Summary

He was a powerful British Lord, sent to rule India. She was a beautiful native girl he was never supposed to love. Driven by a dark, feral possessiveness that defied his crown, his culture, and his own blood, Lord Vincent Hawthorne tore his entire legacy to shreds with his bare hands, trading his family's expectations and his position within the Empire for the fierce, burning need to protect the woman who had already colonized his soul. Their love was a raging wildfire that refused to be contained. From the scandalous streets of Calcutta to the cold, judging drawing rooms of England, society followed them with whispers, hatred, and condemnation. Yet behind the locked doors of the Government House Library, Lord Vincent worshipped her skin with a hunger that defied every societal rule, and together they forged an unbreakable bond of absolute, untamed devotion.

The Governor and the Native Girl

1894, Calcutta

Inside the grand library of the Government House, the morning hours passed in a quiet blur. Mridula sat at her usual oak table, her fingers turning the delicate pages of an old manuscript while Hari Mohan Chatterjee and Mr. Pembroke worked quietly nearby.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors swung wide open.

A sharp hush fell over the entire hall. Lord Vincent , the 27 years old governor of Bengal , stepped inside.

Instantly, every archivist, clerk, and assistant sprang to their feet, bowing low. Mridula stood with them, her eyes fixed respectfully on the floor.

Vincent walked down the central aisle, his gaze sweeping over the staff before he spoke.

"Everyone," his deep, authoritative voice carried effortlessly across the room, "you may retire for luncheon. You are dismissed."

For a moment, nobody moved out of sheer surprise.

Then, murmuring quietly, Mr. Pembroke, Hari Mohan, Thomas Wilkins, and the attendants gathered their things and began walking toward the exit doors.

Mridula packed her small notebook and stood up to follow them out.

But as she reached the end of her aisle, Vincent stepped smoothly into her path, shielding her retreat with his broad frame.

She stopped abruptly, her breath catching as she found her way entirely blocked. Around them, the departing staff caught sight of the Governor standing intimately before her.

Heads lowered quickly in discretion, and nobody dared utter a single word as they hurried out of the library, leaving the great oak doors to click shut behind them.

Mridula looked up at him, her heart already racing.

"My Lord... why are you doing this?"

Vincent did not answer with words. Instead, he stepped forward.

She instinctively took a step back. He followed.

She stepped back again, her movements growing quicker until the solid oak frame of a tall library bookshelf pressed hard against her lower back, trapping her completely.

Vincent closed the remaining distance, invading her space until his chest nearly brushed hers.

He leaned down, his face coming right beside her ear, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic murmur as he began to recite a poem, verse by verse.

"Kiss me as though the world must end," he whispered against her skin, his breath warm and sending a violent shiver down her spine, "When Heaven and Earth no more contend; Though stars should fade and oceans rise, Lose thyself within mine eager eyes."

Mridula’s cheeks burned crimson. Hearing her own secret poetic words spoken aloud by him, so raw and sensual, made her head spin with shyness.

She tried to turn her face away, but he held her gaze, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding hunger.

"Kiss me while the mountains bow," Vincent continued, his voice wrapping around her like velvet, "And Time forgets his solemn vow; Though kingdoms fall and empires cease, Within thine arms I find my peace."

His lips drifted closer to hers, hovering mere fractions of an inch away, his voice dropping to a husky cadence.

"Press close thy lips to mine once more," he murmured, "Ere Death shall close the eternal door; Let every trembling breath we share Outlive the winds that rend the air."

Panic and overwhelming desire warred inside her. Mridula pressed both palms flat against his solid chest, pushing with all her might.

"My Lord, please..."

He did not move a single millimeter. His body was a wall of unyielding strength.

"Though thunder shake the vaulted sky," Vincent whispered relentlessly, his eyes never leaving hers, "And all creation seem to die, Still let thy kiss my soul enfold, More dear than crown or gathered gold."

As he spoke, his hand slid down from her waist, sliding firmly against the delicate fabric of her golden saree, resting upon her bare, warm tummy.

Mridula gasped, her entire body trembling violently at the intimate touch.

"My Lord..." she whispered, her voice a breathless plea.

He kept reciting, his hand melting against her soft skin, his fingers pressing slightly into her waist.

"If all the world be turned to flame, Still let my lips breathe but thy name; For in thy kiss I gladly find The end of fear, of grief, of time."

Mridula twisted softly in his grip, her hands gripping his coat as she tried to pull away from the overwhelming wave of heat radiating from him.

"My Lord, please leave me..."

Vincent tightened his grip around her waist, pulling her flush against his hard frame.

The sudden contact of his warm, powerful male body pressed directly against hers sent a shockwave of intense, dizzying excitement through her veins, mingled with deep, paralyzing shyness.

He leaned down directly toward her lips, his voice dropping to a final, desperate whisper.

"And should the final hour draw near, With darkness veiling every sphere, Kiss me, my Love, and let us be One heart through all eternity."

With a sudden, fierce motion, he pressed her waist closer still, making her feel every inch of his solid, burning presence.

And then, he could hold back no longer.

Vincent captured her lips in a deep, primal, consuming kiss.

Mridula’s eyes flew wide in shock, her initial resistance meeting the absolute, overwhelming force of his passion.

He kissed her hard, his lips parting hers as his tongue pushed inward, claiming her mouth completely. For a fleeting second, she tried to pull back, but the sheer intensity of his embrace swept away all her defenses.

Unable to fight the tide any longer, her resistance melted. Her lips parted fully under his, letting him in.

Vincent groaned softly against her mouth, drinking in her breath, tasting her as if she were the sweetest nectar on earth.

He drank deep of her saliva, his hands gripping her tighter, his kiss growing more desperate, more demanding, utterly intoxicated by the reality of having her in his arms.

It was a passionate, untamed storm of a kiss that bridged the vast divide between their worlds, leaving Mridula breathless, trembling, and entirely lost in the intoxicating heat of his embrace.

The kiss was a tempest that consumed every rational thought, leaving Mridula breathless, her chest heaving as she clung to the lapels of his coat just to keep herself from sliding to the marble floor.

Sensing the desperate flutter of her pulse and the way her lips parted weakly in search of air, Vincent finally eased his pressure.

He pulled back just an inch, his own breathing ragged and harsh, giving her a brief moment to draw in a trembling, shuddering gulp of oxygen.

Yet the primal hunger inside him refused to settle. Before she could recover her senses, his lips drifted downward from her mouth, tracing a hot, searing path along her jawline and straight to the delicate curve of her neck.

Mridula’s head fell back against the wooden shelf, a soft, helpless gasp escaping her lips.

"My Lord... My Lord, please stop this... it is wrong..." she murmured, her voice laced with a intoxicating mixture of shyness, panic, and a dizzying, feverish heat that clouded her mind.

He paid her pleas no mind. Driven by an absolute, unbridled madness for her, Vincent pressed his lips against her sensitive skin in a fierce, possessive hunger, kissing her neck like a man starving in a wasteland.

Mridula’s fingers tangled helplessly in his hair, her voice breaking into a soft, trembling chant.

"My Lord... My Lord, please..."

With unyielding focus, Vincent shifted his position.

Firmly, he turned her around so that her front faced the tall rows of books, bending her slightly forward against the shelf.

With deliberate movements, his hand reached behind her, sliding the soft fabric of her silk pallu aside to expose the delicate expanse of her upper back.

The fine cotton blouse beneath was fastened with a single cord knot at the top and a neat row of small buttons running down the spine. As his warm fingers brushed against the exposed, soft skin of her back, a violent tremor raced down her spine.

She felt entirely unmoored, burning with a frantic, overwhelming sensation that left her completely high on his touch.

Mridula pressed her palms against the wooden shelf, her voice dropping into a desperate, pleading whisper.

"My Lord..."

Vincent pressed a series of hot, lingering kisses directly against her bare spine, his voice a low, raspy growl against her skin.

"You desire this as much as I do, Mridula. You long for me, though you would never confess it. Your verses have revealed more than you intended."

With a sudden, fluid motion, he straightened her up, so her back was pressed flat against his solid chest.

He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, pinning her against him as his lips brushed the shell of her ear.

"Tell me you desire me, Mridula," he murmured, his voice dripping with raw desire. "Tell me. Tell me you would have me awaken the woman within you."

Mridula squeezed her eyes shut, a tear slipping down her cheek as she shook her head frantically.

"My Lord... those poems were born of fantasy..."

Without warning, he spun her around again so she faced him, pressing her body flush against his, chest to chest, heart pounding wildly against heart.

"Then let me make that fantasy a reality," he whispered fiercely.

Tears spilled over Mridula's lashes, her voice breaking entirely as she looked up at him in sheer despair.

"I told you... I only want my husband to do this."

Vincent looked down at her, his jaw tightening with a fierce, absolute determination.

"I am your husband."

"No... you are not," she sobbed, shaking her head.

"I will make you my wife," Vincent declared impatiently, his eyes burning with intensity. "I will be your husband."

"That's not possible," Mridula wept, the harsh reality of their worlds crashing down on her.

She lifted her hands, pressing them flat against his chest as she looked up into his face, her voice dropping into a broken, terrified plea.

"Please... don't take my virginity."

The raw, unfiltered terror in her voice struck Vincent like a physical blow.

The frantic heat in his veins vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, crushing wave of guilt. He looked at her tear-stained face, realizing with sickening clarity just how far his impatience had driven him.

He had terrified her. He had pushed her to the absolute edge.

Slowly, his arms relaxed, and he stepped back, creating space between them.

Mridula crumpled inward, wrapping her arms tightly around her body in a defensive, protective shield, her shoulders shaking with heavy, silent sobs.

"My family and my society... they will throw me away..."

Vincent stood motionless, his hands dropping to his sides, his expression a mask of pure anguish.

"But I love you," he said, his voice breaking with a vulnerability she had never heard before. "I cannot keep myself from touching you. God help me... I love you beyond all reason. What am I to do? I love you so."

"Forget me," she whispered fiercely through her tears.

Vincent’s jaw set into a hard, unyielding line.

"Impossible."

Mridula took another step back, hugging herself tighter, her eyes flashing with a desperate defiance born of self-preservation.

"Don't ever touch me again... or else I will never come to the Government House."

Even as she spoke the threat, her heart twisted with a sharp, agonizing pain, because deep down, she craved his touch more than life itself. But she had no other weapon left to protect her honor.

Vincent looked at her, his heart sinking heavily in his chest. He was utterly disheartened.

"You may rule Bengal as you please, My Lord"—, Mridula continued, her voice trembling violently, "but not my body."

Vincent stared at her, the fight draining from his eyes, replaced by a quiet, solemn resolve.

"You will not let me touch you because I am not your husband, is that it?"

He paused, drawing a slow breath.

"Very well. I shall marry you."

Mridula kept crying, the words sounding like an impossible, distant dream in a world that would never permit it.

Vincent stepped forward slightly, his voice softening into a gentle, repentant plea.

"Forgive me... for being so impatient."

He watched her for a long moment before offering a faint, quiet suggestion.

"Would you join me for luncheon?"

Mridula shook her head fiercely, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.

"No."

Vincent’s expression fell further, a deep shadow of defeat crossing his features, but he merely nodded.

"Indeed."

Without another word, he turned away, walking slowly toward the heavy double doors and disappearing out of the library, leaving the grand hall entirely silent.

Left alone amidst the towering shelves of ancient books, Mridula sank slowly down onto the cold marble floor, pulling her knees to her chest as she buried her face in her arms and wept bitterly.
