The Two-Years Clause

The mahogany boardroom table of Sterling Holdings so intensely polished that Arthur Sterling could see his own stern, unyielding reflection staring back at him like a ghost. At twenty-eight, he was the youngest billionaire to ever control the city's ruthless corporate skyline, a man who viewed life, love, and empire through a lens of strict profit, loss, and absolute, uncompromised control.

Right now, however, someone was attempting a hostile takeover of his personal life—and ironically, it was his own flesh and blood.

"You expect me to sign a binding marriage contract as if I am acquiring a commercial real estate property?" Arthur's voice cut through the heavy, suffocating silence of the room, sharp as broken glass. He didn't bother looking up from the dense legal paperwork spread across the dark wood before him, his jaw tightly clenched.

At the head of the table sat his grandfather, old Cornelius Sterling, leaning heavily on his gold-handled cane. The old man’s eyes weren't clouded by age or frailty; they gleamed with the sharp, calculated cunning of a predator who had built an entire empire from the dirt up.

"It is not a hostile takeover, Arthur. It's a strategic merger," Cornelius replied, his voice raspy, deliberate, and entirely unruffled. "The board requires absolute stability. The public and our foreign investors want to see a traditional family man at the helm before we launch the multi-million-dollar international expansion next quarter. You need a wife, and the Lawrence family happens to have a daughter who fits our exact corporate and social requirements."

Arthur let out a cold, humorless chuckle, abruptly slamming his heavy gold pen onto the desk. The metallic clatter echoed sharply off the glass walls.

"A corporate requirement. Exactly. Let's not romanticize this transaction with words like wife or family," Arthur snapped, leaning forward and resting his palms flat on the table, glaring directly at the old man. "I will marry her to satisfy the board's archaic demands and silence the shareholders, yes. But let one thing be crystal clear between us: this arrangement has a strict expiration date."

He tapped a finger sharply against the bolded clause on page four, his eyes flashing with irritation.

"Two years," Arthur declared, his tone leaving zero room for argument or negotiation. "In exactly twenty-four months, when the expansion is secured, our international stocks stabilize, and the press loses interest, we file for divorce. Clean, quiet, and complete. She takes her financial settlement, walks away with her dignity intact, and we go our separate ways with nothing more to do with each other."

Cornelius blinked slowly, his wrinkled face remaining entirely mask-like as his grandson laid down the law.

"Two years. A divorce. Nothing more to do with each other," Cornelius repeated, the words rolling off his tongue as if he were tasting a bitter medicine he had no intention of swallowing. He leaned forward, resting both hands heavily on his cane. "If that is truly all your cold heart desires, Arthur, then so be it. The contract stands as written."

Arthur narrowed his eyes, deeply suspicious of how easily the old man had caved. Usually, Cornelius fought tooth and nail for every single inch of family tradition. But Arthur didn't care about the concession; victory was victory. He snatched up his gold pen, scrawled his signature across the bottom line with aggressive finality, and shoved the leather folder away from him.

"Good. Then we understand each other. Meeting adjourned."

With a sharp snap of his briefcase, Arthur turned on his heel and strode out of the boardroom, his tailored suit jacket flaring behind him as the heavy mahogany doors closed shut with a muffled thud.

Inside the quiet room, left entirely alone except for the ghost of his grandson's lingering arrogance, old Cornelius slowly straightened up. The frail, weary posture vanished instantly. A wide, knowing, almost mischievous grin spread across his weathered face, deeply crinkling the corners of his sharp eyes.

Slowly, deliberately, the old man reached up and began to rub his white beard, a low, rumbling chuckle vibrating deep in his chest.

Which divorce? Cornelius thought inwardly, shaking his head with quiet, absolute amusement. Just wait until you actually meet your wife, boy. You'll be thanking me on your knees, and before this two-year contract is up, I might just have a big, healthy grandson running the halls of this estate.

He let out another soft, raspy laugh, entirely unbothered by Arthur's icy threats. Blood may have run cold in that boy's veins, but the Sterling stubbornness was matched only by the family's knack for falling hard when the right woman finally walked through the door.

Miles away from the sterile, high-rise luxury of Sterling Holdings, Clara Lawrence stood motionless by the floor-to-ceiling window of her apartment, watching the city lights blur and bleed beneath a steady, relentless sheet of evening rain.

She held a cup of cold, untouched tea between her trembling hands, her expression a fragile mix of quiet defiance and utter exhaustion. Clara knew what the gossip columns and high-society circles said about her: the privileged heiress who had everything handed to her on a silver platter, never having to work a day in her life. But nobody knew the suffocating reality behind closed doors—the crushing debt her family had inherited, the vultures circling their assets, or the way her own future had just been traded away like a disposable chip on a poker table simply to save a collapsing corporate empire.

Her father had made the terms painfully clear during their last argument: her signature on that cold marriage license was the absolute only thing standing between total financial ruin and their family's total destruction. A two-year prison sentence disguised as a wedding. Two years locked in a legal contract with a man she had never even met—a notorious titan known in the business columns as a cold-blooded pragmatist who cared for nothing except balance sheets, profit margins, and bottom lines.

Two years, and then I'm free, Clara told herself, whispering the words like a protective mantra against the rising tide of panic in her chest. Just a business transaction. Nothing more.

She didn't know the first thing about Arthur Sterling. She didn't know his voice, his temperament, or the fierce, unyielding way he commanded a room.

And as she stared down at the rainy, unforgiving street below, completely unaware of the scheming grandfather plotting her domestic fate across town, Clara had no idea that the man she was marrying was already planning her exit—while destiny was quietly preparing to completely wreck both of their plans.
