O1
Never in his life had Kevin expected that one day he would open his eyes again. He realized he had returned to his high school days. Especially since just yesterday he had been at a bar with his friends, celebrating his twenty-fourth birthday. If he had expected that, he probably wouldn't have drunk so much alcohol.
But he had no idea, so he woke up with a massive headache, accompanied by confusion. Although, in truth, he didn't mind returning to the old days. However, they weren't the same as they appeared in his memory, which puzzled him a bit.
He was absolutely certain that the world he lived in didn't have magic. So it's no wonder that for a while he thought he was completely crazy, or-worse-in a coma, and what he was experiencing wasn't real. Confused by this revelation, it took him some time to realize that it was true, that he wasn't in a coma at all, and that it wasn't a dream, but a true reality.
This tormented him deeply for a long time, but, as we all know, there was no turning back. True, when Kevin was younger, he had dreamed of being able to use magic. Which, as we know, was normal at that time, because everyone dreamed of something like that. However, he realized it was impossible, until now.
For the life of him, he couldn't remember anything else right after he met a certain woman. Although, in truth, he wasn't sure if it was a woman or a man dressed as a woman. And even more so, what the person in the strange clothes had said to him, but he couldn't remember that either.
No matter what he tried, it was to no avail, because it was as if those memories had never existed from the start. Which, as we know, was impossible, because then why did he remember exchanging words with that person? Unless that person didn't want him to remember what they'd talked about.
It was very understandable if she didn't want him to find her or him now. And he probably would have if he remembered anything about her and what they'd talked about. Which doesn't mean he wasn't angry with that person for sending him into an alternate world without any prior preparation. A world so familiar to him, yet so very different from the one he remembered.
This meant Kevin had to learn everything from scratch, because most of what he'd known was useless. This irritated him greatly, but as we know, there was nothing he could do about it. Over time, he came to terms with being forced to live in a world he didn't truly know.
All he had to do was absorb and assimilate the necessary information so as not to attract unnecessary attention. Which, as we know, wasn't as easy as he initially thought. He had to somehow obtain the necessary information without risking revealing that he was someone completely different.
Phew... He was the same person, but he lived in a completely different world... Until he started wondering what had happened to the „Kevin" from this world? Had he gone to his world, had he traded places with him? Had he simply ceased to exist, and thus he had taken his place for some unknown reason?
But he couldn't verify that, let alone find out. Even if there were a way to find out, he wouldn't be able to. He wasn't going to end up in some magical laboratory, he was one hundred percent sure of that.
Especially since no one would probably believe him if he told them he came from a world without magic. In the worst-case scenario, he'd end up in some magical asylum. And, as we all know, he certainly wouldn't want that, but as we all know, anything was possible.
In any case, he could focus on what was yet to come. And for some time now, Kevin had begun to notice that he had the ability to blend into the background. So much so that even the teachers couldn't remember his name. Not to mention that to the other students, he seemed completely invisible.
Which, as we know, was absurd, but they didn't understand it anyway, and he didn't have the energy to deal with them. Consequently, there was no way he could get a girlfriend, or even a boyfriend. Over time, however, she got used to it, though deep down, he truly hated himself for it.
Because he wanted to have a normal school life like any other boy. He could only dream of it at the time, and now he had this strange ability. Of course, he tried to fight it, but it was to no avail, only increasing his frustration. Especially since the day of summoning his Familiar was getting closer.
And therefore, he might not summon it at all, because the teachers and the administration would forget about its existence. Which, as we know, was very real, considering how much they'd forgotten about his existence. Truth be told, he'd long ago accepted the fact that he wouldn't find his soulmate.
So he didn't really expect anything to change. He walked as he always did, every day at the same time. Down the hallway, heading back from the school cafeteria. He counted down the last minutes before the next lesson, which he somewhat hated. Kevin sighed quietly, one last time, looking down at the book in his hands.
Looking intently at her, he paid absolutely no attention to what was happening around him. Actually, he didn't need to, because almost no one paid him any attention, since he was invisible to others. Which made it easier for him to stroll freely. He had practically no friends, except for tending his private garden, which was the only thing that brought her immense joy.
He devoted the rest of his free time to extracurricular activities, as there was nothing else he could do. Especially since he had to make up for everything so no one would suspect he wasn't the Levin they knew. And then he wouldn't have been laughing about it too much.
That's because he'd have to explain what he'd experienced and what he doubted, just to be believed. He couldn't really believe what he'd been through, let alone convince other people that he wasn't making it up. He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he didn't notice two second-graders approaching him.
„Ouch!," Kevin muttered after a moment, as two second-graders bumped into him as if they hadn't even noticed him.
He fell to his knees, and the book he'd been holding moments ago flew out of his hands and landed on the floor right in front of him. He only sighed quietly, not expecting a single word from them like "I'm sorry," because that would be too good to be true.
He was just about to get up from his knees when he saw someone approach him and extend a hand to help him up from the floor. At that moment, he could only assume the legs belonged to a male. Although he couldn't be 100% sure.
Something inside him told him that fate would finally smile upon him. Although he had no idea why he'd thought that, he couldn't take those thoughts back. Therefore, he could only hope that this was meant to be.
„Are you okay?," Kevin heard words after a moment, words he hadn't expected at all, much less the hand that was pointed at him.
„No, I'm okay, everything's fine," Kevin replied after a moment, his hand pulling him up from his knees.
„Are you sure? The way they bumped into you looked kind of menacing, almost as if they hadn't seen you!," he said after a moment, and he could detect a hint of concern in his tone.
„I'm used to moments like this. Honestly, it's my specialty that hardly anyone notices me, which sometimes gets to me, but thank you for your concern!," Kevin said after a moment, his gaze finally meeting his.
At first, he thought there was something wrong with him and he began to lose sight of people, but it turned out the boy was simply taller than him. While he was growing taller, Kevin was only shoulder-high. For a second, Kevin was sure he was dealing with a girl because of his delicate facial features.
Not to mention his long, chin-length, platinum blond hair. And even more so, he couldn't tear his gaze away from the boy's blue eyes, adorned with unearthly lashes that any girl would envy. It felt like he'd seen him somewhere before, but he couldn't quite remember where.
It took him a moment to realize what he'd just done. It was because he'd started mentally writing arias about this wonderful man. Which, frankly, was unlike him. So he quickly looked away, so as not to look like an idiot.
He felt terrible about it, but on the other hand, it was the first time he'd encountered something like this. That's why he didn't notice what he'd just done so quickly. He'd only learn about it a moment later, and for the moment, he was completely unaware.
„Is something wrong? Surely something's bothering you, are you so red?," he asked again, moving dangerously close to him and touching his forehead with his smooth hand to check if he had a fever.
