matt opened the folder.

"Her name is Callie Montenegro."

The moment he heard her name, Duke felt a strange sense of satisfaction.

Callie.

It suited her.

Matt continued explaining everything he had discovered.

Her age.

Her education.

Her family background.

Her social status.

Her daily routine.

And the more Duke listened, the more his expression darkened.

When Matt finally reached the section regarding her family, the room became noticeably colder.

"According to multiple sources," Matt began carefully, "Callie Montenegro is often treated differently compared to her younger sister."

Duke remained silent.

Matt handed him several photographs collected from family events and social gatherings.

At first glance, everything appeared normal.

A wealthy family smiling for cameras.

The perfect image.

The perfect reputation.

The perfect life.

But once Duke looked closer, he noticed something disturbing.

In every picture, Seraphina stood at the center.

Always beside Alexander and Isabella.

Always receiving their attention.

Always smiling.

Callie, however, seemed almost invisible.

Standing at the side.

Forgotten, ignored.

Like she didn't belong.

Duke slowly flipped through each photograph.

The sadness he witnessed at the park suddenly made perfect sense.

The loneliness.

The heartbreak.

The pain hidden behind every smile.

It was all real.

Matt observed his boss carefully.

"Should I stop monitoring her?"

Duke closed the folder.

His gaze settled on Callie's photograph.

A photograph where she was smiling despite being completely alone.

"No."

Matt already expected that answer.

"Keep me informed."

The assistant nodded.

And in that moment, Duke Villarreal unknowingly took the first step toward becoming part of Callie Montenegro's life.

Neither of them realized it yet.

But fate had already begun weaving their paths together.
