Chapter 1
It all started like a regular day; wake up at 3am, go to your fast food job, and clock out before noon. The work was boring but some money was better than no money at all.
“Mya! I need you to make sure you stock before you leave.“, the manager called out.
“Okay.” I then walked to the back to gather supplies for the restaurant. Cups of all sizes, sauces, lids etc. While loading my cart, my phone suddenly began to ring.
Ring Ring
Normally, I wouldn’t answer my phone during work, but I was about to clock out any, so I figured why not.
“Hello, is this Miss. Mya Delroy?“, a male voice asked.
What is this a bill collector? Maybe a scam?
“Uh, yes this is her. Who is this?” I asked while placing extra bags onto my cart.
“This is Kim Mingyu from Woodcrest and Associates. I am calling on behalf my client the late Delroy Sr. This is regarding the disbursement of his estate and other assets”
Wait. Late like dead? Deceased? Estate and assets?
The sudden new information almost made me drop my phone as I took everything in. Harvey Delroy Sr. is my grandfather, although I’ve never met him. Everything I’ve heard about him is second-hand whispered at family gatherings. Older cousins say he sat on a pile wealth accumulated throughout his life and refused to share. Uncles and Aunts whispered about his strange obsession with surveillance under this guise of protecting his assets.
The thought that someone universally known for being secretive and stingy would have something like a will is beyond me.
“Hello? Miss, are you still there?“. The sound of the man’s voice on the phone brought me out of my thoughts.
“Uh, yes, I’m sorry. I guess I was just a little caught off guard, that’s all.” I mentally face palmed, realizing that I left this man waiting.
“I see that’s understandable. Many people are shocked when this type of unfortunate news reaches them,” Mingyu responded, sounding surprisingly worried despite this probably not being his first time giving out this type of news.
He sounds more upset than I do, but then again, he probably knew my grandfather more than me.
Mingyu then continues, “I would like to invite you to a meeting to discuss your share in Mr. Delroy Sr. estate, as well as the process of transferring your inheritance to your name.It will take place at our company’s east office this upcoming Wednesday.”
“Oh, uh ok. Could you tell me the address please?” I asked as I walked out of the backroom and towards the front. Completely forgetting about the task I was doing prior.
“Of course. I look forward to seeing you again Miss. Delroy.” Mingyu said before he hung up. There was something strange in his voice that I couldn’t quite place.
Wait, did he say ‘again’? What does he mean by that? We’ve never met before.
“OK, ok, calm down Mya. People slip up all the time. It’s not that deep. ” I said to myself as I clocked out from work.
“You just have to go to this meeting and see what this old man left you. It’s probably just some books or maybe a beat up car”.
Besides, your grandfather hasn’t even met you before. Your inheritance couldn’t be that special.
