1: The Girl Everyone Expected to Fail

Harley Ashcroft had always been known as the problem. It didn’t matter how many times she tried to explain herself, how many times she promised she would do better, or how many times she wished people would see more than her mistakes. Everyone already had an idea of who she was. The troublemaker. The girl who couldn’t stay out of trouble. The younger sister who would never be like Evelyn.

That was the part that bothered Harley the most.

Evelyn was always the comparison. The one people brought up when Harley made a mistake. Teachers would look at her with disappointment before she even said a word, like they were already waiting for her to prove them right. Students whispered about her choices, her attitude, and the way she refused to let anyone control her.

After hearing it for so long, Harley started wondering if maybe they were right.

Maybe she really was the person everyone thought she was.

With her wavy strawberry-blonde hair, full bangs, light skin, and faint freckles, Harley stood out wherever she went. She had a personality just as noticeable as her appearance. She was stubborn, protective, emotional, and quick to anger. When she cared about someone, she cared completely. When she felt betrayed, everyone knew it.

Her biggest problem was that Harley felt everything intensely.

And sometimes those feelings pushed her into choices she regretted later.

Her freshman year of high school was supposed to be a fresh start. A chance to leave behind the reputation she had built and prove that she wasn’t just Evelyn’s reckless little sister.

Instead, one mistake changed everything.

A decision she thought she could handle became something much bigger. The consequences followed quickly, and before Harley had time to understand what was happening, she found herself being sent to JJAEP.

The moment she walked through the doors, she felt like the world had already given up on her.

Everyone inside seemed to have a story. Everyone had a reason they ended up there. But Harley couldn’t stop thinking about how easy it was for people to place a label on someone and never remove it.

Troublemaker.

That was her label.

She told herself she didn’t care. She acted like nothing bothered her. She joked, she argued, and she kept her walls high.

But when she was alone, she wondered if anyone would ever believe she could change.

That was when she noticed him.

Ayden Stevenson.

He wasn’t loud like Harley. He didn’t try to draw attention to himself. He stayed quiet, usually keeping to himself, but there was something about him that made Harley curious.

Ayden was sixteen, taller than her, with a gothic style and a calmness that seemed almost impossible in a place like JJAEP. The one thing that truly showed who he was was his music. When he played his electric guitar, it was like every emotion he kept hidden finally had a voice.

But people didn’t see that side of him.

They only saw the rumors.

They only saw the accusations.

They only saw someone they believed was guilty.

Harley was about to learn that sometimes the people everyone gives up on are the ones worth fighting for.
