Prologue
“Some people walk into your life quietly.
Others crash into it like a storm.
Adrian Cross did both.”
The first time I met Adrian Cross...
He ruined my interview.
Not intentionally.
At least, I don’t think he did.
I had spent weeks preparing for that scholarship interview.
Every answer.
Every detail.
Every possible question.
I wasn’t nervous.
I couldn’t afford to be.
This scholarship meant everything.
Without it...
There would be no university.
No future.
No second chance.
I stood outside the interview room, rehearsing my introduction one last time when someone bumped into my shoulder.
Coffee splashed across my white blouse.
The folder slipped from my hands.
Pages scattered across the polished floor.
For one heartbeat...
Everything was silent.
Then a calm voice said,
“...Well.”
“That could’ve gone better.”
I looked up.
He was tall.
Dark hair slightly messy, as though he’d run his hand through it one too many times.
His sleeves were rolled to his forearms.
His tie hung loose around his neck.
He looked nothing like someone attending an interview.
He looked...
Annoyingly composed.
“I’m so sorry.”
He crouched immediately, gathering the papers before I could.
I snatched them from his hands.
“I’ve got it.”
“You don’t.”
He pointed toward the floor.
“You’re missing page four.”
I looked.
He was right.
I hated that he was right.
By the time I stepped into the interview room...
There was a coffee stain across my blouse.
My notes were out of order.
And my confidence had disappeared somewhere between the hallway and the door.
I didn’t get the scholarship.
For weeks...
I blamed Adrian Cross.
Maybe it wasn’t fair.
Maybe I would’ve failed anyway.
But resentment is easier than disappointment.
Especially when you have someone to blame.
Six months later...
On the first day of university...
The dean walked into our classroom.
“I’ll be assigning semester partners.”
My stomach sank.
Please...
Anyone but—
“Vivienne Arden.”
The dean looked down at his list.
“You’ll be working with...”
He paused.
“Adrian Cross.”
The room erupted into whispers.
I slowly lifted my head.
Across the classroom...
He looked just as surprised as I felt.
For a long moment...
Neither of us spoke.
Then...
He gave me the smallest nod.
As though we were simply two strangers meeting for the first time.
I hated him a little more for that.
Because he didn’t remember me.
I remembered everything.
What I didn’t know then...
Was that Adrian Cross would eventually become the one person who knew me better than I knew myself.
And that the silence growing between us...
Would one day become the safest place either of us had ever known.
