Chapter One — The Surrender
The heavy iron-bound doors of the Great Keep groaned open.
The sound rolled through the ancient fortress like an ominous warning, echoing across the cold stone hall and disappearing beneath towering arches carved with forgotten runes. Torchlight flickered against the damp walls, casting long, jagged shadows over the war-scarred banners hanging from the rafters.
The air smelled of smoke, cold steel, and old blood.
At the far end of the hall sat the man who had brought empires to their knees.
Tervald. High King of the Reaches.
He occupied the towering stone throne as if the fortress itself had been forged around his broad frame. One sun-bronzed arm rested casually over the pommel of his massive broadsword, the steel still bearing the faint discoloration of dried blood from those who had believed him mortal. His blood-red velvet mantle hung loosely over his shoulders, exposing his heavily muscled chest crisscrossed by leather harnesses and the pale white silver of old battle scars.
Behind the harsh lines of his face burned a pair of intense, cold hazel eyes—watching the room like a predator in the shadows.
The delegation from the defeated empire entered the hall slowly.
Every step they took dragged beneath the suffocating weight of the silence surrounding them. They were men raised in palaces of gold and silk, but none of those riches offered protection here. Not inside the Great Keep. Not before the Wolf King.
The northern warriors lining the hall watched them in stony silence. They had followed Tervald through fire, snow, and slaughter. They had seen him break sieges and force untouchable rulers to their knees. Now, they stood as silent witnesses to another kingdom's ruin.
At the head of the delegation walked the emperor's chief envoy. By the time he reached the base of the dais, his regal composure had completely shattered.
The envoy dropped heavily to his knees, pressing his forehead against the freezing stone, only inches away from the heaps of gold coins, sealed treaties, and blood-signed charters piled before the throne.
"Great Tervald..." the envoy rasped, his voice trembling in the vast room. "High King of the Reaches..."
No answer came. Only the low crackle of the hearth fire answered him.
The envoy swallowed hard, his hands shaking against the floor. "Our Emperor begs for your mercy. The southern lands you claimed have been surrendered. The tribute has been delivered in full. The treaty is signed."
He hesitated, his breath catching in his throat before delivering the final, shameful sacrifice.
"And... to guarantee our absolute submission... we offer the crown princess herself."
The hall grew dead silent.
"She will remain here..." the envoy whispered, his head bowed lower still. "...to serve at your feet, as your slave."
For the first time, Tervald moved.
Slowly, deliberately, he shifted upon his stone throne. The leather harness tight across his chest creaked as he leaned forward, his sharp hazel gaze sweeping over the trembling diplomat with a flick of cold disgust before landing on the quiet figure behind him.
The princess stood flanked by two heavily armored northern guards.
Her wrists were bound with thin leather cords. Her flowing silk gown looked entirely alien inside the brutal, war-forged stone of the Keep. Everything about her garments spoke of soft palace luxury; everything about this room spoke of raw survival.
Yet as Tervald studied her, something about the young woman held his gaze.
She was not crying. She was not trembling. She did not look at the blood-stained floor or plead with her eyes.
She simply stood motionless, her dark eyes tracking every movement in the hall with sharp, unsettling focus—measuring the distance between the guards, the weight of his broadsword, and the exposed pulse at his neck.
Tervald raised one large, calloused hand. Two fingers curled in a quiet, absolute command.
Bring her closer.
The guards nudged her forward until she stood at the foot of the dais. Tervald rose from his throne. The simple movement altered the very air in the room.
The High King descended the stone steps slowly, his heavy iron greaves thudding against the floor. His massive frame cast a long, dark shadow over the princess as he stopped inches away from her.
He reached out. His large, scarred hand closed around her jaw, lifting her face until she was forced to look directly into his hazel eyes.
"Look at me, girl," Tervald commanded quietly. His voice was low, controlled, and far more dangerous than a roar. "Your father believes a soft prize will stay my blade."
His eyes searched her pale, unreadable face.
"He believes a title, a pretty face, and royal blood can buy my mercy." A dark, faint smile touched the corner of his lips as his thumb traced the sharp line of her jaw. "He is mistaken. Inside these walls, your titles are dust. I have no use for princesses... and I do not keep slaves."
He released her chin, letting his hand drop, though his gaze remained locked onto hers.
"You belong to the North now," he said coldly.
He turned his back on her, facing the trembling envoy once more. "Tell your emperor the treaty is sealed. His realm survives another winter."
The envoy let out a shuddering breath of relief, but Tervald's voice thundered over him before he could stand.
"But his daughter stays here. With me."
The massive oak doors of the Keep remained open to the howling mountain wind. The empire had surrendered its lands, its gold, and its pride.
And now, its princess.
Yet Tervald had no idea what had truly been placed into his hands. For not every offering was a sacrifice.
Some were weapons. And some weapons were simply waiting for the right moment to reveal their blade.
