Chapter 10:LEARNING TO LET GO
There are some things in life that we hold onto long after they have stopped bringing us happiness.
Sometimes we hold on because of love.
Sometimes because of memories.
Sometimes because we are afraid that letting go means everything we went through was for nothing.
I have learned that letting go does not erase the past. It simply means accepting that some things were never meant to stay the same forever.
For a long time, I wanted answers.
I wanted to understand why certain people changed, why some relationships became difficult, and why things I hoped would last sometimes left me feeling empty.
I kept looking for explanations because I thought understanding everything would finally give me peace.
But I discovered that not every question has an answer.
Sometimes you have to make peace with what you will never understand.
I am learning not to force things anymore.
If someone wants to be in my life, I want them to choose to be there—not because I begged, chased, or convinced them.
If an opportunity doesn't work out, I will allow myself to be disappointed, but I will try again.
If someone walks away, I will grieve if I need to, but I will not follow them until I forget who I am.
Letting go is not weakness.
Sometimes it is the strongest thing a person can do.
I am also learning to let go of the version of myself who believed she had to keep everyone happy.
I don't have to explain every decision.
I don't have to apologize for having feelings.
I don't have to prove that I deserve respect.
And I don't have to shrink myself so someone else can feel comfortable.
There is still so much I want to accomplish.
I want to work again. I want to become independent. I want to keep writing my story. I want to experience new places, meet new people, and create memories that belong to me.
I want to laugh without pretending.
I want to sleep peacefully.
I want to wake up without carrying yesterday's pain into today.
Most of all, I want peace.
Maybe letting go is not about losing people.
Maybe sometimes it is about finally gaining yourself.
And as I continue this journey, I am learning to release what I cannot control and make room for the life that is waiting for me.
I don't know exactly what tomorrow will bring.
But for the first time, I am not as afraid of it.
I am learning to trust myself.
And that, perhaps, is one of the greatest things I have ever given myself. ❤️
