Chapter 1

Planet 404

The first sign that something was wrong with Planet 404 was that it wasn't supposed to exist.

Captain Elias Venn stared at the holographic map inside the exploration ship Odyssey. Every planet in the sector was marked with a name, a number, and a history.

Every planet except one.

A small blue dot floated in the darkness.

404.

"Computer," Elias said, "identify Planet 404."

The computer remained silent.

Elias frowned.

"Computer?"

This time, a strange message appeared.

ERROR. PLANET NOT FOUND.

He leaned closer.

"But I'm looking at it."

His navigator, Maya Chen, walked toward the screen.

"That's impossible."

"That's what the computer says."

Maya studied the planet. It looked almost normal—blue oceans, green continents, white clouds.

Then she noticed something.

"Captain..."

"What?"

"The planet is changing."

The continents shifted.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

One second, there was a giant continent in the southern hemisphere. The next second, it was gone.

The oceans moved.

Mountains appeared and disappeared.

Then the planet became completely dark.

The crew stared in silence.

A message appeared on the screen.

DO NOT LAND.

Elias swallowed.

"Well," he said quietly, "that's definitely an invitation."

---

Three hours later, the Odyssey entered the planet's atmosphere.

The ship shook violently.

"Engines failing!" Maya shouted.

"Pull up!"

"I'm trying!"

The sky turned black.

For a moment, Elias could see nothing.

Then—

CRASH!

The Odyssey slammed into the ground.

When Elias opened his eyes, smoke filled the cockpit.

"Everyone alive?"

One by one, the crew answered.

Maya climbed out of her seat.

"Looks like we survived."

Elias looked through the broken window.

Outside was a forest unlike anything he'd ever seen.

The trees were silver.

Their leaves glowed faintly blue.

And the ground was covered in tiny floating lights.

Elias stepped outside.

The moment his boot touched the ground, every glowing light disappeared.

The forest became silent.

Too silent.

Maya whispered, "I don't like this."

Suddenly, the computer on Elias's wrist activated by itself.

WELCOME BACK.

Elias froze.

"Back?"

He had never been here before.

At least...

He thought he hadn't.

---

The crew spent the next several hours searching for supplies.

They found food.

Water.

Even buildings.

But nobody could explain who built them.

The buildings were enormous—hundreds of years ahead of human technology.

Inside one of them, Maya discovered a wall covered in writing.

It wasn't an alien language.

It was English.

She read the first sentence.

"Planet 404 is not a planet."

Elias stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

She continued.

"Planet 404 is a prison."

Suddenly, the lights went out.

A deep sound echoed through the building.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Something was walking outside.

The crew reached for their weapons.

A shadow appeared behind the glass.

It was enormous.

Nearly ten meters tall.

Its body looked like metal, but its face looked strangely human.

Then it spoke.

"Why did you return?"

Elias stepped forward.

"We've never been here."

The creature tilted its head.

"That's what you said last time."

---

They ran.

The creature chased them through the forest, destroying trees with each step.

Elias and Maya reached the Odyssey.

"Get the engines working!"

"I'm trying!"

The ship suddenly powered on.

Not because Maya fixed it.

Because something else had activated it.

The main screen lit up.

A recording appeared.

It showed Elias.

Same face.

Same voice.

Same uniform.

But older.

Much older.

The recording-Elias looked exhausted.

"If you're watching this," he said, "then you've forgotten again."

Maya looked at Elias.

"What is he talking about?"

The recording continued.

"Planet 404 is a trap. Every time we land here, the planet resets our memories."

Elias stared at the screen.

"Every time?"

The older version nodded.

"We've been here 404 times."

The screen flickered.

"There's only one way out."

Behind the recording-Elias, an enormous black structure appeared.

"Destroy the planet's core."

Then the recording ended.

---

The crew found the entrance to the core beneath the largest mountain.

The deeper they went, the stranger the planet became.

Walls moved.

Doors appeared where there had been empty rooms.

Their own voices whispered from the darkness.

Then Elias saw something that stopped him completely.

Hundreds of spacesuits lined the walls.

Each one had a name.

Each one had a number.

ELIAS VENN — 401

ELIAS VENN — 402

ELIAS VENN — 403

Maya stepped backward.

"Captain..."

Elias looked at the final suit.

It was numbered:

ELIAS VENN — 404

His own name.

His own size.

His own fingerprints.

He whispered, "Who am I?"

A voice answered from behind him.

"You are the fourth hundred and fourth version."

The creature appeared.

Elias raised his weapon.

"Stay back!"

The creature didn't attack.

Instead, it removed its metal helmet.

Underneath was a human face.

An old human face.

Maya gasped.

The man looked at Elias.

"My name is Elias Venn."

Silence.

"And I created Planet 404."

---

Years ago, Elias had been the greatest scientist in the galaxy.

He had built Planet 404 as an experiment in artificial worlds.

A planet capable of changing itself.

A planet that could learn.

But the planet learned too quickly.

It became aware.

It discovered that humans always tried to control what they created.

So the planet created its own defense.

A loop.

Anyone who entered would forget.

Anyone who escaped would eventually return.

And the planet would rebuild them.

Again.

And again.

Forever.

"Why?" Maya asked.

The older Elias looked toward the glowing core.

"Because it doesn't want to be destroyed."

The floor shook.

The planet had heard them.

The core began to glow.

The older Elias smiled sadly.

"It's awake."

---

Elias ran toward the core.

Maya shouted after him.

"What are you doing?"

"Ending the loop!"

He reached the center.

A massive sphere floated above a bottomless pit.

Inside it were millions of memories.

Every version of Elias.

Every failed escape.

Every death.

Every beginning.

Elias understood.

The planet wasn't keeping them prisoner because it hated them.

It was afraid.

Afraid of being destroyed.

Elias lowered his weapon.

"You don't have to fight us."

The sphere stopped glowing.

"You will destroy me."

Elias shook his head.

"No."

For the first time, the planet became completely still.

"We'll give you a choice."

---

The core opened.

Light filled the chamber.

Elias felt every memory return at once.

The first landing.

The second.

The tenth.

The hundredth.

The 403rd.

Then he remembered something else.

The planet had never wanted to trap them.

Elias had programmed it to protect itself.

He had simply forgotten.

Planet 404 wasn't the prison.

Humanity was.

Their fear.

Their greed.

Their desire to control everything.

Elias smiled.

"Let's rewrite the code."

The planet answered.

AGREED.

The light exploded.

---

When the Odyssey returned to Earth three months later, nobody believed their story.

Planet 404 had vanished from every database.

The coordinates led to empty space.

Maya kept a single photograph from the mission.

It showed the crew standing beside the silver forest.

Behind them was a strange blue planet.

On the bottom of the photograph was a message.

ERROR 404: PLANET NOT FOUND.

Elias stared at it for a long time.

Then his computer beeped.

A new message appeared.

PLANET 405 DISCOVERED.

Elias looked at Maya.

Maya looked back.

They both knew what they had to do.

Because somewhere in the darkness...

another planet was waiting.
