Prologue
Every night, I had the exact same nightmare. It repeated like a broken record in my mind, torturing me in a relentless loop.
I would see you in the distance, standing in a field of flowers. When I screamed your name, it only caused you to drift further away, as if you were entirely incapable of seeing me. I tried running toward you with everything I had, but the beauty of the landscape dissolved with every single step; everything crumbled between my fingers. Without mercy, nature withered around me as I felt the ground cave in, as though the earth itself were trying to swallow me whole. The last thing I could make out before falling was your silhouette fading into the distance.
I would wake up with a jolt, gasping for air, and out of pure instinct, I’d reach out to touch your side of the bed. But you were no longer there.
The fear of moving on with my life without you completely consumes me. Becoming a widow at such a young age is a burden far too heavy to carry; people demand that you don’t pause your journey—they believe it’s remarkably easy to move forward and fall in love again. That societal expectation to forget quickly, to step back out into the world as if your partner had never existed, is the cruelest part of grief. You end up wrapping yourself in absolute solitude, simply because you grow tired of everyone else’s reproaches for not learning to let go at the pace they demand.
On my calendar, weeks have passed, then months... and even reaching the one-year mark has done nothing to heal this massive wound in my heart.
No one understands that you weren’t just some ordinary man. There was a reason I chose to walk down the aisle with you, out of everyone I could have ever met in my life. With you, I had that beautiful connection, a sanctuary where my mind often wanders without mercy. I miss the nights watching movies on the couch; the inside jokes that only you and I understood—ones that anyone else would find foolish; watching you leave every morning and feeling a deep, overwhelming love just seeing you walk through the door in the evening. Our home, which cost us so much to build, and sitting together to plan the meals we wanted to enjoy...
Love is so much more than kisses or sex. It’s having a partner with whom you share everything. Someone for whom you venture to listen to different music, to adopt new hobbies just to overlap with theirs, to try new dishes because you know they adore them, only to end up becoming a fan yourself. It’s creating a unique language that no one else on the planet could ever comprehend; a pure complicity in this cruel world. You knew that upon coming home after an exhausting day, everything bad was left outside that door. With you, I was safe.
But when that ends far too soon, it leaves an emptiness so vast that you don’t even know if you’ll ever want to fill it again. Anyone new who enters my life will always be seen through the lens of who you were. You left a space so enormous and irreplaceable that my mind flatly, unequivocally refuses to ever feel something for anyone else again.
When I close my eyes, I can see you so clearly, but I am terrified of starting to forget the sound of your voice. Over the months, it has begun to distort; I know what it sounded like, but my memory is starting to betray me, altering it, and I wish so desperately to hear it just one last time... You are alive in my mind.
And yet, the real world is demanding that I start breathing again and let go. This year spent in isolation has consumed me completely; I lost my spark and everything I used to be.
I think it’s time to let you go...
