Chapter one the beginning of vacations
A story by D
The summer started with the smell of rain on hot concrete and the promise of secrets.
Camilla was 16 years old and for the first time in 2 years, she could not stop smiling on the flight to Los Angeles. She was not excited because of the ocean and summer vibes but because of him, her forbidden favorite: David, 18 years old, her cousin and forever secret crush.
David’s house was not just a simple house. It was glass, marble, and silence. A luxury villa that swallowed sounds. Palm trees lined the driveway like guards.
He was there leaning against the gate, arms crossed, eyes darker and more fine and mature, smiling and waiting for Camilla. As he saw Camilla’s taxi arriving, a blushing smile that he could not hide came out from his face and he started the conversation.
«You came» he asked with a smooth and sweet voice. He was talking as if he was not sure she would.
Of course I came, she replied. It was just like her heart wasn’t racing. After that short and embarrassing moment, David took Camilla’s bag and helped her to bring them inside the house.
The family was loud and happy. Joy, hugs, questions and phrases like «you have grown so much» or «wow you have a very nice body shape» etc... But between David and Camilla there was not any exchange, only silence. The type of silence that screams.
The day finally came to an end and at night after dinner, David’s mom smiled and said «you two can share the same room. Like when you were little.»
They continued to behave like strangers who never knew each other but nobody was paying attention to it. They thought that it was just a phase of adulthood, nothing more. But they never knew that what was behind it could all shock them.
Time to sleep and Camilla needed to put on her nightwear. With the door that was a little bit open, as David was passing he could not stop admiring the sweet and nice body of his cousin Camilla. The moment to sleep came, ten inches of space between them. It felt like fire. The ceiling fan turned. Shadows moved on the walls. His shoulder brushed hers when he turned but she didn’t move away. She felt his breathing slow, controlled, like he was pretending to sleep. Her eyes stayed open, fixed on the dark, counting his exhales.

In the morning, light cut through the curtains in gold lines. She woke up first, nine while he was on his side facing her. One arm thrown over the empty space between them.
Their eyes met. No words, just a look that lasted for 3 seconds. The kind of look which cousins are not supposed to give.
David sat up first and ran a hand through his hair.
«BREAKFAST» he muttered and walked out, but before the door closed he looked back.
Just once.
And Camilla knew that something was going on but so many ideas could not stop passing in her mind. A smooth sound made her come back to reality. It was her phone which was showing the notification of a message. It was David.
David: on the veranda now. We need to talk.
Just two sentences that would not allow Camilla’s mind to rest.
«May all my ideas be true or he just wants to tell me something. After all he is my cousin, nothing strange can happen to me» that is what Camilla was thinking. But in her mind she really knew what was going to happen. She had always been dreaming about it.
Camilla finally went to the veranda. When she arrived she saw her fine cousin David already waiting for her. David was wearing a white T-shirt showing all his muscles which could not allow Camilla to stay indifferent.
«Hey, what’s up? Why did you send me that message? We are in the same house, you know» said Camilla with a sarcastic voice.
«We need to talk. I have something that I have been keeping for long in my heart and I think that this is the right moment for you to know» said David.
After what David said, the atmosphere became cold, quiet and a little bit strange. Camilla already knew what her cousin wanted to tell her. She had always been dreaming about that moment ever since she was 10 years old, but she wanted to hear it from David before putting all her heart into something that is fake.
The brief silence finally came to its end. «Camilla, I love you, but not the way that a brother is supposed to love his sister. What I am feeling for you is more than that.»
