Chapter 1
Every step was a struggle, his head spinning from the pain and loss of blood. He had no idea how he had ended up in these foul depths, but all he knew was that he needed to find a way out before it was too late. The young Dragonnoid had sworn to himself he would never go into the city, so why was he wandering lost in its foul bowels?
The stench of decay and filth were not the same as the idyllic scents and noises that were once found in his forests. A crackle of lightning surrounded his hand, lighting up the tunnels as he wandered deeper into the labyrinth of connecting tunnels.
As the guard's panicked footsteps echoed through the grimy tunnels, his heart pounded in his chest like a drumbeat of terror as he fled for his life. Suddenly, he stumbled upon another, likely a lost soul. He didn't care who or why they were here.
"Run! Get out! It's coming!" he gasped, his voice a desperate, horrified plea.
But before the lost person could react, tendrils of translucent pink shot out from the shadows, ensnaring the guard in their sticky grasp. With a strangled cry, he was yanked back, his body writhing against the unseen force that bound him.
Emerging from the darkness, Nickledumb revealed her grotesque form — a monstrous amalgamation of insects, arachnids, and humanoid features. Her thick spider-like torso writhed with unnatural movements, while her harlequin doll-like head was adorned with garish red-pink stripes and a frill-like collar that fluttered with every movement she made.
Her eight long, spindly legs clicked ominously as she advanced, while her two powerful fowl-like feet with web-like claws scraped against the damp stone floor. With a sinister hiss, her head split apart, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth dripping with a sickly sweet substance. With a cruel twist of her monstrous form, she dragged the guard closer, her cotton candy-like webs wrapping around him like a suffocating shroud. The guard's horrified expression was frozen in time as Nickledumb devoured his head, her harlequin doll-like face contorting with glee.
As she finished her grisly meal, Nickledumb turned her attention towards the young Dragonnoid, her multifaceted red eyes gleaming with hunger. The tendrils of translucent pink lingered in the air, twitching with anticipation as she assessed her next prey. With slow, calculated movements, she advanced towards him, the sickly sweet scent of her presence hanging thick in the air.
With a low, guttural hiss, Nickledumb's harlequin doll-like head split apart once more, revealing her razor-sharp teeth dripping with remnants of her previous meal. The dragon was unsure whether to fight or flee. Lightning crackled around his scaled skin as blood dripped from his form. He took a few steps backwards, then a few more, as if on autopilot.
What the hell was that? Why was he even in the sewers? That human probably had it coming, but he had never seen an animal like this before. Did humanity create such a creature? It seemed too perfectly frightening to be an accident. It was so much easier to be brave if he were someone else, like his father. No, he just had to keep running. Perhaps he could find an exit soon, but he certainly didn't want this thing following him out of the sewers and back to the forest.
With a sickening squelch, Nickledumb's head snapped back, flesh knitting back together flawlessly. A guttural growl escaped her twisted lips as the dragonoid cursed and turned tail, attempting to flee.
Suddenly, her mouth opened not wide but lengthwise, emitting a wrenching sound before spewing forth a vile, thick gas-like substance. The gas surged through the tunnel, filling it with its cloyingly sweet yet rancid presence.
As the gas enveloped the surroundings, its effects took hold immediately. Those unfortunate enough to breathe it in began to experience hallucinations — minor at first, then increasingly horrifying as their minds replaced reality with paranoid delusions.
As Nickledumb attempted to pursue her prey, the tunnels proved too small for her current form. There was a visceral ripping sound from within as her body convulsed violently.
Her body contorted, twisted, and cracked as it elongated into a large, millipede-like form close to the ground. Millions of independently wriggling legs lined her body, propelling her forward with unsettling efficiency.
Above this insectoid frame was the top half of a pale humanoid, its ghastly face with a manic grin resembling something from a nightmare. Its unnaturally long arms extended outward, ending in claw-like fingers that twitched in anticipation.
In a sing-song voice, it crooned as it chased after the dragonoid down the tunnel: "I'm your biggest fan, can't you see? I'll chase you down, you won't break free. Your flesh, I crave, it's true, No other meal will ever do. I can't promise I'll be kind, But I won't rest until you're mine. You'll be scrumptious, just wait and see, I'll chase you down until you're consumed, consumed by me."
The lightning-based dragon felt helpless without the open sky. He threw arcs of lightning down the tunnels, not aiming to hit or anger the creature but to deter the chase as much as he could. He rounded another bend, seeing a ladder up to a manhole — his way out, or a trick of the mind. No matter, he had to take the chance. His blood trailed around the corner. He wasn't hard to track.
A dragon? Running from whatever this is. They would all be ashamed of him. Nickledumb grew agitated as she encountered the lightning bolts hindering her pursuit. Slowed but undeterred, she pushed forward to catch up to her prey.
As she navigated the tunnels, her double set of eyes locked onto the dragon's fresh blood trail, guiding her closer. Emerging into view, she fixed her demented gaze on the dragon. With each step, her humanoid torso stretched upward, her mouth opening to unleash a grotesque appendage — a wet, fleshy tongue snaking toward the dragon's legs, aiming to ensnare him.
"Stay back, vile tongued beast!" the dragon shouted as he climbed the ladder, oblivious to the tongue reaching for his leg. With a rush of adrenaline, he generated another spark of lightning toward Nickledumb. Fear and inexperience led to a failed bolt buzzing spectacularly down the tunnel walls.
"It's a warning bolt, stay away," he managed to yell, crude in his fear. Inhaling the rancid yet sweet gas, his vision blurred, feeling truly prey-like. He had to go up, and up, and up.
Undeterred by the failed lightning bolts, Nickledumb pressed on in pursuit. Frustrated, she seized a section of her nearly six-foot-long tongue and ruthlessly severed it, howling wet and syrupy as it fell. Her damaged tongue oozed a sickly sweet aroma as it began to heal.
Without pause, Nickledumb pushed past her severed tongue, grasping the ladder's handle and starting her ascent. Suddenly, a radiant light illuminated the ladder, propelling her back to the tunnel ground with an awful scream. The dragon had unwittingly triggered an ancient protective ward with his lightning bolts.
"Ascending high, you think you're free, but your sanity will remain in the sewers with me!" it crooned in bitter anger up at the fleeing dragon.
The dragon scurried to the surface, running for the woodlands like never before. Sugar, bugs, syrup, liquid — nothing would ever be the same, especially the spiders. He would strike each one down with righteous indignation. What was that? What were these things going around his head? The image of the thrashing tongue played in his mind, feeling it ripple against his skin — his true form's scales. He felt tainted, changed.
Marked.
