Chapter 1 The Night They Arr
PART 1
Rain hammered against the roof like thousands of fists demanding to be let in.
Lightning tore across the night sky, revealing the Hart family home—a small, aging house that seemed to tremble beneath the weight of the storm.
Inside...
No one spoke.
The steady ticking of the old wall clock sounded louder than the rain itself.
Richard Hart stood motionless by the living room window, his eyes fixed on the darkness beyond the rusted front gate. His hands trembled uncontrollably, clenched so tightly they had turned pale.
Amelia noticed immediately.
"Richard..."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"What happened?"
He didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Instead, his gaze drifted toward the staircase, where soft laughter echoed from upstairs.
Lenora.
She was helping her younger sister, Nora, fold freshly washed clothes while humming an old song their mother used to sing.
For one fleeting moment...
Everything felt normal.
Everything felt safe.
Then—
Two sharp beams of light sliced through the curtain of rain.
Richard's heart nearly stopped.
"No..."
The word escaped his lips like a prayer.
"They're early."
Three long black luxury cars glided silently through the open gate.
Their headlights cut across the rain like ghostly blades.
The engines died.
Silence.
An unnatural...
Terrifying silence.
Then the driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
Black umbrella.
Black gloves.
Black suit.
His polished shoes landed on the wet ground without making a sound.
One after another...
Eight more men emerged from the remaining vehicles.
None of them spoke.
None of them looked around.
They moved with terrifying precision.
Not like bodyguards.
Like soldiers carrying out an order they had rehearsed a thousand times.
Richard staggered backward.
The color drained from his face.
Amelia grabbed his trembling arm.
"Richard..."
Her breathing quickened.
"Who are they?"
His lips quivered.
"They came..."
His voice cracked.
"They actually came..."
A slow...
Deliberate knock echoed through the house.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Upstairs...
Neither Lenora nor Nora heard it.
But downstairs...
It sounded like death itself had come calling.
Amelia stared at the front door.
Then at her husband.
Fear flooded her eyes.
"Don't open it."
Richard slowly closed his eyes.
"If I don't..."
His voice was hollow.
"They'll come inside anyway."
Another knock.
Harder this time.
The old wooden door shuddered beneath the impact.
Upstairs, Lenora frowned.
"Mom?"
She stepped onto the landing and leaned over the railing.
"Someone's here."
No one answered.
The silence frightened her far more than the knocking.
She slowly made her way downstairs.
Each wooden step creaked beneath her feet.
Halfway down...
She saw her father's face.
She had never seen him look so terrified.
Not when his own parents died.
Not when the bank threatened to take their home.
Not even during the hardest years of their lives.
This...
This was something else.
This was pure terror.
Another knock.
Then a calm voice spoke from the other side of the door.
"Mr. Richard Hart."
The voice was smooth.
Respectful.
Almost... polite.
"We know you're home."
A brief silence followed.
Then—
"Please don't make Lord Draven wait."
The entire house froze.
Richard's knees nearly gave out beneath him.
Lenora had never heard the name before.
But the moment it was spoken...
Her father's eyes filled with tears.
And in that instant...
She knew.
Whatever—or whoever—was waiting beyond that door...
...was about to change her life forever.
End of Part 1
PART 2
The silence lingered.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Richard slowly turned toward his wife.
Tears streamed down Amelia's face before she even realized she was crying.
"Please..."
She shook her head desperately.
"There has to be another way."
Richard's shoulders slumped.
"There isn't."
Lenora reached the bottom of the stairs.
Her eyes moved from her trembling mother...
...to her pale father...
...then to the front door.
"Dad..."
"What is going on?"
Richard looked at her.
For twenty-four years...
He had protected her from every hardship life had thrown at them.
Tonight...
He couldn't protect her anymore.
Another knock echoed through the house.
Knock.
The calm voice returned.
"Lord Draven dislikes waiting."
Amelia suddenly rushed toward the door.
"No!"
Richard grabbed her before she could unlock it.
"They'll kill you!"
She fought against his grip.
"I don't care!"
"They can't have my daughter!"
"They can't!"
Her cries filled the house.
Upstairs, Nora came running.
"Mum?"
Her frightened eyes widened.
"What's happening?"
Lenora quickly wrapped an arm around her younger sister.
"It's okay."
But even she didn't believe her own words.
Nothing was okay.
Richard wiped his face with shaking hands.
Then, with a broken voice, he whispered—
"They didn't come to negotiate."
"They came..."
"...to collect."
Lenora frowned.
"Collect what?"
Her father couldn't answer.
He looked away.
That silence was all the answer she needed.
Outside...
One of the men glanced at his watch.
Another stepped forward.
Without warning—
BANG!
The front gate swung open on its own.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the stone pathway.
Slow.
Steady.
Patient.
Each step sounded closer than the last.
Closer...
Closer...
Until they finally stopped just outside the front door.
No more knocking.
No more voices.
Only silence.
The kind of silence that comes just before something terrible happens.
Richard closed his eyes.
"They're here."
And for the first time in her life...
Lenora felt genuine fear.
Not fear of poverty.
Not fear of losing a job.
Not fear of failure.
This...
...was the fear of something she couldn't understand.
Something far darker.
Something that had already decided her fate long before tonight.
The doorknob slowly began to turn.
End of Part 2
PART 3
The brass doorknob turned slowly.
Once.
Then stopped.
No one dared breathe.
Amelia clutched Lenora's arm so tightly that her fingernails dug into her skin.
"Don't answer..."
she whispered.
"Please..."
Richard's face had become completely colorless.
He looked like a man standing before his own execution.
Then—
The knocking stopped.
Every sound outside disappeared.
Even the rain seemed quieter.
Seconds passed.
One...
Two...
Three...
Nobody moved.
Lenora frowned.
"Did they leave?"
Richard didn't answer.
His eyes never left the door.
Suddenly—
A deep mechanical sound echoed outside.
Click.
The electricity throughout the house went out.
Darkness swallowed every room.
Nora screamed.
"Mum!"
Amelia pulled both daughters close.
"It's okay..."
"It's okay..."
But her trembling voice betrayed her.
It wasn't okay.
Not even close.
Lightning flashed through the windows.
For a single heartbeat...
The figures outside became visible.
Tall.
Motionless.
Umbrellas hiding their faces.
Watching.
Waiting.
Then darkness returned.
Lenora's heart pounded against her ribs.
"They're still there..."
Richard nodded without looking away.
"They'll wait all night if they have to."
Another flash of lightning.
This time...
Lenora noticed something.
None of the men had moved.
Not even an inch.
They stood like statues.
Like guards protecting something far more terrifying than themselves.
Then—
A car door opened.
Not one of the guards.
Someone else.
Every man outside immediately lowered his head.
Richard's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
His whisper barely escaped.
"No..."
The sound of polished shoes meeting wet stone echoed through the night.
Slow.
Measured.
Confident.
One step.
Another.
And another.
Whoever had stepped out...
Didn't hurry.
Because he already knew no one inside could escape.
The footsteps stopped just beyond the front door.
Silence.
Then a calm voice spoke.
Lower.
Colder.
Far more frightening than the first.
"Open the door."
No shouting.
No threats.
Just three simple words.
Yet they carried the weight of a command no one dared ignore.
Richard's eyes closed.
His body trembled.
"He's here..."
Lenora looked at her father.
"For the first time in twenty-four years...
...she saw a man who had completely lost hope."
End of part 3
PART 4
Richard's body shook violently.
His breathing became shallow.
For a moment...
It looked as though he might collapse.
Amelia rushed to him.
"Richard..."
She cupped his face with trembling hands.
"Please don't do this."
"We can leave."
"We'll run."
"We'll disappear."
"They'll never find us."
Richard gave a broken smile.
A smile filled with defeat.
"You still don't understand..."
His voice was barely audible.
"They always find you."
A tear rolled down his cheek.
"I should've left years ago."
"I should've taken all of you far away."
"I was a coward..."
"I thought if I stayed quiet..."
"...they would forget."
"They never forget."
Lenora stared at him in disbelief.
"What are you talking about?"
"Who are these people?"
"What do they want from us?"
Richard slowly turned toward her.
His lips parted.
Then closed again.
How could a father tell his daughter...
...that she had been promised to darkness long before she was old enough to understand the meaning of fear?
Outside...
The rain continued to fall.
The man standing beyond the door remained perfectly still.
He wasn't impatient.
He wasn't angry.
He simply waited.
As though he knew the answer would eventually be yes.
One of the guards stepped forward.
Without saying a word...
He placed a black leather folder on the doorstep.
Then he stepped back into line.
Richard's face crumpled.
"No..."
Amelia looked at the folder.
"What is that?"
Richard couldn't answer.
Because he already knew.
Lenora walked toward the door.
"I'll see."
Before her hand reached the knob—
Richard grabbed her wrist.
His grip was so tight it hurt.
"No."
She looked at him, startled.
"Dad..."
His eyes were red.
"If you open that door..."
His voice broke.
"...your life will never belong to you again."
Silence.
Lenora looked from her father...
...to the shadow beneath the door...
...to the black folder waiting outside.
Her heart pounded so loudly she could hear it.
For reasons she couldn't explain...
She felt as though that folder already carried her name.
And somehow...
She knew.
Whatever was written inside...
Would change everything.
End of Part 4
PART 5
Richard's trembling hand slowly released Lenora's wrist.
For several long seconds...
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The rain continued to batter the roof as though the heavens themselves were trying to warn them.
Lenora looked at her father.
She had never seen him cry.
Not once.
Not when they lost everything.
Not when life became unbearably difficult.
Yet tonight...
He looked completely broken.
"Dad..."
Her voice softened.
"Tell me what's happening."
Richard lowered his head.
"I can't."
"You have to."
"I can't."
His voice cracked.
"If I tell you..."
"...you'll hate me."
Amelia immediately shook her head.
"No."
She grabbed his shoulders.
"She won't."
Richard looked at his wife with empty eyes.
"You don't know that."
Another flash of lightning illuminated the living room.
For the briefest second...
Lenora saw something tucked inside the black folder lying beyond the door.
A sheet of paper.
Thick.
Cream-colored.
Sealed with black wax.
At its center...
A crown.
Above it...
A raven with its wings spread wide.
The same symbol Richard had once burned from an old photograph years ago.
She remembered asking him about it.
He had smiled nervously.
Then thrown the photograph into the fire.
Now...
That same symbol had returned.
Outside...
The man waiting beyond the door glanced toward the upstairs window.
He didn't move.
He simply watched.
As though he already knew everyone inside.
As though he had been here before.
Richard noticed.
His breathing became uneven again.
"He knows this house..."
He whispered.
"He remembers."
Lenora frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Richard looked toward the front door.
His expression slowly filled with regret.
"I prayed..."
"...that you would never have to see that crest again."
The room fell silent.
Then—
A fourth knock.
Not loud.
Not violent.
Just one.
Knock.
The calm voice returned.
"Mr. Hart."
"I am authorized to wait until sunrise."
A pause.
"But if we leave without her..."
The voice became even quieter.
"...someone else will pay the price."
Richard froze.
Amelia covered her mouth.
Lenora's heart skipped a beat.
Someone else?
Who?
Before anyone could speak...
Nora's frightened voice broke the silence.
"What..."
"...do they mean?"
End of Part 5
PART 6
Nora's frightened voice hung in the air.
"What... do they mean?"
No one answered her.
Amelia quickly pulled Nora against her chest.
"Don't listen."
"It's nothing."
But her trembling arms told a different story.
Richard stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the black folder beyond the door.
His breathing grew heavier.
"They've done this before..."
he whispered.
"They always give you a choice."
Lenora frowned.
"A choice?"
Richard let out a bitter laugh.
"No."
"They make you believe you have one."
The room fell silent once more.
Outside...
The guards hadn't moved.
Not a single one.
They stood beneath the pouring rain without umbrellas now, as if the storm itself meant nothing to them.
Only the man nearest the door remained covered.
His black umbrella hid his face completely.
Lenora couldn't see him.
But somehow...
She could feel him.
Watching.
Waiting.
Studying every heartbeat inside the house.
Her fingers curled into fists.
She had never been afraid of another human being before.
Until tonight.
"Dad..."
she said quietly.
"Who is Lord Draven?"
Richard's eyes slowly closed.
For a long moment...
He didn't answer.
When he finally spoke...
His voice was hollow.
"The man people pray they never meet."
Another flash of lightning illuminated the living room.
For the first time...
Lenora noticed something else.
Her father wasn't looking at the front door anymore.
He was staring at the family portrait hanging above the fireplace.
The photograph had been taken years ago.
Richard.
Amelia.
Lenora.
Little Nora.
All smiling.
All happy.
Richard walked toward it with slow, unsteady steps.
His shaking hand reached up.
He gently touched Lenora's face in the picture.
"I'm sorry..."
he whispered.
"So... so sorry."
Without warning—
He lifted the portrait from the wall.
Amelia's eyes widened.
"Richard..."
"What are you doing?"
He didn't answer.
He turned the frame over.
Lenora stared.
There was something taped to the back.
An old yellowed envelope.
Its edges were worn with age.
Richard held it as though it weighed a hundred pounds.
"This..."
he murmured.
"I prayed I'd never have to open it."
Lenora's heartbeat quickened.
"What is it?"
Richard looked at the envelope.
Then toward the front door.
Finally...
He whispered the words that made the room feel colder than the storm outside.
"It tells us why they came."
End of Part 6
PART 7
Richard stared at the yellowed envelope as though it contained a curse.
His fingers refused to move.
He had hidden it for twenty-four years.
Now...
The past had finally come to collect its debt.
"Richard..."
Amelia's voice trembled.
"Don't."
He slowly looked at her.
"I don't have a choice anymore."
Outside...
The rain became heavier.
Thunder rolled across the sky.
Almost as if the heavens knew what was about to be revealed.
Lenora stepped closer.
"Dad..."
"Tell me the truth."
"For once..."
"Please."
Richard looked at his eldest daughter.
His eyes were filled with guilt.
"If I tell you everything..."
"...you'll understand why I've never forgiven myself."
He carefully broke the faded wax seal.
The envelope crackled with age.
Inside...
There was only one letter.
Its paper had turned yellow with time.
The handwriting was neat.
Elegant.
Almost beautiful.
Richard unfolded it with shaking hands.
His lips quivered before he spoke.
"It arrived..."
"...the day you were born."
Lenora's heart skipped a beat.
"My... birth?"
Richard nodded.
"They knew."
"They knew before anyone else."
Amelia closed her eyes.
Tears streamed silently down her cheeks.
"I begged him to burn it."
"I begged him."
Richard swallowed hard.
"I should have listened."
He lowered his eyes to the letter.
The room fell silent.
Even Nora stopped crying.
Richard began reading.
«Richard Hart,»
«Congratulations on the birth of your first daughter.»
«Raise her well.»
«Protect her.»
«Love her.»
«For when she reaches the appointed age...»
Richard's voice caught in his throat.
He couldn't continue.
Lenora's breathing became uneven.
"Dad..."
"What does it say?"
Richard looked at her.
Pure agony filled his eyes.
He forced himself to continue.
«...she will become the lawful bride of the Draven heir.»
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Lenora blinked.
Once.
Twice.
She laughed.
A small, confused laugh.
"What?"
She looked at her mother.
Then at her father.
"This..."
"This isn't funny."
"Nora, tell them."
Her little sister only stared back in frightened confusion.
Richard lowered the letter.
"I wish..."
"...it were a joke."
Outside...
The man beneath the black umbrella slowly checked his watch.
Without looking up, he spoke.
"Five minutes, Mr. Hart."
"Lord Draven has been more than patient."
End of Part 7
PART 8
"No..."
Lenora shook her head repeatedly.
"No."
"This has to be some kind of mistake."
She snatched the letter from her father's trembling hands.
Her eyes raced across the faded words.
Each sentence felt colder than the last.
The elegant handwriting never wavered.
It was as though the person who wrote it had never doubted that this day would come.
At the bottom of the page...
A single black seal.
A raven perched above a crown.
The same symbol she had seen on the folder outside.
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
"They can't do this."
"They don't even know me."
Richard laughed.
It wasn't the laugh of a happy man.
It was the laugh of someone who had long ago accepted defeat.
"They know everything."
Lenora looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"They've watched this family for years."
Her blood ran cold.
"What?"
Richard nodded weakly.
"They knew your first day of school."
"They knew when you graduated."
"They knew every birthday."
"They even knew when you caught pneumonia at twelve."
Lenora's face drained of color.
"No..."
Richard continued.
"They've always been watching."
Amelia covered her face and sobbed.
"I told him..."
"I told him we should leave."
"But where could we run?"
"They would've found us."
Lenora stumbled backward.
Her entire life...
Had it all been a lie?
Had someone really been watching her...
Since the day she was born?
Outside...
The black umbrella tilted slightly.
The mysterious man looked toward one of the upstairs windows.
He couldn't see inside.
But somehow...
It felt as though he already knew exactly what was happening.
One of the guards stepped closer.
Without knocking...
He spoke.
"Mr. Hart."
"Your time is almost over."
Richard's breathing became ragged.
Lenora looked at the front door.
Then at her father.
Then back at the letter in her trembling hands.
"No."
"I'm not going."
"They can't force me."
Richard closed his eyes.
When he opened them again...
There was nothing left in them but sorrow.
"They don't force people, Lenora."
"They punish everyone around them..."
"...until the person they want walks out willingly."
The room fell silent.
No one noticed...
Not even for a second...
That little Nora had quietly disappeared from behind their mother.
End of Part 8
PART 9
"Nora?"
Amelia turned instinctively.
The smile she tried to force onto her face vanished.
"Nora?"
There was no answer.
The little girl was gone.
Her heart lurched.
"Nora!"
She rushed toward the staircase.
The kitchen.
The dining room.
The hallway.
Empty.
"Nora!"
Her voice echoed through the house.
Lenora spun around.
"Nora?"
Just seconds ago...
She had been standing beside their mother.
Richard's eyes widened in horror.
"No..."
"No..."
His breathing became frantic.
"They're inside."
Lenora froze.
"What?"
Richard looked around wildly.
"They're already inside the house!"
The words sent a chill racing down everyone's spine.
Amelia ran upstairs two steps at a time.
She threw open Nora's bedroom door.
Nothing.
She searched beneath the bed.
Inside the wardrobe.
Behind the curtains.
"Nora!"
Her scream was swallowed by the storm.
Downstairs...
Lenora's heart pounded violently.
She searched every corner of the living room.
"Nora!"
"Stop playing!"
"This isn't funny!"
Silence.
Then—
A soft sound.
A tiny giggle.
It came from somewhere inside the house.
Lenora turned sharply.
"Nora?"
Another giggle.
Faint.
Almost playful.
Coming from...
Behind the bookshelf.
Her breath caught.
She slowly walked toward it.
The old bookshelf stood against the wall exactly where it had been her entire life.
Nothing unusual.
Nothing strange.
Yet...
The giggle came again.
"Nora?"
She reached out.
Just as her fingertips brushed the edge of the shelf—
Richard grabbed her arm with terrifying force.
"No!"
His voice thundered through the room.
"Don't touch it!"
Lenora stared at him.
"Dad..."
"There could be a door behind it."
"I know."
His face twisted with terror.
"And that's exactly why you must never open it."
Another tiny giggle.
Then...
Complete silence.
Outside...
The man beneath the black umbrella smiled for the first time.
It wasn't a smile of joy.
It was the smile of someone who knew...
The night had only just begun.
End of Part 9
PART 10
Richard's grip tightened around Lenora's wrist.
"So help me God..."
"If you touch that bookshelf..."
"...we're all dead."
Lenora stared at him in disbelief.
"Dad..."
"How can a bookshelf—"
"Don't!"
His voice cracked.
"I said don't!"
She had never heard him shout before.
Not once in her twenty-four years.
The fear in his eyes wasn't ordinary fear.
It was the fear of a man who had seen something no human being should ever witness.
The room fell silent again.
The strange giggling had stopped.
It was as if whoever—or whatever—had made the sound had vanished.
Amelia came running downstairs.
Her face was soaked with tears.
"She's gone."
Richard slowly closed his eyes.
"No..."
Amelia grabbed him by the shirt.
"Our daughter is gone!"
"Where is she?"
"You said they'd only come for Lenora!"
"You promised!"
Richard couldn't answer.
Because he had never made such a promise.
He had only prayed it would be true.
Lenora rushed toward the front door.
"I'm going outside."
"If Nora is with them—"
Before she could touch the handle...
The door opened.
On its own.
A cold gust of wind swept into the house, carrying the scent of rain and wet earth.
The guards remained where they were.
Perfectly still.
Like statues carved from stone.
Then...
The man beneath the black umbrella stepped forward.
For the first time...
He crossed the threshold.
Every member of the Hart family froze.
He folded his umbrella with slow, deliberate movements.
Water dripped silently onto the wooden floor.
He removed his black leather gloves one finger at a time.
Then he lifted his head.
His face was calm.
Cold.
Expressionless.
His sharp grey eyes swept across the room before stopping on Richard.
"You've kept Lord Draven waiting."
His voice was smooth.
Almost gentle.
But beneath that gentleness...
Lurked something terrifying.
Richard lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
The man ignored the apology.
Instead, he looked at Lenora.
For a long moment...
He simply studied her.
As though comparing the woman before him...
...to the child he had last seen many years ago.
Then, without the slightest hint of emotion, he spoke.
"Miss Lenora Hart."
"It's time."
The room seemed to grow colder.
Lenora's heartbeat thundered in her ears.
She didn't know this man.
She had never seen him before.
Yet somehow...
He spoke her name as though he had known her all her life.
Behind him...
One of the guards stepped forward.
Holding Nora's small white ribbon.
The one she had been wearing in her hair only minutes ago.
Amelia screamed.
