Chapter 1: The chains that remember
The blood of my enemies was still drying on the tips of my boots when the double doors of the throne room groaned open.
The sound of iron dragging across marble echoed through the vast chamber, sharp and deliberate, shattering a silence that had only existed in my dreams for years. Two guards shoved him forward, forcing him to his knees at the base of my throne.
Prince Darius.
The man who had taught me the meaning of despair. The man who had bound my wrists with black silk and shattered my pride in the highest tower of his palace. The man whose face had haunted my nightmares for so long that I had lost count of the nights I woke up screaming like my skin still burning from phantom touches.
And now, he was the one in chains.
I leaned back against the cold gold of my throne, forcing my expression to remain blank. No smile. No mercy. I had waited seven years for this moment. I had dreamed of watching him break, of seeing him bow his head and beg for forgiveness.
But when he lifted his face, my breath caught in my throat.
His dark eyes didn't look at me with fear. He looked at me... like I was a dessert he'd been waiting days to devour. His swollen, bleeding lips slowly curved into a smirk I knew too well. A smirk that had always appeared right before he did unspeakable things to me.
He licked the blood from the corner of his mouth, ignoring the swords pointed at his throat.
"You're wearing my red cloak, darling," his voice was rough, echoing through the vast throne room. His tone was casual, as if he wasn't chained like a dog. "But we both know... you look far more beautiful naked, trembling, and screaming my name in my bed."
Silence.
The guards held their breath. Prince Elian, standing beside my throne, immediately drew his sword, his face dark with rage, ready to cut Darius's head off right there.
But I raised my hand, stopping Elian.
My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. Shut up. Please, shut up, my mind panicked. Don't listen to him. He's just trying to provoke you.
I leaned forward, staring straight into the eyes of the man who had once been my nightmare. "Your mouth is too filthy for a prisoner, Darius," I hissed, my voice cold as ice, even as my nails dug painfully into my palms. "One more word, and I'll cut out your insolent tongue and feed it to my hounds."
Darius laughed.
A low, rumbling laugh that used to make my knees weak. And damn it... damn it a thousand times over... as his voice filled my ears, a shameful heat immediately seeped between my thighs.
My body betrayed me. And he knew it.
"Cut it out, Your Majesty," he whispered, his eyes tracing the curve of my neck with a naked, hungry gaze. "But I promise, when you kiss me later... you'll miss my tongue somewhere else."
Elian's jaw tightened, his knuckles white around the hilt of his sword. "Your Majesty," he said, his voice strained but controlled, "allow me to end this. His words are not fit for your ears."
I glanced at Elian. His golden hair caught the torchlight, his blue eyes filled with pain and protectiveness. He was beautiful in a way that didn't hurt to look at. All soft where Darius was sharp, Elian was gentle where Darius was cruel. He had loved me from afar for years, had watched me suffer in Darius's tower and done nothing because he'd been too afraid to cross his own brother.
And now, he had volunteered to take chains too. Just to stay by my side. Just to protect me from the monster I was becoming.
"No," I said, my voice steady. "Let him speak. Let him dig his own grave with his filthy words."
Darius's smirk widened. "Oh, I'm not done yet, darling. You see, your loyal little Elian here—" he nodded at the prince beside me, "—he kisses your feet like a pathetic dog. But do you remember the night before your city fell? I didn't kiss your feet. I made you bite the pillow while you screamed so loud your voice gave out. Which did you prefer, hmm? Being worshipped like a doll, or being conquered like a woman?"
My vision went red.
I stood up so fast my throne scraped against the stone floor. I descended the steps, my boots clicking sharply with each movement, until I stood directly in front of him.
I grabbed the chain around his neck and yanked it hard, forcing him to look up at me. His skin was warm under my fingers, his pulse steady despite the situation. He wasn't afraid. He was enjoying this.
Fucking bastard.
"You think these chains change anything?" I spat, my face inches from his. "You think I've forgotten what you did to me? Every night in that tower, every time you—" my voice broke, and I hated myself for it. I swallowed hard, forcing the words out. "Every time you touched me, I wanted to die. And now, I want you to die."
Darius's eyes darkened, but his smirk never faded. "Liar," he breathed, so softly only I could hear. "Your pupils are dilated. Your breath is quickening. I can smell the arousal on you, Sylvia. Your body remembers what your mind is trying to forget."
I slapped him.
The sound echoed through the throne room like a gunshot. His head snapped to the side, a thin line of blood appearing on his cheek.
For a moment, he was still. Then, slowly, he turned back to face me. His tongue darted out to lick the blood from his lip, and his eyes burned with something that looked dangerously like triumph.
"Good," he whispered. "Hit me again. Harder. Or better yet—" his gaze dropped to my lips, "—kiss me. I know you want to. I can see it in your eyes. You hate me, yes. But you also miss the way I made you feel. Elian can worship you all he wants, but he'll never make you forget how my hands felt on your skin. How my mouth felt—"
"ENOUGH!" Elian's voice cracked like thunder. He stepped forward, his sword now pointed directly at Darius's throat. "One more word, and I swear to the gods, I will—"
"You will what, brother?" Darius laughed, not even flinching at the blade. "Kill me? Go ahead. But ask yourself—when she comes to your bed tonight, will she be thinking of me? Will she be moaning my name while you touch her?"
Elian's hand trembled. I could see the conflict in his eyes—the love he had for me warring with the hatred he had for his own brother.
I released Darius's chain and stepped back, my chest heaving. My skin was on fire. My thighs were pressed together so tightly they ached. I wanted to kill him. I wanted to scream. I wanted to—
"Take him to the dungeons," I ordered the guards, my voice shaking despite my best efforts. "Chain him to the wall. No food. No water. And if he speaks, gag him."
The guards grabbed Darius's arms and hauled him to his feet. As they dragged him away, he twisted his head to look at me over his shoulder.
"You can chain my body, Sylvia," he called out, his voice carrying through the silent throne room. "But you can't chain what your body remembers. And tonight, when you're alone in your bed, you'll remember my hands on you. You'll remember how I made you—"
"GET HIM OUT OF MY SIGHT!" I screamed.
The doors slammed shut behind them, and silence fell over the throne room once more.
I stood there, my chest rising and falling rapidly, my hands clenched into fists at my sides. I could still feel the warmth of Darius's skin under my fingers. I could still hear his voice in my head. I could still feel the shameful heat between my thighs.
"Your Majesty..." Elian's voice was soft, hesitant.
I turned to look at him. His sword was sheathed now, his hands empty at his sides. His blue eyes were filled with pain, with concern, with something that looked dangerously like heartbreak.
"Are you alright?" he asked, taking a step toward me.
I wanted to collapse into his arms. I wanted him to hold me and tell me it would be okay. I wanted to forget the way Darius had looked at me, the way his voice had made my body betray me.
But when Elian reached out to touch my arm, I flinched.
His hand froze in mid-air. His expression crumbled.
"I'm fine," I said, my voice cold. I pulled away from him, walking back up the steps to my throne. "I just... I need to be alone."
"Sylvia—" he started, then caught himself. "Your Majesty. Please. Don't let him get inside your head. He's trying to manipulate you."
"I know," I snapped, sitting down on the throne. The gold was cold against my back. "I know what he's doing. Just... go. Please."
Elian stood there for a moment, his jaw tight. Then he bowed his head. "As you wish."
He turned and walked toward the door, his steps heavy. Just before he left, he paused and looked back at me.
"He doesn't deserve to live," Elian said quietly. "But you don't deserve to be tortured by his memory, either. Don't let him win, Sylvia. Don't let him turn you into something you're not."
Then he was gone.
I sat alone in the vast throne room, the silence pressing down on me like a weight. My hands were still trembling. My skin still burned. My body still ached with a need I refused to name.
Darius was right about one thing.
I couldn't chain what my body remembered.
And tonight, when I lay alone in my bed, I knew I would remember his hands on my skin. I would remember his mouth on mine. I would remember the way he had made me scream.
And I would hate myself for it.
But I would also remember something else.
I would remember that he was mine now. That I held his chains. That I could make him beg.
And maybe... maybe that was enough.
For now.
