belonging

the police station was as always loud.

phones ringing, chairs scraping against the floor, officers arguing over paperwork, someone laughing too loudly at a joke that wasn't particularly funny.

yet somehow, in the middle of all that noise, an officer felt alone. not lonely, alone.

there was a difference; loneliness was wanting company.

being alone was standing in a crowded room and feeling as though nobody could truly see you.

senior inspector Emad Butt.

he had become an expert at that feeling. years of service had taught him how to wear confidence like armor. people saw the sharp mind, the authority, the unwavering composure. they saw the officer who solved cases, protected his team, and rarely let emotions interfere with duty.

what they didn't see were the empty evenings, the apartment that felt too quiet, the meals eaten in silence, the birthdays he had stopped celebrating because there was no one waiting to celebrate them with him.

he had colleagues, a few friends, people who respected him, but respect wasn't the same thing as belonging.

sometimes, when the station became quieter late at night, he would watch his teammates talking about their families.

parents waiting at home, siblings sending messages, children drawing pictures.

someone always had a place to return to, someone always had people who considered them theirs.

but, Emad never said anything.. he simply listened. then he would go back to his desk. and work. work was easier than acknowledging the emptiness, much easier.

· · ─ · ·· · ─ · ·

Ekra Baig was different.

she entered every room like sunlight, not because she was loud or she demanded attention, but because she carried warmth wherever she went.

people naturally gravitated toward her, victims trusted her, children smiled at her, even the most stubborn witnesses eventually found themselves talking to her.

there was something comforting about her presence, something safe.

the station changed after she joined — conversations became lighter than usual, laughter became more frequent, birthdays were suddenly remembered, coffee breaks became longer because people actually enjoyed sitting together.

and somehow, without intending to, she became the center of it all, the glue holding everyone together.

including him, Emad.

although neither of them would admit it.

· · ─ · ·· · ─ · ·

one evening, a heavy storm trapped everyone inside the station. rain hammered against the windows. thunder rolled across the sky. most officers had already left. only a few remained behind to finish reports.

Ekra sat across from Emad, flipping through a case file.

after a while, she looked up.

"sir.."

"hm?"

"why don't you ever go home early?"

he didn't look away from his report, "because i have work."

she closed the file, "but you finished that report twenty minutes ago?"

his eyes fixed on the report, "i have more work."

"you've been staring at the same page for ten minutes." she folded her arms.

his pen stopped moving.

she smiled slightly seeing him aught.

for a moment, neither spoke.

rain continued hitting the glass.

then she asked, "do you like being alone?"

the question surprised him, because nobody asked things like that, people asked about cases, deadlines, investigations. nobody asked about loneliness.

he leaned back in his chair, "sometimes..."

she waited for truth as the answer felt incomplete.

eventually, he sighed, "no..."

the word came out softer. it was honest, painfully honest.

she didn't respond immediately, she simply listened, and somehow that made it easier to continue.

"you know what's strange?" he said.

she didn't interrupt.

"you get used to it." he sighs.

"being alone?" her voice broke.

he nodded, and smiled faintly, "you wake up alone, you eat alone, you come home to an empty apartment, you tell yourself it doesn't bother you.."

his eyes remained fixed on the rain outside, "then one day you see people who have someone waiting for them."

his voice grew quieter, "and suddenly it does bother you.. without you even realising that."

something twisted inside her chest because she had never heard anyone speak like this before. especially a person like him. the confident officer everyone relied on, the man who always seemed unshakable, sounded tired, not physically but emotionally.

this tiredness accumulated over years.

"you know what i think?" she asked softly, "i think everyone wants to belong somewhere"

his gaze shifted toward her.

she continued.

"not to any place, to people. everyone wants to know that if they disappear for a day.. someone will notice,

if they're hurting.. someone will ask why, if they succeed.. someone will celebrate, if they fail.. someone will stay."

her smile was small, "but people pretend they don't need that."

he stared at her. because she had somehow described something he had never managed to put into words; the yearning, the ache, the desire to matter for not because of achievements or titles, just because you were you.

"do you ever feel that way?" he asked.

her smile faded immediately. for the first time, he saw sadness appeared in her eyes.

"all the time.." she smiled faintly.

her answer shocked him.

she?

the woman everyone adored?

the person surrounded by people?

how? why would she be feeling like that?

she laughed quietly, "i know what you're thinking"

he tried to read her eyes, "then explain"

she looked toward the rain, "being loved by many people isn't the same as feeling understood"

his expression softened.

she continued, "everyone sees the cheerful version of me, the capable officer, the person who always smiles.. but there are days when i go home exhausted. there are days when i want someone to notice that i'm struggling without me having to say it"

she swallowed, "there are days when i wish someone would ask how i am and actually mean it..."

neither spoke for a moment, because both had accidentally revealed pieces of themselves they usually kept hidden.

the storm continued outside. but something had shifted inside the room, something not visible yet undeniable.

the distance between them had become smaller emotionally.

· · ─ · ·· · ─ · ·

weeks passed.

then months.

neither discussed that conversation again, yet it remained between them like a thread connecting two people who finally understood each other.

gradually, habits formed, small things, insignificant things, things that somehow became important.

he began saving her favorite tea, she started bringing extra lunch because she knew he often skipped meals.

he reminded her to rest.

she reminded him to smile.

he waited until she reached home safely after late shifts.

she scolded him whenever he worked through weekends.

neither noticed when concern became care.

or when care became something deeper.

· · ─ · ·· · ─ · ·

one winter night, they finished an operation shortly before midnight.

everyone else left.

only the two of them remained outside the station.

the city felt unusually quiet. streetlights painted golden pools across empty roads. cold air brushed against their faces.

Ekra looked up at the sky, "Emad..?"

"hm?"

"do you ever think about where you're supposed to belong?"

the question lingered.

He considered it carefully.

years ago, the answer would've been simple. now it wasn't. because belonging no longer felt like a distant dream.

not when she was standing beside him,

not when his worst days felt lighter because she existed,

not when his first instinct after good news was telling her,

not when silence felt comfortable as long as she shared it.

He looked at her. really looked at her.

the woman who had unknowingly become home.

"yeah" he said quietly, his eyes fixed on her.

"and?"

a smile appeared on his face. a genuine, real one.

"i think i spent years looking for a place.." his voice was calm and steady, "but maybe belonging was never about places."

she slowly turned toward him.

his gaze never left hers.

"maybe it was always about finding the right person."

her breath caught.

the world suddenly felt very still. for years, both of them had carried the same yearning, the same silent wish — to matter, to be chosen, to have someone who looked at them and thought: there you are.. i've been looking for you.

tears gathered in her eyes before she could stop them.

"Emad..." her voice trembled.

he smiled gently, it reserved only for her.

"you know what the funny thing is? i stopped feeling alone a long time ago.."

she blinked, "when?"

his answer came immediately, "the day you sat across from me during that storm..."

a tear slipped down her cheek.

He reached out instinctively, carefully.

as though she were something precious.

his thumb brushed away the tear.

for years, both of them had searched for belonging. through work, through responsibilities, through endless days and sleepless nights.

yet they had found it in the most unexpected place..

each other.

not because either of them completed the other but because they understood each other.

the loneliness,

the exhaustion,

the hidden fears,

the unspoken hopes,

everything...

and perhaps that was what belonging truly meant.

not finding someone perfect,

not finding someone who fixed every wound.

but finding someone who looked at all your broken pieces and quietly said— “you don't have to carry everything alone anymore.”

· · ─ · ·· · ─ · ·

the city continued moving around them. cars passed. wind whispered through empty streets. somewhere in the distance, life carried on.

but neither noticed. because after years of yearning for a place in the world… they had finally found where they belonged.

and for the first time..

they felt home ♡♡
