Chapter I

Origins

Mavera Risa Kojusan was born on 20 February 2115, the only child of a Turkish physician and a Japanese colonel. Her birth concluded a twenty-seven-year struggle with infertility that had defined much of her parents’ married life. Contemporary medical records indicate that she had originally developed as one of a pair of twins; however, her sibling was lost during pregnancy. Against considerable medical odds, Mavera survived and was delivered prematurely.

At birth, physicians confirmed that she had albinism. Her snow-white hair, pale complexion, and unusually light eyes immediately distinguished her from other newborns. Although regarded by some as a medical rarity, her parents viewed these characteristics as a gift rather than a burden.

Her mother chose the name Mavera, a Turkish name traditionally associated with that which lies beyond the horizon, the pursuit of the unknown, and spiritual depth. Believing that her daughter’s future would extend far beyond ordinary expectations, she considered no other name more fitting.

Her father selected the name Risa, a Japanese name commonly associated with wisdom, reason, and the delicacy of fine silk. According to later family notes, her remarkable appearance inspired his choice.

Together with her father’s surname, the child’s full name became Mavera Risa Kojusan, a name that, more than a century later, would still appear in textbooks, historical archives, and academic literature across the world.

Only nine days after her birth, tragedy struck.

While returning home from the hospital with their newborn daughter, Mavera’s parents became involved in a chain-reaction traffic collision at a rain-soaked four-way intersection in Istanbul. The accident claimed both of their lives instantly.

Official investigations later concluded that neither parent had been at fault.

Their deaths were widely reported and would eventually become part of the historical record surrounding Mavera’s early life.

The infant, however, survived.

Secured inside a rear-facing child seat, she escaped the collision with only a minor injury to her forehead. Although medically insignificant, the wound healed into a small scar that remained visible throughout her life and later became one of her most recognizable physical features.

Because the accident had occurred in Istanbul and her mother had held Turkish citizenship, custody of the infant was transferred to the Turkish authorities.

Neither of her parents left behind surviving relatives.

Ironically, both had themselves grown up as orphans.

Within nineteen days of her birth, Mavera officially entered the Istanbul Child Protection System and was placed in one of the city’s orphanages.

Her earliest years passed without incident.

Caregivers consistently described her as an unusually quiet child. Unlike most infants, she rarely cried, demanded attention, or caused disruption. Staff reports from the period repeatedly noted her calm temperament and remarkable independence.

These qualities initially made her one of the easiest children to care for.

As she grew older, however, those same qualities gradually isolated her from the other children.

She seldom participated in games.

She rarely ran through the courtyard alongside the others.

Loud laughter and careless play seemed to hold little interest for her.

Instead, she preferred observation over participation, silence over conversation.

It was this difference, more than anything else, that drew the attention of the older children.

The first incidents were minor.

Her lunch tray would be deliberately knocked from her hands.

Balls would be thrown directly at her during outdoor games.

On several occasions, she discovered that her neatly folded clothes had been deliberately torn apart inside her locker.

Institutional records suggest that Mavera never reported a single one of these incidents.

She neither retaliated nor sought protection.

Her silence, unfortunately, encouraged further abuse.

Over time, isolated acts of bullying developed into systematic harassment involving children from multiple age groups.

Thus began one of the defining chapters of Mavera Kojusan’s adolescence, a period that would shape both her worldview and the mission she would later dedicate her life to.
