Prologue – The Protector
Rain drummed steadily against the rusted rooftops of an abandoned industrial district on the outskirts of Chicago.
From the outside, the old warehouse looked deserted. Darkness filled its shattered windows, and faded graffiti stretched across the weathered brick walls. Not a single person was visible anywhere nearby.
Yet every sensor confirmed the same thing.
At least eight people were inside.
“They’re confirmed on thermal imaging,” Rhett Sterling said through the earpiece. “Eight armed hostiles. One hostage. Female. She’s alive.”
The engines of the black SUVs had gone silent several minutes earlier. The men of Begay Security Group slipped into their assigned positions without a sound.
Cesar “King” Begay knelt behind a concrete barrier and studied the warehouse blueprint one last time on his tablet.
“Solomon.”
“Rear exit secured.”
“Hugo. Luka.”
“The roof is ours.”
“Landon?”
“West side is clear.”
Cesar gave a single nod.
“No one opens fire unless there’s no other choice. The hostage comes first.”
“Copy that.”
Rhett muted his microphone for a brief moment.
“The police are still ten minutes out.”
“We don’t have ten minutes.”
Rhett didn’t argue.
A muffled scream echoed from inside the warehouse.
An instant later, a man’s furious shout shattered the night.
“Take one more step and she dies!”
Cesar’s expression hardened.
“We’re moving.”
The team advanced as one.
The rear entrance opened without a sound. The dark corridors echoed only with the distant rhythm of rain striking the roof. Every step was precise. Every movement reflected years of relentless training.
Another scream rang out from the second floor.
“You’re going to beg before this is over!”
Cesar’s hands curled into fists.
Inside the room, a young woman knelt on the floor with plastic restraints cutting into her wrists. Tears streaked her face. Her split lip was still bleeding. The barrel of a pistol was pressed tightly against her temple.
“Boss!” one of the guards shouted. “Someone’s inside!”
Every head turned toward the doorway.
Cesar stepped calmly out of the darkness.
He wore black tactical gear. The wolf emblem of Begay Security Group caught the faintest glimmer of light across his chest.
“Let the girl go.”
The gunman laughed.
“You came alone?”
“No.”
“Then where’s the rest of your team?”
A barely noticeable smile touched the corner of Cesar’s mouth.
“They’re already inside.”
The lights went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the warehouse.
Someone cursed.
Someone fired.
The bullet slammed into a concrete wall, sending sparks into the darkness.
“Now!” Rhett’s voice rang through the comms.
Silence exploded into chaos.
Solomon disarmed one attacker in a single fluid movement.
The twins appeared from opposite sides of the room as if they had been born from the darkness itself.
Landon crashed into another gunman like a moving wall.
But Cesar never took his eyes off the hostage.
The captor yanked the pistol tighter against the woman’s neck.
“One more step and—”
He never finished.
Cesar felt it.
The scent of gunpowder.
The man’s racing heartbeat.
His fear.
And something else.
His wolf was awake.
Let me out.
Atlas’s deep voice rolled through his mind like distant thunder.
We won’t fit through—
We will.
His bones shifted.
Muscles tightened beneath his skin.
The power of the transformation flowed through his body like a rising tide.
There was no pain.
After decades of practice, his body obeyed as naturally as breathing.
His fingers lengthened into powerful claws.
His shoulders broadened.
His spine stretched.
Dark fur rippled across his skin.
Only a few heartbeats later, a massive black wolf stood where a man had been moments before.
Golden eyes burned through the darkness.
Every person in the warehouse froze.
“Holy...” one of the men whispered.
Atlas didn’t growl.
He didn’t roar.
He simply walked forward.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
The man holding the hostage stumbled backward.
“Stay back!”
The wolf never stopped.
The gunman’s hand began to shake.
That was the moment Cesar had been waiting for.
One lightning-fast leap.
Atlas covered the distance between them in an instant.
The pistol flew across the room.
The attacker crashed onto the concrete floor.
Before he could recover, Atlas was already standing over him.
His massive paws pinned the man’s chest to the ground.
Golden eyes locked onto terrified human ones.
He didn’t bite.
He didn’t kill.
He didn’t have to.
The man threw up his hands in surrender.
“Please... don’t...”
Within minutes, the remaining gunmen had been disarmed and restrained.
The young woman tried to stand, trembling uncontrollably.
A few steps away, Cesar shifted back into human form. One of his men immediately draped a black tactical blanket over his shoulders.
He walked over, knelt in front of the hostage, and spoke with quiet reassurance.
“You’re safe now.”
She was still shaking.
“I... I thought I was going to die.”
“Not today.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Who... who are you?”
For a moment, Cesar said nothing.
In the distance, the sirens of approaching police cruisers echoed through the rain.
He stood and gently helped her to her feet.
“Cesar Begay.”
She blinked in confusion.
“No... I mean... who are you people?”
Cesar glanced toward his team.
Solomon was cuffing the last gunman.
Hugo and Luka were securing the building.
Landon was already checking the injured.
Then he looked back at the woman.
“Begay Security Group.”
That was all he said.
Moments later, the police arrived.
By the time the first officers entered the warehouse, Cesar and his team had already disappeared into the rain-soaked Chicago night.
