The air in the courtyard was thick with the scent of ozone and spilled blood. Chaos erupted as Zoe broke past the front line, her defiance screaming louder than the warnings of the family and friends behind her.
"Zoe, stop! Don't do it!"
Her name echoed off the stone walls, but the pleas didn't register. Hollowed out by grief and driven by a reckless, suicidal resolve, she turned her tear-streaked face toward the entity standing at the center of the carnage—the dark architect of their ruin. She threw her hands out, openly inviting the killing blow, daring the monster to finish what he started.
The devil didn't hesitate.
Sensing the fatal opening, a cruel smile twisted his features. He channeled the entirety of his dark aura, gathering a dense, suffocating sphere of black lightning into his palm, and unleashed it with lethal force straight at her chest.
At the edge of her vision, a dark blur broke the frantic motion of the crowd.
James.
He didn't calculate the risk; he didn't look back. With a desperate burst of speed, James threw himself directly into the path of the oncoming projectile, intentionally intercepting the strike meant for Zoe.
CRACK.
The impact was deafening—a sickening sound of tearing flesh and fractured bone. The raw energy slammed into James's torso, lifting him off his feet before he crashed violently onto the blood-slicked cobblestones.
Time seemed to stutter and stall.
Zoe stood frozen, her breath caught in her throat as the ringing in her ears drowned out the screams of the onlookers. Her gaze dropped slowly to the ground. James lay sprawled just inches away, his chest convulsing as dark, crimson blood pooled rapidly beneath him, soaking into the dirt.
Trembling uncontrollably, she dropped to her knees beside him, her hands hovering uselessly over his ruined armor. The sheer disbelief paralyzed her mind. He took it. He took the blow meant for me.
James's eyelids fluttered. With an agonizing, herculean effort, he turned his head toward her. His breathing was shallow, rattled with fluid, but a faint, heartbreakingly familiar ghost of a smile touched his lips.
"You... you stubborn idiot..." James whispered, coughing up a dark spray of blood that stained his chin. His hand twitched against the stone, barely managing to brush against her fingertips. "I told you... I wouldn't let you throw it all away..."
His fingers went slack, the strength abandoning him entirely as his hand slipped from hers, leaving the courtyard suffocatingly silent save for the howling wind.

Welcome, Readers.
This is my very first attempt at writing a full-length novel, and to be completely honest, stepping into this world feels both exciting and terrifying. I sincerely hope the pacing captures your interest and that the twists keep you hooked rather than leaving you behind. There may be a few bumps along the way—perhaps a stray typo or a confusing name, especially since several characters carry dual identities and hidden pasts.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving this story a chance. Please bear with me as I find my footing, and let’s dive right in.
