HANGING MOUSE

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

The Hanging Mouse A tiny mouse enters a house, harmless and unnoticed. At the same time, a child grows up within those same walls—playing, making mistakes, learning, and slowly becoming an adult. Their lives seem completely unrelated, yet they follow strangely similar paths. As the mouse grows, so does the list of problems it creates. Eventually, a trap is set, baited with something irresistible. The mouse follows the familiar path—and gets caught. Years later, the child faces a trap of his own. But unlike the mouse, he has a choice. Sometimes the trap doesn't look like a trap. Sometimes it looks like food, friendship, love, acceptance, or the life everyone tells you that you should want. The question is: will you follow the familiar path, or will you choose another one?

HANGING MOUSE

The Hanging Mouse

The mouse was tiny.

So tiny that, at first, nobody was bothered by it.

It ran across the floor in quick little steps, disappeared beneath the sofa, came out from behind a cupboard, and occasionally stopped in the middle of the room as if the entire house belonged to it.

The family noticed. But nobody cared enough to do anything."It's just a baby mouse," someone said."What can it possibly do?"And the mouse continued playing.

At the same time, in another part of the same house, a little boy was playing too.He ran through the rooms, knocked over cushions, played with whatever he could find and laughed whenever someone chased him.He was small.Harmless.Just a child.

His parents sometimes scolded him."Don't draw on the walls!"The boy looked at the colourful marks he had made. Then at his parents. And smiled."Sorry."A few minutes later, he was doing something else. The mouse was doing the same.It found a small piece of food.It carried it away.Nobody noticed. The boy found a biscuit on the kitchen table. He took it without asking. His mother noticed."Didn't I tell you not to take things without asking?"The boy lowered his head."Sorry."She sighed."Just don't do it again."The mouse didn't understand what it was doing was wrong. The boy didn't either.

They were simply learning.

Growing.

Exploring.

Time passed.

The mouse grew.

The tiny creature that once disappeared beneath the sofa was now large enough to be noticed wherever it went.It began tearing packets.

Knocking things over.

Stealing food.

Running through rooms whenever someone entered.People started complaining."Someone needs to catch that mouse.""It's becoming a problem.""I saw it in the kitchen yesterday.""We need to do something."The same creature that everyone had once ignored had now become something everyone wanted gone.

Across the house, the boy was growing too.

School became college.

College became ambition.

His notebooks slowly turned into certificates.

His childhood drawings became memories.

He worked hard.

He studied.

He succeeded.

People began noticing him.But success has a strange habit. It attracts attention. Some people admired him. Some genuinely supported him.And some watched quietly.Waiting.Waiting for him to fail."You think you're better than everyone now?""Don't get too confident.""Let's see how far you actually go."The boy heard them.Sometimes he ignored them.Sometimes he smiled.Sometimes their words stayed with him longer than he wanted. The mouse was no longer ignored either.

People were watching its movements. They knew where it went. They knew where it searched for food. They knew its favourite routes. And eventually, they prepared a trap.A small wooden trap was placed near the corner of the house.Inside it was a simple bait.A piece of tomato. The mouse smelled it.

Stopped.

Looked around.

Then slowly moved towards it.One step.

Another.

Another.

It entered.

Click.

The trap closed. The mouse struggled. Its movements became frantic. But it was too late. Its tail caught against the mechanism, and its tiny body was left hanging.

The house became silent.

The mouse had followed the familiar path. And the familiar path had led it into a trap.Somewhere else, the boy was standing at a crossroads of his own.He had everything he had once wanted.

Success.

Recognition.

A future.

But then someone entered his life.Someone who seemed comforting.Someone who understood his loneliness.Someone who made him feel accepted. He knew there were things about that person that didn't feel right. He had heard the warnings. He had noticed the similarities between this person and the people who had always tried to pull him down.

But loneliness has a strange way of making the wrong door look like the right one.

So he stayed.

One decision became another.

One compromise became another.

Slowly, his life began changing.

His work suffered.

His relationships suffered.

His peace disappeared.

He was constantly trying to balance everything.

Career.

Family.

Friends.

Love.

Expectations.

And himself.

He couldn't leave. But he couldn't stay peacefully either. He was stuck somewhere in between.

Hanging.

Just like the mouse.

But what if the mouse had stopped?

What if it had smelled the bait and walked away?

What if, instead of following the familiar path, it had turned towards another corner?

Another direction?

Another possibility?

The trap would still be there. But the mouse wouldn't.

And somewhere in another version of the boy's life, he stopped too.

He looked at the person beside him.He looked at the life he was building. And instead of choosing what everyone expected him to choose, he asked himself one question:"What do I actually want?"

He changed direction.

Not because the other path was easy. But because it was his.

He explored.

He met new people.

He learned from different experiences.

He made mistakes.

He changed his plans.

He chose his career without letting society choose it for him.

He built relationships that gave him peace instead of making him smaller.

And most importantly—he never stopped exploring.

His life wasn't perfect. But it was his.

He wasn't hanging between everything anymore.

He was moving.

Forward.

The mouse remained trapped.

The boy did not.

Two lives.

Two paths.

Two choices.

One trap.

And perhaps the difference was never the trap itself.

Perhaps it was the decision to follow the path leading towards it.

Because the trap doesn't necessarily look like a trap.

Sometimes it looks like food.

Sometimes it looks like friendship.

Sometimes it looks like love.

Sometimes it looks like acceptance.

And sometimes it looks like the life everyone tells you that you should want.

The choice is yours.
