THE HAND THAT HELD FREEDOM

Where other boys were going hunting and catching fish, Jatra had to collect fruits, sticks, and herbs with the children. Where others enjoyed and laughed around campfires, Jatra spent time with the trees. He was always discriminated against because he was born with a disability—one of his hands was paralyzed. People never saw his kindness or patience; they only saw his weakness.

​One day, his father went hunting and never came back. When Jatra was 13 years old, his mother also passed away because of an undiscovered illness. Life gave him many difficulties, but he never complained. He treated the forest and his tribal people as his family; they were everything to him. However, people thought he was weak and that they did not need people like him. They believed he was bad luck for them. Slowly, with time, he also started believing that he was weak, a burden, and bad luck.

​Some years later, when he was almost thirty-two years old, some strange people came into their forest. They announced that from now on, the forest and its products were our property. No one had the right to cut trees, hunt animals, or collect forest produce. They were not allowed to roam in the forest. They had to pay tax and work for the invaders government as laborers. When the tribals obeyed them, the invaders started destroying their villages.

​Suddenly, their lives changed completely. For Jatra, it was too painful to see his family living like this. Their dignity was taken away and their peaceful lives were ruined.

​One day, they decided they could no longer remain silent. They protested against them and refused to pay taxes. They returned to their old ways—hunting animals, cutting trees, collecting, living freely, and protecting the forest. When the invaders learned of this, they attacked the villages, beating people and burning homes. Everyone started running to save their lives; a stampede spread.

​A invaders officer was about to shoot a child. When Jatra saw this, he stopped running. He took an axe with his working hand and ran forward. He struck the officer's hand with the axe. The gun fell from his hand, and the officer screamed in pain.

​Inspired by Jatra's courage, the tribals fought back. A fierce struggle followed. Though Jatra got injured, he did not stop. Pain no longer mattered; what mattered was life, dignity, and truth.

​That day, Jatra realized something he had ignored for years—strength is not measured by body, but by courage. He had never been weak; he had only believed the lie told by others.

​Jatra saved the child and was chosen to be their leader. The tribals also realized their mistake and the unfairness with which they had treated him. From a quiet man who once doubted himself, he became the most respected and loved person in his tribe. He fought not only for his people, but for freedom itself.

​Standing beneath the same trees where he once felt small, Jatra finally understood: he had always been strong. He had just been waiting for the right moment to believe it.
