Prologue
The Girl Who Borrowed Tomorrow
The old clock shop stood at the end of Ash Street, where nobody seemed to notice it anymore.
Except for Maya.
On the day she turned twenty-one, she stepped inside to escape the rain. Dust floated through golden beams of sunlight, and hundreds of clocks ticked in perfect harmony.
Behind the counter sat an old man with silver eyes.
“I’ve been expecting you,” he said.
Maya laughed nervously. “You must say that to everyone.”
“I don’t.”
He handed her a small antique pocket watch. It was engraved with a single sentence:
One minute forward. Never twice.
“What does it do?”
“It lets you see exactly one minute into your own future. Use it wisely.”
Before Maya could ask another question, the old man disappeared into the back room. When she looked again, the shop was empty.
That evening, curiosity won.
She pressed the watch.
The world blurred.
For one impossible minute she watched herself standing on the sidewalk as a speeding truck lost control.
A stranger grabbed her arm and pulled her to safety.
Then everything snapped back.
Her heart raced.
A truck horn echoed down the street.
Exactly as she had seen, the truck skidded toward her.
This time she stepped back.
A hand caught hers.
“You okay?” asked the same stranger.
He had dark eyes, rain-soaked hair, and a crooked smile.
“I’m Ethan.”
Maya stared at him.
“I... know.”
From that moment, her life changed.
The watch saved her from accidents, embarrassing mistakes, and impossible situations. It became her secret advantage.
But every time she used it, the ticking grew louder.
One night the watch showed her something different.
Instead of one minute into the future...
...it showed her own funeral.
Standing beside the grave was Ethan.
Crying.
The date on the headstone was only thirty days away.
For the first time, Maya realized the watch wasn’t helping her escape fate.
It was counting down to it.
She closed the watch with trembling hands.
Thirty days.
Thirty chances to change the future.
Or thirty steps toward a destiny that had already begun.
The clock had started.
And somewhere in the shadows...
someone else was listening to it tick.
