Dinner Invitation
Rose woke to the sound of the knocking at her door. For a moment she wanted to ignore it. Either it was her mom, sis or bro. She did not like responding to any of their knocks because knocking meant being nice and being nice meant that they wanted something. Her family always had the habit of barging into her room in the morning. Even this small attic like room was not spared regularly. This routine was almost part of her unconsciousness now. Rose slightly groaned in response to their rapid assault to the door:
“Rosie, get up right now. There’s something really important that we need to talk about.”
Her mom came in and took the space at the edge of Rosie’s bed while Rosie didn’t budge;
“Didn't you have a party to attend too? Just go and attend it, I can manage to get something to eat.”
Her mom shifted in bed while Rose hid her face in her pillow. After a moment her mom replied:
“I actually wanted you to go instead…”
Rose’s head shot up at that.
“I gladly have no interest.”
Rose replied with the most distasteful mood while her mom stood up and went on explaining:
“It is just one dinner. I cannot go myself. Rory’s exam is coming up and she needs support!”
Rory was her elder sister. Rose looked up and saw her own research papers scattered around the room. In last night’s research study, she lost her reading glasses somewhere. Her cupboard filled with study materials was open. Some of the sticky notes had gone missing in the last few hours of her research session. Her mom saw her line of gaze and quickly replied:
“It’s okay if you don’t want to go, I can tell them that we cannot make it”
‘Seriously? Give me an option to make me feel like I have a choice!’ Rose thought, she quickly shook her head and replied:
“I will go.”
With that she went to the restroom to freshen up for the day.
