Chapter 1

-Come Back Confession

Adriana came back from her hostel after two years. She was happy that she would finally get to spend some time with her family again. But Jake and Mateo were also part of that family.

The reason she had gone to the hostel was to move on from Jake, but that never happened. Perhaps she never really wanted to remove Jake from her heart. Perhaps she had always loved him.

Adriana

My story will not end so soon. I met a lot of people in my life and made a lot of friends.

I stand at the hostel gate—suitcase in hand, the sun low behind me. The campus buzzes faintly behind me—goodbyes echoing from dorm windows, laughter fading into memory.

My phone buzzes. A text from my friends:

“Have a safe trip. Miss you already.”

I smile—a little sad, a little proud—and tuck the phone away.

It’s been two years.

I’m taller now.

Stronger.

Not just running from something anymore...

But returning—on my own terms.

And there... parked just beyond the sidewalk?

Is their car.

Mateo is leaning against it with his arms crossed, wearing that same quiet smile.

The Stepbrothers 2

Jake? He’s sitting in the passenger seat—but as soon as he sees me... he straightens up. His eyes lock on mine through the glass.

The door opens.

Jake steps out—slowly at first... then faster.

Mateo doesn’t stop him this time.

And neither do I.

Because today?

No one looks away.

Welcome home.

Jake hugs me so hard that my feet almost leave the ground. His arms are strong—not letting go.

Jake (whispering): “I missed you.”

He pulls back, holding my shoulders at arm’s length—staring at my face like he can’t quite believe I’m real.

I smile, blinking away tears.

Just like that, the years seem to fall away.

Mateo walks over, joining us. His smile is softer... but just as glad.

Adriana

And at this moment, I realize that I will never be able to forget Jake. There will always be a place for Jake in my heart. No matter how much I tell myself that I don’t want him... I do.

Jake’s hands are still on my shoulders—the touch grounding, familiar. Like two pieces of a puzzle that fit together.

Mateo (quietly): “You hungry? I hear Mom’s making her homemade lasagna tonight.”

I nod, not trusting my words. The weight of everything I didn’t say hangs between us—not in a bad way.

This isn’t real.

This is something different. A future that’s messy. Complicated. But...

Jake (softly): “Come on. Let’s go home.”

And home it is... with all its imperfections.

I said: “Yeah. Let’s go.”

Jake takes my suitcase from me—as if it weighs nothing.

Jake (gesturing toward the car): “Ladies first.”

Mateo glares at him playfully.

Mateo (dryly): “Real gentleman you are.”

Jake just grins.

A light breeze whispers through the evening air—cool and sweet. I look up at the sky, the first stars now appearing, and feel the weight from before lift.

I smile.

The three of us start toward the car—together.

We all slide into the car, the windows open to let in the evening air. The engine hums quietly.

Jake (bouncing his knee): “You’ll never guess what happened last week. I’ve been dating this girl...”

Mateo (raising an eyebrow): “Oh, really?”

Jake (smirking): “Yeah. She’s awesome. Pretty and smart...”

Mateo (dryly): “Uh-huh.”

Jake (still smirking): “She’s got an amazing sense of humor, too... and she laughs at my jokes.”

Mateo: “Great.”

I listen quietly.

The Stepbrothers 2

I stay quiet—hands folded in my lap, eyes fixed on the road.

Writer

Jake glances back at her through the rearview mirror. Just for a second.

But says nothing.

He just keeps talking—louder now, like he’s trying to fill the silence with noise.

Jake: “Anyway, her name’s Mia. She’s in law school. Super serious, but she smiles when I make her laugh.”

Mateo watches Jake—and then her.

He sees it.

Sees how her breath hitches slightly.

How her fingers curl into her sleeves.

And how she doesn’t smile.

Not even once.

Silence again—like earlier. But this one feels heavier. More real.

Jake (breaking the quiet): “She’s great.”

Mateo (nodding): “Yeah? Sounds like it.”

Jake (almost too casually): “We’ve been hanging out a lot lately... I guess you could say it’s getting serious.”

Mateo (nodding again): “That’s good. Good for you, man.”

Jake (still forcing cheer into his voice): “Yeah, it is. I really like her.”

Adriana

I say nothing. Just stare out the window—the world blurring past like my thoughts.

The car hums on, carrying silence heavier than words.

Writer

Jake sneaks another glance at her through the mirror.

This time, longer.

And this time... he sees it.

The way her jaw is tight.

The way her fingers tremble—just slightly—on her lap.

How she doesn’t blink for too long, as if holding back something deep behind her eyes.

He looks away fast—like he got caught.

Mateo watches both of them now... saying nothing.

Because sometimes?

Love isn’t loud.

It’s in what goes unsaid.

Adriana

I said: “Stop the car near the store over there. I need to buy something.”

Jake slows the car, pulling over to the side of the street outside a convenience store.

The car goes quiet once more—just the idling of the engine and the sound of cars passing by.

Mateo (breaking the silence): “We can wait here. You won’t take long, right?”

I said: “Yeah.”

I start unbuckling my seatbelt and go into the store.

The store bell jingles as I step inside—cool air washing over my skin. Fluorescent lights hum above, rows of snacks and drinks stretching ahead.

The Stepbrothers 2

I walk slowly down an aisle—my hands clenched into fists at my sides. My breath unsteady now that I’m away from them.

I don’t really need anything.

I just needed to breathe.

To be alone for one moment—to stop pretending everything is okay.

Because he’s dating someone.

And it should make me happy.

It should hurt less.

But it doesn’t feel like moving on...

It feels like being replaced.

I never used to do drugs, but I started using them to deal with stress. I started smoking in the store bathroom and taking stress pills.

I lean against the wall by the sink—the air thick with the smell of disinfectant. The fluorescent light buzzes faintly above, making my eyes ache.

I close my eyes, counting my breaths.

One...

Two...

Three...

Four...

The pills make it easier—numbing everything with their bitter taste. Or at least, they’re supposed to. But tonight? They’ve hardly taken the edge off.

My eyes blur—the world shifting slightly, then coming back into focus. I reach up and touch my face.

It’s damp.

When did I start crying? I don’t remember.

I blink a few times, trying to clear my vision.

But it doesn’t help.

The tears keep coming.

Slowly, steadily...

Until I’m crying—really crying—in a bathroom stall in a random convenience store.

It all feels overwhelming.

Suddenly, I hate the lights.

Hate how white everything is.

I close my eyes.

I slide down to the floor, knees against my chest. The coldness of the tiles seeps through my clothes, making me shiver.

But I can’t stop crying now—deep, silent sobs that shake my whole body.

My phone buzzes in my pocket. I ignore it.

This isn’t the time for calls or texts. It’s the time for being honest with someone who can’t hear me.

And the honesty is this: it hurts.

I rinse the tears from my face, staring at my reflection in the mirror. My eyes look red, my cheeks flushed... but I’m more in control now.

I swallow hard—the bitter taste of the pills lingering on my tongue. For a moment, I don’t want to go back out.

But I can’t stay locked in a bathroom forever.

I take a deep breath...

And I leave.

The night air feels cool against my skin as I walk back out. The light from the store’s neon sign pools in the shadows around it, washing everything in a warm glow.

The Stepbrothers 2

Jake and Mateo are still in the car—waiting.

They don’t seem to notice how long I’ve been gone—or the change in my eyes.

Jake (nodding at the bag in my hand): “Get what you needed?”

I said: “Yeah.”

I get into the car.

I slide back into the car, closing the door softly behind me. The plastic bag rests on my lap—empty, really. Just something to hold.

Jake (glancing at me): “Everything okay?”

I nod—too quickly.

I said: “Yeah. Just... needed some air.”

Mateo looks over quietly—his eyes searching my face like he’s not quite buying it.

But he doesn’t push.

He never does.

Silence again—uncomfortable this time.

I stare out the window, watching the houses pass in a blur of yellow and white. Everything feels too close. Too real.

Jake doesn’t say anything else, and neither does Mateo. But I can feel their gazes shifting toward me—like they’re worried.

I keep staring out the window—the streetlights casting patterns across my reflection.

Jake (quietly): “Almost there, right?”

Mateo nods, his eyes still fixed on me.

The Stepbrothers 2

No one talks for a while—the only sound is the hum of the engine and the wind outside.

I keep my eyes fixed on the window, even when the car slows and turns down a familiar street.

The familiar houses are all lit up. Lawns and flowers line the streets. A couple of people walk their dogs, while a few kids play on skateboards.

The car pulls into the driveway—the engine cutting off.

For a moment, it’s just Jake, Mateo, and me, alone together.

Mateo: “We’re here.”

I get out of the car and walk to the house. I knock.

A few seconds pass... and then my mom opens the door. A smile lights up her face when she sees me.

Mom (stepping aside): “There you are! I was starting to worry.”

I nod, offering a small smile in return.

Mom (noticing something in my eyes): “Are you okay, honey?”

I (nodding too quickly): “Yeah. Just tired. It was a long drive.”

She doesn’t press—just steps closer and hugs me instead.

Mom (smiling softly): “We’re glad you’re here.”

I hug Mom.

I hold onto my mom tightly—her familiar scent, her warmth, the way she pats my back like I’m still a little kid.

For a moment, I let myself feel safe. Like nothing bad could ever reach me here.

Mom (softly): “I missed you so much... Look at you—so grown up.”

I smile into her shoulder, but it wavers.

Because no matter how hard I try...

She’s not the one my heart is truly searching for.

Mom pulls back, hands still on my shoulders—her eyes flicking between me and Mateo, who has just stepped inside behind me.

The Stepbrothers 2

Something shifts in her gaze. A quiet recognition. Like she sees it now—the same easy way Dad used to look at her when they first started... the small silences, the way Mateo’s eyes follow her without meaning to.

She doesn’t say it. Doesn’t even smile too widely.

Just a soft breath.

A knowing.

And then—

Mom (to Mateo): “Come in, sweetheart. You too—it’s cold out.”

Mateo nods, stepping past with that quiet kindness of his—still watching her from the corner of his eye.

And Mom?

She turns away before anyone can see.

But she knows.

Because some loves...

look just like home.

Then she, Mateo, and Jake go inside the house.

The warmth of the house wraps around her—familiar, comforting. Photos line the hallway: old ones of her as a kid, new ones with Eric and her stepbrothers during holidays.

Jake kicks off his shoes with a grin, tossing his jacket onto the couch.

Jake: “Smells like Mom’s lasagna is almost done. I’m starving.”

Mateo (quietly): “You ate half a pizza before we left.”

Jake (shrugging): “That was for warm-up.”

Adriana

They bicker like always—but it’s different now.

I watch them move through the living room... two halves of the same world I’ve been missing.

And then—

Mateo meets my eyes across the room.

The Stepbrothers 2

Just for a second.

But it lingers.

Like he wants to ask if I’m really okay.

Then—

Mom: “Mateo, come to my room before dinner. I need to talk to you.”

Mateo looks at her, his expression a little confused, but he says:

Mateo: “Okay, Mom.”

A little while later, Mateo knocks softly on Mom’s door.

Mom doesn’t look up, as if she already knows who it is, and says:

Mom: “Come in, Mateo.”

Mateo comes in, closes the door quietly, and stands in the room as if the teacher has called him into the office.

After taking her medicine, Mom sits on her bed and says:

Mom: “Come, sit here with me.”

Mateo walks over slowly and sits next to her. He looks at her and says:

Mateo: “You called me. What’s the matter, Mom? Is everything okay?”

Mom: “Yeah. Everything is okay, but you’re not okay.”

Mateo looks at her, confused.

Mateo: “What do you mean, Mom?”

Mom: “What’s going on between you and Adriana?”

Mateo’s expression changes as if someone has touched a sore spot at the mention of Adriana’s name.

Mateo (trying to play it off): “What are you saying? What could happen between me and Adriana? Nothing will happen, Mom.”

Mom looks at Mateo as if she doesn’t believe anything he has said.

Mom: “I am your mother. I may not be your biological mother, but I am your mother—and Adriana’s too. So tell me what happened.”

Mateo just stares at her, as if someone has seen him for the first time and asked what was wrong.

And finally, he says what he has been keeping hidden in his heart.

The Stepbrothers 2

Mateo: “I don’t know what’s going to happen to me. Why am I even thinking like this? Whenever I try to sleep at night, Adriana... comes to me as soon as I close my eyes. And whenever I try to move away from her, she comes in front of me and I melt, as if someone is holding my chest. I know... I shouldn’t. I don’t have the right. It’s wrong. But whenever I try, she’s everywhere—in front of me, near me, in my mind. Wherever I go, she’s there.”

Mom: “Mateo—”

Mateo: “Mom, no—let me speak.”

Mateo: “Even when I’m far away from her, she’s always there. It’s as if I can smell her, as if she’s in the air everywhere. I can’t see her like this. I can’t see her crying for someone else. It feels as if someone has taken away something... I love.”

Mateo: “I know she may not love me. She’s never looked at me that way. But I have never felt this strongly for anyone. Never.”

Mateo: “It feels as if someone has tied a rope around my entire body. When I look at her, sometimes she looks at Jake with the same eyes I want her to look at me with. But she won’t.”

Mateo: “I have seen how she looks at Jake—as if she sees only him, as if Jake is her whole world. And here I am, just watching... as if my whole world ended before it even started with her.”

Mateo: “My chest feels like someone has stabbed me a thousand times when I can’t tell her what she means to me or how much I love her.”

Mateo: “I know, Mom, when Jake and I went to pick her up from the hostel, I saw how she was looking at Jake and how Jake was looking at her. How they were hugging each other. It felt as if they were made for each other. It felt as if they couldn’t stay away from each other, as if there was a connection and power between them.”

Mateo: “If they’re both made for each other, then why did God give me such feelings? Why did God make me feel that I love Adriana?”

Mateo: “You used to tell me that when love is one-sided, that love is never complete. Mom, will my love also never be complete?”

Mateo: “Mom, I love her a lot. Will it never be complete?”

His voice breaks.

Mateo: “Everything will end. Everything...”

Mom stands abruptly, walks around the desk, and pulls Mateo into her arms before he can say more. His shoulders shake against her, his breath ragged.

The Stepbrothers 2

Mom (softly): “Oh, sweetheart...”

She holds him like he’s still her little boy, even if not by blood.

Mom (stroking his hair): “Listen to me. You have every right to love. Every right. Just because she doesn’t feel the same doesn’t make your love incomplete.”

Mateo grips her arms, clinging like he’s afraid he’ll crumble if he lets go.

Mom (whispering): “You think Jake and Adriana are meant for each other? Maybe. But that doesn’t erase how real your love is.”

She pulls back slightly, cupping his tear-streaked face.

Mom: “Your love is yours. And it’s beautiful—even if it hurts right now.”

Mateo swallows hard, eyes red, lashes wet.

Mateo (hoarse): “But... what do I do?”

Mom sighs deeply.

Mom: “You let yourself feel it. Every bit. And then... you learn to carry it. Because love isn’t about possession, Mateo. It’s about letting the person you love be happy, even if their happiness isn’t with you.”

Mateo nods slowly, broken. But something in his eyes clears—just a little.

Mom (softly): “And someday... you’ll find someone who looks at you the way you look at Adriana.”

Mateo exhales like he’s been holding his breath for years.

Mateo: “Someday.”

Not today. Maybe not for a long time.

But someday.

Mom kisses his forehead—gentle, firm.

Mom: “Now go wash your face. Dinner’s soon.”

Mateo nods, standing on unsteady legs.

And as he walks out... Mom watches him go, her own eyes damp.

The Stepbrothers 2

Because some lessons hurt to teach.

And some loves hurt to witness.

But that doesn’t make them any less true.

Adriana

Clattering silverware mingles with quiet laughter. Voices in the background—Dad making some joke, Jake adding a smart-ass comment.

I stare down at my plate, not really listening.

The dining room is warm, filled with the smell of lasagna and garlic bread. Everyone is talking—my mom laughing at something Jake said, my stepdad grinning as he pours drinks—but I’m not really there.

My fingers toy with my fork, pushing food around my plate.

And Mateo? He hasn’t looked at me once since he came back from Mom’s room.

His eyes stay fixed on his plate, like it’s the most interesting thing in the world.

Jake leans over, knocking his shoulder against mine.

Jake (grinning): “Hey. You alive?”

I force a smile, nodding—but my eyes flick toward Mateo.

Who still doesn’t look up.

Writer

Mom notices.

She always does.

Her gaze lingers—first on Adriana, then Mateo—before she turns back to the conversation.

Like she’s giving both of them space.

Adriana

But dinner goes on—plates clinking, voices rising and falling—and all I can think is...

“How did everything get so complicated?”

The Stepbrothers 2

Everyone starts clearing the table, conversation still bubbling around me. I excuse myself early, making my way upstairs.

My room is quiet—just the faint hum of distant voices, the soft sound of wind outside. I close the door behind me, leaning against it for a moment.

Alone. Finally.

I exhale slowly, deeply, trying to ignore the weight in my chest.

Except... someone knocks.

The knock is firm, confident—just like Jake always is. I know it’s him before I even call out.

I said: “Come in.”

The door opens—and there he is, leaning against the frame like he owns the place. His usual smirk is softer now—almost hesitant.

Jake (quietly): “You okay?”

I nod, but my fingers twist in the fabric of my sweater.

Jake (stepping inside): “You’ve been quiet.”

He doesn’t push. Just waits—like he always has—for me to say something real.

And for the first time in years... I want to.

I said: “No, I’m okay. Just tired... sir.”

Jake nods like he believes me.

He doesn’t.

He drops onto the edge of my bed—elbows on his knees, fingers laced together.

Jake (smirking): “Tired? Or avoiding someone?”

There’s no judgment in his voice. Just quiet understanding—like he already knows the answer.

I sit beside him, our shoulders barely touching.

I: “...Both, I guess.”

Jake exhales—a half laugh, half sigh.

Jake: “Yeah. Me too.”
