The Last Guardian

New York City never truly became quiet.

Even in the middle of the night, there was always something moving—a distant siren, the rumble of a passing train, the voices of strangers drifting through the streets, or the soft glow of apartment windows scattered across the darkness.

For most people, the noise was simply part of life.

For Adrian Vale, it was something else.

It was a reminder that the world was still moving while he remained apart from it.

Adrian lived alone in a modest apartment on the third floor of an old building. His place was clean, organized, and almost completely free of unnecessary things. There were no family photographs on the walls. No decorations that suggested he had close friends. No signs that anyone regularly visited him.

There was only what he needed.

A small table.

A worn sofa.

A shelf filled with old movies.

And, sitting beside the window, a small green plant.

The plant was the one thing Adrian treated differently.

Every morning, he watered it carefully and checked its leaves before beginning his day. It wasn't expensive or rare. It was simply a small plant that had somehow survived under his care.

Adrian understood survival.

Perhaps that was why he kept it.

At six in the morning, he finished his routine and stood in front of the mirror.

His expression was calm.

Almost too calm.

To anyone who saw him in the building, Adrian was simply a quiet man who kept to himself. He rarely spoke unless necessary, never joined conversations in the hallway, and avoided questions about his personal life.

His neighbors knew almost nothing about him.

And Adrian preferred it that way.

What they didn't know was that his quiet life was carefully constructed.

Behind the ordinary clothes and reserved personality was a man who had spent years learning how to remain unnoticed.

Adrian was a professional assassin.

His work was dangerous, secretive, and far removed from the ordinary life his neighbors imagined.

He didn't talk about his assignments.

He didn't discuss his employers.

And he never allowed his work to follow him home.

At least, that was the rule.

His phone vibrated on the table.

Adrian looked at it.

One message.

Victor Kane.

Adrian stared at the name for several seconds before answering.

"Yes?"

Victor's voice came through the phone, calm and businesslike.

"I have something for you."

Adrian walked toward the window.

"What is it?"

"I'll send the details."

There was a short pause.

"Understood."

The call ended.

Adrian put the phone down.

He didn't immediately look at the message.

Instead, his eyes moved toward the plant beside the window.

He reached out and gently adjusted one of its leaves.

Then he returned to his normal routine as though nothing had happened.

Outside, the city was beginning another busy day.

People hurried toward work. Cars filled the streets. Children walked beside their parents. Store owners opened their doors.

Everyone had somewhere to go.

Everyone had someone waiting for them.

Adrian had neither.

He had his apartment.

His work.

His routines.

And his plant.

That was enough.

Or at least, he had convinced himself that it was.

Across the hallway, another apartment door opened.

Adrian glanced up.

A young girl stepped into the corridor carrying a small backpack.

Her name was Mara Bennett.

She was twelve years old.

Mara paused outside her family's apartment and looked down the hallway. She noticed Adrian standing near his door.

Their eyes met.

Adrian gave her a brief nod.

Mara smiled.

"Good morning."

"Morning."

She started walking toward the stairs, then stopped.

"You're always awake early."

Adrian looked at her.

"So are you."

Mara shrugged.

"I have school."

Adrian said nothing.

She studied him for a moment.

"You don't go to work?"

"I do."

"Where?"

Adrian's expression remained unreadable.

"Somewhere."

Mara frowned.

"That's not an answer."

"It wasn't meant to be."

For a moment, Mara looked offended.

Then she laughed.

Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

Mara continued down the stairs.

Adrian watched her disappear.

He had seen her around the building several times before. She was different from most children her age. She seemed unusually observant, as though she noticed things other people ignored.

He didn't know much about her family.

And he didn't intend to.

Adrian had spent years making sure other people's lives remained separate from his own.

That was how he survived.

That was how he stayed safe.

But as he closed his apartment door, he had no idea that the girl who had just walked down those stairs would soon become the most important person in his life.

He had no idea that Mara Bennett would change everything.

And he certainly had no idea that the quiet life he had worked so hard to protect was already beginning to disappear.
