Chapter One :- The Envelope
Sofia ran through Via Solferino, the restless, uneven rhythm of her shoes striking the ancient cobblestones.
She was terribly late for work, and the oppressive heat of the early Milanese summer hung heavy in the air, pressing down on her chest like a physical burden.
Hurrying past the crowded outer terraces of the cafes, she deliberately avoided the relaxed gazes of the patrons lounging beneath the shaded umbrellas. Instead, her eyes remained fixed on the massive iron gate of the newspaper building looming at the far end of the street.
The structure rose like an architectural masterpiece, beautifully embodying the rich heritage of the Italian Liberty style, its elegant facade and soaring windows standing guarded by that imposing iron gate.
The moment her feet crossed the threshold, a sudden refreshing wave of cold air from the cooling system struck her.
Catching her breath for just a fleeting second, she continued her ascent up the sweeping marble staircase.
She quickened her pace toward the rear section, where a row of modern glass offices stretched directly above the old printing press floor, a captivating contrast that seamlessly wedded the spirit of the past with the refined sophistication of the present.
She collapsed into the chair behind her desk, struggling to steady her erratic breathing, and immediately adjusted the air conditioner vent to direct the cool breeze toward her.
With a swift spontaneous movement, she gathered her hair from her neck and pinned it up quickly with a pen, trying to restore a semblance of order to the chaos of her appearance.
Slipping off her shoes, she took her aching feet between her hands to massage them gently, attempting to erase the toll of the grueling hours she had spent standing since dawn.
She had been posted outside the Ministry of Justice, waiting for the Minister of Justice, recently exposed in leaked documents for pushing through a suspicious pardon for an influential figure deeply entangled in a major corruption scandal shaking Milan to its core.
All her efforts had been in vain.
His personal bodyguards had formed an impenetrable wall, denying her even a single step forward.
When the crisp cool air finally brought her some relief, she rose and walked toward the coffee machine to brew a cup of strong concentrated black coffee.
She hoped its bitterness would dispel her lingering sluggishness. Returning to the comfortable leather sofa, she crossed her legs and rested her head backward, stealing a few fleeting moments of relaxation.
The serenity did not last long.
The office door suddenly slammed open with sheer violence.
Her manager Enzo strode in, his rigid features and sharp eyes instantly judging her relaxed posture. He hurled his mocking words at her.
"Should I bring you a mattress to sleep on Miss Sofia"
Sofia straightened in her seat, sitting upright, and spoke in a tone she struggled to keep calm and formal.
"Good morning, Mr. Enzo"
Enzo marched straight toward her desk and sat behind it, his expression frozen.
He shot her a look of contempt before speaking.
"I hope this lateness of yours brings some actual value. Did you manage to interview Minister Alio, or have you returned to me empty handed as usual"
Sofia sighed, maintaining the steadiness of her gaze as she answered with an honesty tinged with frustration.
"I couldnt. His guards formed a tight unyielding barrier around him and prevented me from getting anywhere near him."
A cynical smile played on Enzo's lips, carrying that specific brand of malice he had perfected so well. Standing up coldly, he said.
"Exactly as I expected. Based on this, you will not be going home early today. There is a mountain of overdue editorial work and you will handle all of it by yourself."
Without waiting for her reply, he turned and walked out, leaving behind the harsh echo of the slammed door that shook the entire glass office.
Sofia muttered his mocking words back with a quiet sarcastic undertone, deep irritation written across her face.
She released a slow breath, then picked up her mobile phone and called the mechanic to inquire about her car, which had been left at the repair shop for days.
The last thing she needed today was this exhausting running around.
To her relief, the mechanic answered and reassured her that the car was completely ready.
Feeling a massive weight lift from her shoulders, she requested that he deliver the car to the front of the newspaper building, as she wouldn’t be able to leave the office early today. Fortunately, he agreed.
By five in the evening, the staff began leaving one by one, until the once-busy corridors gradually emptied and a stillness settled over the building.
During that time Enzo burst into her office once more before leaving.
He dumped a massive stack of journalistic articles onto her desk, insisting in a dry stern tone that she edit proofread and format them for both the digital and print platforms.
He warned her not to dare head home before finishing every single page.
While he spoke in his raspy grating voice, Sofia surrendered to a silent trance, staring at him with cold detachment.
He was in his sixties, short, stout, and bald, a man who excelled at nothing but instilling despair in others.
He constantly went out of his way to antagonize her, always reminding her of her failures and threatening to fire her at the end of every argument.
She felt an overwhelming urge to laugh right in his face, but she restrained herself with immense effort, clinging to the last shreds of her composure.
After a relentless wave of repeated threats, Enzo finally left, and the office was freed from his suffocating presence.
She let out a long breath of relief, only to feel an intense hunger take over her.
Reaching for her phone, she ordered a fresh pizza along with a Caprese salad through a delivery app.
Exhausting days always demanded something comforting to restore her strength.
Half an hour later the order arrived, and she ate with an unrestrained appetite.
Afterward, she poured herself another cup of coffee, then sat back before her desk prepared to face the mountain of paperwork.
She worked for hours on end without a hint of fatigue.
Despite the demanding nature of journalism, she loved every part of it, breathing its every detail and considering it the greatest passion of her life.
What truly pained her, however, was that the right opportunity had not yet presented itself to prove her worth and crush the arrogance of her despicable manager.
Her phone rang suddenly cutting through the absolute stillness of the space.
Lifting her head to look out the large glass window, she was startled to find that night had already draped its black shroud over the streets of Milan.
Time had slipped through her fingers unnoticed.
It was the mechanic informing her that he had arrived and parked her car right outside the main gate.
She rushed downstairs slipping off her painful high heels to walk completely barefoot, silently cursing the strict formal dress code Enzo forced upon her.
After inspecting the car with relief, she took the keys, thanked the mechanic, and headed back up to her office with lighter steps.
But when she sat back at her desk, her breath caught.
A dark brown envelope was neatly placed on its surface, an envelope that was absolutely not there before she went downstairs.
Adrenaline surged violently through her veins.
She sprang up and rushed out of her office scanning the dark silent corridors calling out into the emptiness.
"Is anyone there?"
No one answered but the echo of her own voice bouncing through the deserted building.
Swallowing hard, she retreated into her office with wary steps, her hand slowly extending toward the mysterious envelope.
She turned it over in her hands searching for a sender name or address but found nothing except a single line written in a jagged trembling script To Sofia Moretti.
With trembling fingers, driven by a mixture of bewilderment and burning curiosity, Sofia opened the envelope.
Questions flooded her mind.
Who had left it here? How had they gotten inside? And why had they not simply placed it in her hands while she was still there?
She slowly drew the papers from inside the envelope.
The moment the folded pages opened, the distinct scent of paper filled her senses.
Within mere seconds, her eyes widened in a paralyzing shock that left her frozen in place.
Her gaze remained fixed on the lines before her.
The papers in her hands were no ordinary documents.
They were highly dangerous files capable of shaking the balance of power and unleashing the fires of hell upon the De Santis family empire.
At that very moment Sofia realized that her quiet life had come to an end forever.
She had just stepped into the most perilous chapter of her life.
For this was her golden opportunity the one she had been waiting for since entering the world of journalism an opportunity she would seize with every ounce of strength she possessed.

Re-reading this chapter changes the whole optic. The first time around, Enzo is just an irritating tyrant ruining a Friday. But digging into the hidden layers now... is he really just a petty boss? What if burying Sofia under that mountain of overdue work was a calculated move to keep her alone in the office? And the mechanic. Calling exactly when the envelope was dropped? The timing is far too sharp for a coincidence. Was he really fixing a car, or was he acting as a spotter to pull her out of the room? Sofia is so obsessed with her ambition and taking down her boss that she doesn’t see she is already a pawn in a much bigger game. If she hadn't taken off those uncomfortable heels, she would have gone downstairs faster and might have bumped straight into the messenger. It is fascinating how small choices lock the trap. Great to dive back into this text!
You’ll definitely discover in the upcoming chapters whether Enzo and the mechanic were involved from the very beginning.
But there is one thing that remains certain: Enzo
is still an irritating tyrant who manages to ruin Sofia’s day every single time.
I loved how rereading the chapter made you come up with new theories and question the timing of everything. That is exactly what makes going back through the story so fascinating.
