The Day I Found You

I used to believe that the most important moments in life announced themselves.

I thought there would be some kind of warning—a feeling in my chest, a strange dream, or a voice telling me that everything was about to change.

I was wrong.

Sometimes, life changes quietly.

Sometimes, the person who will become the most important part of your story walks into your life on an ordinary morning, while you're thinking about completely ordinary things.

That was how I met him.

My name is Amelia Carter, and before that day, I was perfectly comfortable being alone.

I wasn't unhappy. At least, that's what I told myself.

I had my small circle of friends, my family, my books, and the familiar routine of school. Every morning, I woke up at six, prepared my things, ate breakfast quickly, and walked to the bus stop before the streets became too crowded.

It wasn't an exciting life.

But it was safe.

And after everything I had been through, safe was enough.

That Monday morning began like every other Monday.

The sky was gray, and the rain had left the streets covered with small puddles. I stood beneath the roof of the bus stop, holding my school bag against my chest while watching cars pass by.

My best friend, Lily, was late again.

She was always late.

I checked my phone.

7:12 a.m.

"She's going to make me late," I whispered.

"Who?"

I turned around.

A boy was standing behind me.

I had never seen him before.

He was wearing the same school uniform as me, but something about him looked different. His dark hair was slightly messy, as if he had run his fingers through it too many times. His school bag hung over one shoulder, and he looked strangely calm despite the rain.

"Your friend," he said.

I stared at him.

"How did you know I was talking about my friend?"

He smiled slightly.

"You looked annoyed."

I almost laughed.

"Maybe I'm always annoyed."

"Then I guess I arrived at the right time."

There was something about the way he said it that made me smile.

Before I could answer, the bus arrived.

Everyone rushed forward.

I stepped onto the bus and found an empty seat near the window. A few seconds later, someone sat beside me.

I looked over.

It was him.

"You again?" I asked.

"Looks like it."

"There are plenty of empty seats."

"I know."

"Then why sit here?"

He looked out the window.

"I don't know."

For some reason, that answer stayed in my mind.

We didn't talk for the rest of the ride.

But I kept noticing him.

The way he looked outside.

The way he tapped his fingers against his knee.

The way his expression changed whenever someone mentioned the school.

There was something he was hiding.

I just didn't know what.

When we arrived at school, I got off the bus without saying goodbye.

I thought that would be the end of it.

I was wrong again.

"Amelia!"

I stopped.

Nobody called my name like that except Lily.

I turned around and saw her running toward me, almost falling because she was carrying too many books.

"Where were you?" I asked.

"Sleeping."

"You were supposed to meet me at seven."

"I know."

"You are impossible."

She laughed.

Then she noticed the boy walking behind me.

Her eyes widened.

"Who is that?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know him?"

"I just met him."

Lily looked at me suspiciously.

"You just met a handsome boy on the bus and didn't ask his name?"

I rolled my eyes.

"Why would I?"

"Because you're alive?"

Before I could respond, the boy walked past us.

Lily watched him disappear through the school entrance.

Then she looked at me.

"You're interested."

"I'm not."

"You smiled."

"I smile."

"Not like that."

I ignored her and walked toward our classroom.

I didn't know it then, but that conversation would become something I remembered for years.

Because that was the morning I met Ethan.

And that was the morning my ordinary life began to change.

By lunchtime, I discovered that Ethan wasn't just another student.

He was new.

He had transferred from another city.

Nobody knew much about him.

Some students said his family was wealthy.

Others said he had moved because of problems at his old school.

There were even rumors that he had gotten into a serious fight.

I didn't believe any of them.

Rumors were just stories people created when they didn't know the truth.

I was sitting with Lily when Ethan entered the cafeteria.

Almost immediately, everyone noticed him.

He didn't seem to care.

He walked toward an empty table and sat alone.

Lily leaned closer to me.

"Go talk to him."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I don't know him."

"You met him this morning."

"Exactly."

She sighed.

"You are impossible."

I smiled.

Then Ethan looked toward us.

Our eyes met.

For a moment, everything around me seemed to disappear.

He smiled.

I looked away.

My heart was beating faster than it should have.

I didn't understand why.

I barely knew him.

And yet, somehow, I had the strange feeling that meeting him wasn't an accident.

Maybe that sounds foolish.

Maybe it was.

But sometimes your heart notices something before your mind is ready to understand it.

After lunch, I returned to class.

There was a folded piece of paper on my desk.

I opened it.

Three words were written inside.

"Thank you, Amelia."

I looked around the classroom.

Nobody was watching me.

Then I noticed Ethan standing near the doorway.

He gave me a small smile before walking away.

I stared at the note again.

I had no idea what I had done to deserve his thanks.

I didn't know his story.

I didn't know his secrets.

I didn't know that behind that quiet smile was a past that would eventually collide with mine.

All I knew was that, for the first time in a long time, I was curious about someone.

And maybe curiosity was the beginning of everything.

Because sometimes, the person you least expect becomes the person you can never forget.

And sometimes...

the day you find someone is also the day you begin finding yourself.
