Chapter 1
~
« Finally. My dream is becoming a reality. »
I confidently push open the airport's heavy sliding doors and take in the view.
We've arrived.
“—We've arrived,” Lynh whispers in my ear with a smile.
I take a small step back.
“—You read my mind,” I reply with a smile.
Japan.
That's what I've been dreaming about since middle school. The culture, the language, the landscapes... It's finally become my reality, and all these new sensations seem to be filling a void inside me.
I take a deep breath.
I start running, suitcase in hand and headband around my head, like a child running around a playground. The cool air brushes against my cheeks, carrying the gentle scent of the cherry blossoms that are so characteristic of the region.
I turn around to look at Lynh, who is approaching me.
“—Can you feel it? We're free here!” I exclaim, bouncing on my feet.
“—So I'm guessing you're not going to listen to me if I tell you to walk?” Lynh chuckles.
I pretend to sulk, then grab his hand and shake it.
“—Come on, just go with it! Don't you want to run to the taxi with me?”
“—No. I'd rather just walk. I told you.”
I let out a sarcastic sigh and give in.
“—Ugh, you're really slow sometimes.”
“—I'm not slow. Miss is just hyperactive.”
“—Who even calls you miss anymore?”
He laughs and speeds up, getting ahead of me.
Lynh has always been like this:
Calm and thoughtful, but also playful and confident. In a way, I've always found him impossible to read; as if he switches into jokester mode whenever he doesn't want to talk about something.
Besides, even though I've known him since kindergarten, he still keeps a mysterious side of himself hidden, even from me.
Our families lived in neighboring apartments in the same building, so our parents quickly got to know each other—and so did we.
Because he has always been by my side without me even realizing it, I have never imagined my life without him. That's why I told him about my dream of moving to Japan.
But honestly, I was surprised when he calmly replied,
“Sounds good. I'm in.”
With that little smirk of his.
I still don't understand why he decided to come with me, but whatever the reason, I'm happy that my best friend is here for me.
There's no doubt about that!
