Chapter 1: TWO WINGS

Heaven was unlike anything that existed on Earth. It had no sunrise or sunset, no morning that slowly awakened the world and no night that eventually swallowed it in darkness. Light existed there eternally, spreading across an endless sky of white clouds and golden radiance, while enormous celestial structures rose beyond the horizon like monuments built for beings far older than humanity.

Everything in Heaven had its place.

The angels who inhabited the celestial realm were divided into nine distinct choirs, each established according to its authority and purpose. The Seraphim stood closest to the Throne of the King of Kings, followed by the Cherubim and the Thrones. Beneath them were the Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, and Archangels, while the lowest order consisted of the Angels themselves.

Being part of the Ninth Choir did not make an Angel insignificant. Their authority might have been limited compared to that of the higher choirs, but their purpose was deeply important. Guardian Angels were entrusted with the lives of human beings, watching over them from the moment they were assigned until their duties were complete.

They protected their humans from dangers that could prematurely end their lives, guided them toward opportunities that could change their futures, and sometimes intervened through miracles when divine permission allowed it. However, there was one boundary that even an Angel could not cross.

Free will.

A Guardian Angel could guide a human toward a better choice, but the final decision would always belong to the human.

Arael had always understood that rule.

He simply hated it.

At that particular moment, he was standing beside a small bed in the human world, staring at the young man sleeping beneath a blanket. The curtains were slightly open, allowing the morning sunlight to enter the room, but the light did nothing to disturb the man's peaceful sleep.

Arael glanced at the clock beside the bed before looking back at him.

"You have an examination in less than an hour," he muttered, although he knew perfectly well that the human could not hear him. "You have already ignored your alarm three times, and somehow you are still sleeping as though the entire world has agreed to wait for you."

The human shifted beneath the blanket and turned his back toward Arael.

The Angel stared at him in disbelief.

He had been assigned to this human since the day he was born, and somehow every single day managed to test his patience more than the one before it.

Arael reached toward the alarm clock and tapped it gently. The alarm immediately began ringing again.

The human's hand emerged from beneath the blanket, found the button, and silenced it without the slightest indication that he intended to wake up.

Arael closed his eyes.

"Unbelievable!"

A quiet laugh came from near the window.

Arael turned and found Seraphina standing there, watching the entire scene with an amused expression.

She was also a Guardian Angel, assigned to the same human as Arael. Her long white wings were folded neatly behind her, and the soft golden radiance surrounding her body made her appear almost unreal against the ordinary bedroom.

Then again, she was unreal.

They both were.

"You shouldn't be laughing," Arael said, giving her a disapproving look. "You're supposed to be helping me."

"I am helping you," Seraphina replied, still smiling. "I'm allowing you to discover that getting angry at him isn't going to make him wake up."

Arael looked toward the sleeping human again.

"He has an examination today."

"I know."

"He has already slept through three alarms."

"I know."

"And if he doesn't wake up soon, he'll be late."

"I know."

Arael turned toward her again, his expression becoming increasingly irritated. "Then why are you standing there looking so calm?"

Seraphina tilted her head slightly before answering. "Because being angry won't change anything."

Arael wanted to argue, but he knew she was right.

That was one of the things that frustrated him most about her.

Seraphina was patient.

Far more patient than he could ever imagine becoming.

No matter how many mistakes their human made, she never seemed to lose faith in him. Whenever Arael became frustrated and suggested that perhaps their efforts were pointless, she would simply remind him of their purpose.

They were Guardians.

They were not judges.

They were not meant to force humanity into obedience.

Their responsibility was to guide.

Arael sighed and folded his arms.

"He's impossible!"

Seraphina walked toward the bed and looked down at their sleeping human. "Perhaps he's simply lost."

"We've shown him the way."

"We've shown him possibilities."

"Isn't that basically the same thing?"

"No." She turned toward him, her expression gentle. "Showing someone a path and forcing them to walk it are two completely different things."

Arael remained quiet.

He knew that.

Still, there were times when he wished humans were easier to understand.

Their human had already ignored countless opportunities that could have improved his life. Yesterday, Arael had prevented him from stepping directly into the path of a speeding carriage. Instead of realizing how close he had come to death, the human had simply thanked his "good luck."

The day before that, Seraphina had guided him toward someone who could have helped him solve a serious problem, only for the human to change direction because he suddenly decided he wanted something to eat.

Arael still remembered the look on Seraphina's face when it happened.

She had laughed.

He had nearly lost his mind.

"I don't understand humans," Arael admitted.

Seraphina smiled. "You don't have to understand everything about them."

"Then how am I supposed to protect him?"

"You protect him because that is your duty."

Arael looked at her.

"And if he refuses our guidance?"

"We continue guiding him."

"And if he keeps refusing?"

"We continue."

"For how long?"

Seraphina's gaze returned to the sleeping human.

"Until our duty ends."

Arael studied her quietly.

There was something about the way she spoke that made him admire her. She didn't simply perform her duty because she had been commanded to do so. She genuinely believed in it.

Perhaps that was why she never became tired of helping their human.

Arael had never told her, but there were times when he envied that quality.

"How do you stay so patient?" he asked.

Seraphina looked at him. "I remember why I'm here."

Arael lowered his gaze.

"Sometimes I forget."

"Then I'll remind you."

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither of them said anything.

There was nothing particularly remarkable about the moment, yet Arael found himself strangely aware of her presence. He had known Seraphina for decades, but recently he had begun noticing little things about her that he had never paid attention to before.

The softness of her voice.

The way she smiled whenever their human succeeded at something.

The way she never hesitated to put herself between danger and someone else.

Even the way her wings moved whenever she became excited about something.

Arael quickly looked away.

He wasn't sure why he had suddenly become so conscious of her.

Before he could think about it any further, their human suddenly sat upright.

"What time is it?"

Arael and Seraphina both looked toward him.

The human grabbed the clock, stared at it for several seconds, and then immediately jumped out of bed.

"Oh, no!"

He began rushing around the room, searching for his clothes.

Arael watched him with a mixture of irritation and relief.

"Finally."

Seraphina covered her mouth as she laughed.

Arael looked at her. "What's funny?"

"Nothing."

"You are laughing at me!"

"I'm laughing because you look relieved."

"I am relieved."

"I know."

The human hurried past them without realizing that two celestial beings were standing only a few feet away.

Arael watched him leave the room before shaking his head.

"16 years," he muttered. "16 years of trying to teach him responsibility, and apparently the only thing capable of waking him is the fear of being late."

Seraphina smiled. "At least he's awake."

"That's a very low standard."

"It is still progress."

Arael looked at her for a moment before smiling despite himself.

"You're impossible."

"So I've been told."

They followed their human outside.

As they moved through the mortal world, their celestial forms remained invisible to ordinary human eyes. They walked among people who had no idea that Angels were watching from only a few steps away, quietly influencing circumstances and protecting lives. There were pair of Angels following each human out there.

Their human hurried down the street, completely unaware of the two Guardians following him.

Arael noticed that he was about to cross the road without looking.

His expression immediately changed.

He moved toward him, but Seraphina gently caught his arm.

"Wait."

Arael looked at her.

Before he could ask why, their human stopped at the edge of the road.

A vehicle rushed past.

The human stepped backward.

Arael exhaled.

Seraphina released his arm.

"See?" she said. "He can make the right choice."

Arael looked at their human, then at her.

"Sometimes."

She smiled.

"Sometimes is enough."

Arael couldn't help smiling.

They continued walking together.

For a while, neither Angel spoke. The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable. In fact, Arael had begun to enjoy these quiet moments more than he realized.

He glanced toward Seraphina.

She was watching their human with the same gentle expression she always wore whenever she looked at him.

Arael wondered what she would be like if she weren't an Angel.

He wondered what she would do if she were allowed to live a life entirely of her own choosing.

The thought surprised him.

Why was he thinking about that?

He looked away.

Seraphina noticed.

"What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing."

She smiled knowingly. "You're terrible at lying."

"I'm not lying."

"You are."

Arael glanced at her. "Fine. I was wondering something."

"What?"

He hesitated.

Then he smiled faintly.

"I was wondering what you'd be like if you weren't a Guardian Angel."

Seraphina looked at him with genuine surprise.

"I've never thought about that."

"Really?"

She shook her head.

"What about you?"

Arael considered the question.

"I don't know."

Seraphina smiled. "Then perhaps we're both exactly where we're supposed to be."

Arael looked at her.

For some reason, those words stayed with him.

Neither of them knew how important that moment would eventually become.

Neither knew that the peaceful days they were enjoying were already numbered.

And neither knew that somewhere beyond Heaven, beyond Earth, and beyond the sight of ordinary Angels, something had begun to take notice of Seraphina.

Something that understood her kindness.

Something that understood her compassion.

Something that would eventually use both against her.

For now, however, Arael knew only one thing.

He had been assigned to protect a troublesome human.

And somewhere along the way, he had begun looking forward to every day he spent beside the Angel assigned to protect him with him.

He simply hadn't realized yet that what he felt for Seraphina was no longer merely companionship.

It was the beginning of love.
